The (ab)use of AI and machine translation is getting really scary. From governments to local businesses, everyone seems to be clicking on that magical button and that's it. Publish. Not even translation and editing agencies are reading their "content". Are we, users and readers, actually reading content? It feels like we're just consuming anything that comes across; which would justify the lack of care in content creation, by the way. One thing's for sure. In a sense, it's working. I spend a lot more time reading stuff trying to understand what on earth they mean... Yes, you know that's an essential metric. But it can't be just me. Are you enjoying today's digital content?

10 hard truths about translation agencies who sell marketing translation 👀 Part 2 Continuing on the first part I published yesterday (see here: https://lnkd.in/eARJVpjV) 🐎 *Disclaimer: this isn't meant to be a translators-vs-agencies type post (I represent a translation agency and was a freelance translator for over a decade). It does however shine a light on debatable practices employed by translation agencies. This topic is likely triggering for many in the translation community – please be respectful in the comments. 😬 *** 6. Many translation agencies will get their top marketing translators to provide translation samples for new clients during an RFP or tender phase, only to ditch and replace them for someone cheaper as soon as the deal has been closed. 🥲 This is often why your marketing translation quality goes down over time, instead of going up – as it should. 7. Preventing linguists from talking to one another or with the client, not providing enough background and context on the campaign or brand… The way most translation agencies manage marketing translation and transcreation is obsolete and inadequate. Having everyone work in virtual cubicles and silos can only have a negative impact on the final output. 8. Brands may make the wrong (but understandable) assumption that the bigger the agency, the better the quality. However, many big agencies hire other translation agencies who hire other translation agencies who hire other translation agencies to do your marketing translations. This Chinese whisper game is often one of the reasons your marketing translations suck and it's almost impossible to see improvements in spite of feedback. 9. Many translation agencies focus on being a LangOps or tech partner... with an interesting strategy: they'll charge you very little for marketing translation (per word), but then put fees upon fees on top for their proprietary (often crappy) technology. This also makes it very hard for you to leave and move to a different provider, so you're stuck even when the agency isn’t delivering on their marketing translation quality promise (see point 6). 10. Sadly, an ISO-certified agency selling marketing translations doesn’t guarantee you’re going to get quality. (The same is true for other certifications, which are often – but not always, of course – used as a marketing strategy). 11. Bonus point: many if not most translation agencies selling SEO marketing translation have no idea what they’re doing. This is the question many AI baby translators seek to answer, claiming to have the ability to decode baby cries into meanings like “boredom,” “pain,” or “hungry.” But anywhere there’s AI, there’s the risk of snake oil. And baby cry translation claims have some critics with lots of experience. Readers should proceed with caution.) People often ask me how I became an award-winning author. (Literally no one has ever asked that.) It required extensive study of Bible commentary and analyzing scripture in the original Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic. (But mostly by receiving daily devotional emails from much smarter authors.) This process has revealed to me hidden messages in the Bible. (Only “hidden” in the sense these verses are not typically on Christian wall art. It’s right there in black and white… and sometimes red.) This insight is rare, it’s life-changing, and I am pleased to share it with you here. (While the first two claims are suspect, what the author wrote is, in fact, found here.) I call this series, “Hidden Secrets of the Bible at Work.” Here’s an example: In the gospel of John, Jesus’ expansive ministry has angered the Jewish leaders, to the point where they want to kill him. Yet Jesus remains in the area to follow God’s perfect timing for his ministry. His followers encourage him to go to Jerusalem for a bigger stage where more people can hear his message. And they encourage it with more than a hint of cynicism. “Jesus’ brothers said to him, ‘Leave Galilee and go to Judea, so that your disciples there may see the works you do. No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world.’ For even his own brothers did not believe in him.” (John 7:3-5 NIV) This reminds me of work. Have you had a plan or project derailed by others? Have so many cooks stirred the pot that you lost control of your soup? Input and collaboration produce strong outcomes. But I think we also need to be careful not to let others divert our plans as they pursue their own agendas. And we shouldn’t feel our work is worthwhile only if it’s seen by a crowd. Eventually, Jesus did go to Jerusalem, but he did it in God’s timing. Jesus was focused on following his Father’s direction, just as we should be. We can start by asking for his guidance. (Huh. Fortunately, he ended better than he started.) #devotional #faith #faithatwork #faithandwork

This has to be voiced as often as possible. Translation clients, beware of agency malpractices! - Selecting the right translation partner is a big and expensive decision and not everything is as it seems. ! Typical red flag: A top-notch test or demo translation accompanied with a very low price. A simple calculation would show that the price would hardly cover: 1. Reasonable translator’s fee 2. Reasonable proofreader’s fee 3. Agency costs 4. Agency profit Tip: Ask the agency for an expected hourly input of the translator in nr. of words. Use this to calculate the possible translator’s hourly income (minus expected agency margin). The resulting hourly pay is often indicative that they can’t hire a professional. It can also indicate that there’s no budget for proofreading (are you on the same page as for services you’re paying?) Of course, the agency’s fee can be high with no intention to spend most on translators. That’s not so easy to find, compared to conspicuously low prices.
