Injection molders' sales reach 5-year high This week Plastics News will publish the second part of their annual ranking of North American injection molders. The June 17 issue ranked the top 100 companies. This issue includes data for 498 companies with sales from $78 million and below. The total sales for this list is $41.8 billion. That's up 2.7 percent over last year's report and marks a third straight year of gains in the average sales per company. And at $71.9 million, it's 10 percent higher than 5 years ago. As my experience in the Injection Molding industry expands now 40+ years, I have come to appreciate the ever-changing landscape. Years back I clearly remember learning how to “Squeeze and squirt” on Van Dorn classic machines where you had limit switch’s and three or four knobs to adjust process parameters. Not much in the way of “scientific” molding back then for the fact the equipment technology prohibited scientific studies as we have today to insure part to part repeatability. In those years I clearly remember senior molders stating it was an “Art”. Injection molding has no paint brushes but rather defined process requirements to allow a technician to diagnose an unstable process whether it be material, machine, mold or atmospheric conditions on a scientific platform. Rheology, cavity pressure, decoupled, short shot, part weight studies and such were far and few back in the earlier days. It seemed to be more “Art”, as I was told as a young man and not knowing any better. However, as my years progressed it became very apparent that Science was the real key that provides stable processes and that adopting and embracing Scientific Molding methodology provided increased efficiency and productivity. As my knowledge base progressed in the process side, it too progressed in the equipment side where I began a business remanufacturing those old “Classic” machines and fitted them with PLC’s, linear positioning and proportional hydraulics along with writing algorithms for temperature, pressure and velocity control. This allowed those old “squeeze and Squirt” classic machines to now have the capability to embrace the science. This transformed those old machines into reliable and repeatable machines and for those that where willing to adopt the science, benefitted to more stable processes and reduced part defects proportionally. Fast forward to the past few years where “Reshoring” is now a common model, I urge any injection molding business to train their staff on a scientific model rather retaining the squeeze and squirt, trial and error, processing. I have been blessed to have younger technicians that have embraced Scientific Molding principles, use them daily, and have found they can produce extremely stable processes. I have spoken about the equipment capabilities for the most part however we must also expand the knowledge base of our employees to meet the required technologic demands to reshore and take back what was once ours to begin with. Invest in training staff and you will never look back and see it as a bad ROI. “Minds are like parachutes, they only work if they open”

It’s not uncommon for Gardner Business Media, Inc. brands Production Machining and Modern Machine Shop to cover the same #CNC machine shops given there’s a bit of overlap in terms of audience and editorial focus. What I never envisioned was a recent project that involved GBM brands Production Machining, MoldMaking Technology and Plastics Technology — covering the same manufacturer in the same month of May no less. The connection between MMT in terms of mold tooling and PT in terms of injection molding seems fairly clear. But, how did precision, high-volume turning/PM fit in? For Eden Manufacturing Inc, it’s actually the perfect combination of capabilities to effectively serve the medical industry. Eden Manufacturing, which now has four Milacron Roboshot injection molding machines and one Swiss-type lathe from Star CNC Machine Tool Corp, was created to complement Eden Tool Company’s moldmaking capabilities with machining equipment from Makino and others. What the company is shooting for is this: Machine a medical part on its Swiss-type lathe, create the tooling to overmold plastic on just a portion of that part, then perform the overmolding process on one of its injection molding machines. The timing was perfect as the May issues of MMT and PT will be on display at NPE: The Plastics Show in Orlando. And, for me, PM’s May issue has an emphasis on Swiss-type machining on our editorial calendar. I have to believe this is the first time three GBM media brands featured cover stories about the same manufacturer in the same month.
