The biggest and loudest lesson about the New York City congestion pricing battle and legal attacks against ESG finance shifts, in general, is that advocacy for it has been out-organized. Precarious progress quickly buckles under attacks from the high-carbon cartels and neoliberal Democrats. This is the general issue with the progressive environmental side here in the hyper-individualistic neoliberal captured US. We will continue to be out-organized until we shift to broader networked organizing of organizers and groups of groups across all levels of governance.

One big idea: Let's pledge as #sustainability and #climate practitioners to equally invest in #emissionreduction and #offset / #removal efforts (at least, if not more in reductions). Why it matters: There are nine technologies that need to scale in order for us to reach Net Zero, carbon removal is only one of them but is getting all the attention (and likely funding). Four other technologies are mature, commercially scalable, and have proven business models - EVs, renewable power, storage, and grids. This could be the solution to ensuring we don't stumble into the next "#carbonneutral" dumpster fire.

My thanks to Sightline Institute for inviting me to do a deep-dive Q&A on why aging solutions are also climate solutions. I've long respected Sightline's thought leadership on all things #planning, #climateadaptation and #resilience, and #equity, and appreciate their focus on this critical topic too. We can't adequately plan for our climate future without considering the ways in which it will (and already is) differently impact a growing segment of our society: older adults. Doing so calls for new approaches to housing, transportation, utilities and more. What's the real weight of workplace resources? I shared this graphic earlier today while presenting with Citi, IFMA and Rheaply on circular facilities and how the reuse of furniture, fixtures and equipment (FF&E) can bolster decarbonization efforts. FF&E is heavy and bulky, and diverting all that physical weight from landfill is super important. But maybe more important, don't forget that when we waste products, we're also wasting 2x to 100x the weight of that product in embodied carbon as well. Keeping goods in use for longer and longer isn't just a smart business practice - it's a heavy-weight carbon reduction strategy too!

Happening Now!!!! The very exciting Circularity, its the event of the year in everyone's favorite city, Chicago. This a global conversation on how we change our ecosystems to eliminate waste. Clever is very please to contribute to this cause by demonstrating how fruit waste, particularly the critical component of farm loss, can be bioprocessed (fermented) into a valuable nutraceutical. In many jurisdiction often 25% of the best superfood in the world, never leaves the farm. The answer that unlocks this challenge is something we call the More Than Context. We need to stop thinking its ok to gather a waste product and develop a method to create new products that create a less than product. It won't find its way to the shelf and won't be sustainable. We need to create More Than products. When it comes to plants, bioprocessing is a viable option, including the style of fermentation that Clever Fruit pioneers. We bioprocess superfruit with the aim to create products 3-5 times more beneficial than the original fruit. That degree of added benefit will find a market, be sustainable and contribute to circularity. There are many ways to process waste and add value. Let's Go!

I’m pleased to share Carbon Accountable's new “SB 253: A Regulations Roadmap”.  I wrote this brief with Michael Schmitz to show that the timely development of a robust set of implementing regulations for the California Climate Corporate Accountability Act #SB53 (Sen Scott Wiener) is eminently doable. The document presents exemplar regulations that clearly demonstrate the feasibility of adhering to the law’s requirement for first reporting by companies in 2026 and challenges the rationale for the proposed two year delay by the Governor's Office Office for this critical climate law. There’s been tremendous support and excitement worldwide for California as it joins the growing network of jurisdictions enacting mandatory corporate GHG emissions disclosure requirements including the EU with its new Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (#CSRD) and countries across the globe that are adopting the #ISSB standards. Can a profit-driven organization also be sustainable? That’s the question posed by this article in the MIT Sloan Management Review & Report. The answer? A resounding “yes.” But to do so, the authors write, leaders must build a business case for sustainability. The new draft from B Lab has a rather interesting Climate Impact topic. In this there are non-optional questions relating to Scope 1, Scope 2 and of course Scope 3. I know a number of B Corps that are doing great things but are going to struggle with this. If that's you, I've got a smidgen of good news for you. I can't stop thinking about the climate impact of our built environment. I started my fascination journey around materials that impact our climate where most people star: plastics. It's everywhere and in everything. But a material that's even more places and in even more things? Cement. It makes up our buildings, roads, bridges, walls, floors. And to make it, there's A LOT of CO2 emitted. So when I learned about Boston-based Sublime Systems I knew I needed to talk to their Head of Communications to learn about how she was telling their story -- both about the science of what they've created, a true-zero cement, but also about how to introduce this process (and ultimate product) to an industry so accustomed to the traditional, CO2 emitting process and product.
