My office, the North Carolina Sentencing and Policy Advisory Commission, is thrilled to host the National Association of Sentencing Commissions’ 2024 conference next month! This conference brings together sentencing experts across the United States to exchange information, ideas, data, expertise, and experiences related to sentencing policies, guidelines, and commissions. The theme of the conference is Sentencing Then and Now: The Role of Commissions in Sentencing Reform, 1993/1994 to 2023/2024.

Yesterday, International Center for Law & Economics and the Information Technology & Innovation Foundation filed an amicus in the 8th Circuit opposing the FCC's new "digital discrimination" rules. "The Order will not only stifle new deployment to unserved areas, but also will delay network upgrades and maintenance out of fear of alleged disparate effects." Looking to explore the latest in Ethics, National Security, and the Rule of Law? Virginia Tech Applied Research Corporation's, Maegen Nix, Decision Science Division Director and Welton Chang, Co-founder & CEO of Pyrra Technologies Inc. contributed to the latest publication of Center for Ethics and the Rule of Law (CERL) and Oxford University Press (OUP) called “Hybrid Threats and Grey Zone Conflict – The Challenge to Liberal Democracies”. Maegen Nix and Welton Chang were part of 39 contributors to this new CERL-OUP volume which explores navigating rivalries that take place below the threshold of armed conflict. In addition, the book reflects on three main questions. What are the strengths and shortcomings of the existing rules and institutions of internal law in responding to hybrid threats and grey zone conflict? What roles the laws play as an instrument, domain, and object of geopolitical contestation in the contemporary strategic environment? And, how should liberal democracies respond to challenges posed by hybrid and grey zone competition in a way that does not undermine the very values they seek to uphold? Finally, a MENA category! …well at least in federally sponsored research. Often individuals from the Middle East or North Africa (MENA) have been pushed under the “White” category in studies…losing the impact of how treatment, diagnosis, and health management differs for them. The Office of Management and Budget (OMB)’s update to #race and #ethnicity categories replaces the last version from 1997 and provides new reporting requirements for race and ethnicity data. The update also demonstrates self-identified multiracial or multiethnic approaches to data capture. #Diversity #research #representationmatters

BLOG POST: USPTO Announces National Strategy for Inclusive Innovation At an event on Capitol Hill on May 1, the USPTO, in conjunction with the agency’s work with the Council for Inclusive Innovation (CI2), a new National Strategy for Inclusive Innovation. The Strategy aims to grow the economy, create quality jobs, and address global challenges by increasing participation in STEM, inventorship, and innovation among youth and those from historically underrepresented and underresourced communities. IIPSJ is encouraged that, through the National Strategy for Inclusive Innovation, the USPTO takes a leadership role in meeting the great challenge of confronting the demographic, economic, and geographic under-representation of citizens in the innovation economy, and commends the National Strategy for Inclusive Innovation and its social justice-oriented perspective towards the American innovation ecosystem.
