A point to ponder: Yesterday I was at gate 2 waiting on my flight to head back to Houston. Due to bad weather our inbound flight that would take us to Houston became delayed. Typically while I wait I will listen to music or a podcast and of course I will people-watch … yesterday I was given a live show of how not to compose yourself. I’ve seen this behavior far too many times in life. It’s obvious people become agitated when expectations are not met, I am no exception - but I myself know how to work through the issue…MANY DO NOT. #emotionalintelligence. In this live show occurring right in front of me the expectation for this 1 passenger was to make it on time to his destination which did not occur. Rather then handling the situation as a grown up, in a respectful manner, this person decided instead to yell at the attendant that was staffing the counter (as if it was her fault). His voice elevated to an obvious level about how he was wronged and so forth. The attendant handled it well, she stayed calm despite being yelled at, held a strong posture of authority and attempted to answer any questions being asked of her even though she would get continuously cut-off. This grown adult was throwing a TANTRUM because things did not go his way. Somewhere in life he learned that yelling was an acceptable form of communication that would reward him with a result or contrary he never learned how to deal with conflict constructively. Unfortunately he has yet to learn that handling himself in such a way makes him look like a fool, one who lacks control, one who lacks emotional intelligence. I’ve met many of folks who behave this way. Some are so-called leaders that believe yelling at someone will accomplish something, but often find that they are stuck in a rut unable to further advance because no one wants to be around them. Throw in someone who can’t control their language by using curse words while also yelling will make my own level of respect for that person drop significantly. On yesterday someone’s daughter or mother or sister was yelled at for something beyond their control by someone who lacked control. And by the way all that yelling accomplished nothing. We need grown ups, we need grown up leaders. I still believe You can catch more bees with honey than with vinegar. #lead #betheexample

April Musings: The Leader we love! - Do you squirm when your manager suggests that they want to talk one on one with your team member? - Do you work hard to protect your “specialty” at your workplace, in the hope that it makes you indispensable? - When interviewing a potential candidate, do you filter out and reject candidates, that are better than your own level of expertise?   If the answer to one or more of the above questions is Yes, then you will have to work hard to get the “Leader we love” badge! Go read the questions again and consider if this happens albeit subconsciously with you.   Talking of Love, Leadership begets leadership! The side effect of having a good leader in your Organization is that they will inspire a lot of people to become good leaders. Over the years, the three tenets of good leadership that I have learnt but still find difficult to practice effectively are:   Listen – Team members want you to listen to their challenges, not jump in and solve them with precise instructions. Your approach at meeting these challenges may not always be the best. They will execute with passion if you guide them to find "their" best approach.   Empower – Leadership at scale, means that you help your team understand the challenges, provide direction, and empower them to go above and beyond. Delegation is key. You can feed them for a lifetime if you teach them to fish.   Inspire – The most essential ingredient of leadership. If you can listen and empower effectively you are already on the journey to create another leader. Inspirational leaders have empathy while working with their peers and team members. They handle stressful situations calmly and most importantly they are not out there to show everyone who the BOSS is!   As a software programmer, I have always been fascinated with recursive algorithms. There is that subtle elegance in them, and the most important ingredient in a recursive algorithm is the terminating condition. Inspiring leadership to me is a recursive algorithm that creates more leaders and then lets go! Let those leaders find their horizons and, in the process, create more leaders. #leadership #empathy #talent

I have lost count of how many times inadequate training has been found as a major problem throughout my time in the midstream industry. The importance of training cannot be overstated, especially as some near retirement and industry trends change and technology develops. At Hart Energy’s SUPER DUG Conference & Exhibition 2024 in Fort Worth, industry leaders highlighted significant progress in emissions reductions across shale plays while addressing the growing demand for natural gas. Despite this progress, there was a strong call for increased investment to support ongoing population, economic, and technological growth. Marshall Adkins from Raymond James illustrated the impact of technology on energy demand, particularly the substantial power consumption required by advanced AI chips. This highlighted the critical role of continuous investment in natural gas to maintain grid stability as renewable sources like solar and wind expand. Will Van Loh, CEO of Quantum Energy Partners, LLC, emphasized the financial and environmental benefits of greener practices, such as switching frac fleets from diesel to natural gas, which saved costs and significantly reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Permian operators shared their achievements in reducing emissions and enhancing operational efficiency, such as Diamondback Energy's use of clear drilling fluids and ConocoPhillips' significant reduction in gas flaring. Additionally, BPX's near-total electrification of its Permian wells and the creation of private microgrids showcased efforts to reduce dependence on strained public grids. Water management also emerged as a crucial focus, with operators like WaterBridge and Deep Blue promoting recycled water usage over disposal. Despite advances in renewable energy, oil and gas remain a major part of the energy supply.
