The psychology of existential crises – from climate change to poverty – is not what we think. 👉 Here’s what you need to know. Note: This is a guest post by Renee Lertzman, PhD, who I mentioned in yesterday’s post (https://t.ly/V4mfT). There was a lot of interest in her work, so I invited her to say more about it. ---- The psychology of existential crises is not about changing behaviors, nudging or creating more sexy and compelling stories. 👉 It is about being attuned to anxieties, ambivalence and aspirations. It is about leveraging what we currently know about the psyche, and what actually works. 🌍 The problem with our climate work today is this: the proverbial elephant in the room is the sense that we are running out of time to address our world’s crises. When the house is on fire, we think, there is no time—we need to grab whatever is at hand to put the damned fire out. ➡ But when it comes to solving intractable, complex, interconnected problems—when it’s the whole world that’s on fire—this culturally conditioned bias to action can actually do more harm than good. So there is a lot of "telling, yelling, and selling" going on. That just doesn't work with these kinds of deeply complex issues. 👉 If I tell you what to do, yell at you about why you need to become a better, more caring person, or try to sell you a solution, nothing will happen. 🤷‍♂️ You will continue to feel anxious or manic, burning yourself out and alienating the very people you need to partner and engage with. 🤷‍♀️ In order to change the game, we need to be a GUIDE. • A Guide asks questions, listens, and evokes others' volition for change. • A Guide holds space, creates safety and embodies compassion. • A Guide leverages her expertise and knowledge skillfully, without dumping or blasting. • A Guide stays grounded and regulated, even when things get charged and scary. • A Guide helps others feel involved, respected, and part of the solution. 👉 A Guiding way of approaching existential crises feels a lot more like an invitation, and less like a sales pitch. Here’s an example: Imagine messaging, education and efforts to raise awareness about action that started with a question or prompt, asking you what you ALREADY know and ALREADY feel about these issues? That allowed space for having diverse and divergent opinions, beliefs and experiences? Where it was safe for people to say, "I don't know," and "I am scared." 👉 If we started learning and practicing these skills, we'd see significant results. We'd see more engagement, more receptivity, and many more people joining our work who currently are opting out. We'd see a movement more full of joy and health, less burnout and fatigue. The heartbreaking and unexpected closure of the University of the Arts in Philadelphia last week has surfaced dangerous trend for the arts in recent years. It feels like we are all being shaken by loss after loss of cultural touchstones. There are many reasons we know about for the closure, and some still being uncovered. But one is clearly a diminishing value being placed on the arts in schools. Despite national surveys showing the public agrees that the arts are a necessary, the arts face being squeezed out of K-12 schools. There is a narrowing range of core subjects that count as academic. Fewer resources and decreased attention mean that students are not taking arts subjects once they cease to be compulsory. Arguments to bring the arts back have been made about how arts integration leads to all sorts of other positive academic outcomes - like increases in test scores and math achievement. 👉While all of this is well and good, this is NOT the right way to argue for the arts. The arts are valuable NOT because of their connection to other academic subjects, they are essential to a well-rounded education, a well lived life, an inspired culture, and to an open mind. “We need to do a better job of telling our impact story.” I've been chatting with a lot of impact-driven organizations lately, and many of them have the same challenge. They're doing amazing things to enrich their communities, reduce their environmental footprints, and empower their employees, but they’re having a tough time sharing these inspiring stories with the world. In most cases, this is due to a lack of resources. There simply aren’t enough people—or hours in the day—to find and tell these stories. But in other cases, these organizations aren’t quite sure what stories to tell. Or how to tell them in an authentic way. Or even where or how to share them. An article I wish I wrote already (from 2021): "There's No Black Liberation Without Climate Reparations" by Tamara Toles O'Laughlin via Atmos. Quotes: "Juneteenth is a milestone in our collective reality, but that isn’t the same as having the space needed to build the strategy we will require to exist in the future. "New agreements can’t emerge without a sober reckoning with our history. "As awful as it is to wade through the truth of history, our active duty today is to show up for tomorrow." "Reparations and climate reparations are political frameworks that can respond to the ethical, financial, and civic necessity to wrestle with what the past has brought us. Now is the time to begin the work to heal souls. "It is incumbent upon our communities and movements to do the work of care and repair because we have the data, the stories, and very little time to move lots of people and money. I highly recommend this discussion between Amy Webb and Brene Brown about responding to our current environment. Some takeaways: ✍️ we're going through a "super cycle" of change right now: AI, wearables and biotechnology. It means the volume and speed of change may feel unmanageable. ✍️ we need leaders who can "drive into the skid" - i.e. when you drive on ice and start to skid, you need to avoid the kneejerk reaction which is to slam on the brakes. Instead, you need to drive into the skid. An Aussie equivalent would be to swim with the current if you get caught in a rip rather than fighting it. ✍️ a key skill for leaders is to cultivate our ability to respond calmly, even when faced with seemingly urgent situations. That will require intentional practice, and may require training. ✍️ the need to nurture organisational cultures of "learn it all" rather than "know it all". I'll always be a work in progress, but this has reinforced my intention to continue to cultivate practices that support me to be fully present, and to carve out time for deep thinking and abstract thought. For me that looks like regular coaching sessions, a daily "square breathing" practice, a return to journalling, and reconnecting with #Gestalt practices through a postgrad learning circle. https://lnkd.in/dcY9k3zr

Shein isn’t just SHEIN anymore. How are we letting them undermine so much of our other sustainability work? Ken Pucker at The Fletcher School at Tufts University keeps highlighting this disconnect - here is more from him: In July of last year, Shein pivoted from just selling its own branded apparel to becoming a marketplace where “other merchants can sell everything from $1,200 commercial ice makers to 50 cent safety pins direct to consumer.” This pit Shein against Temu and Amazon In March, #Shein announced that it would make its supply chain as a service to other brands. This would allow any brand to leverage Shein’s 6,000 Chinese factories, small batch, on demand model….while enabling Shein to capture even more #data detailing consumer preferences. What is less well understood is that Shein is now also using its supply chain and eyeballs to test not just new products, but, also new brands. Below are 10 brands that Shein is testing, each appealing to a different audience. For example, Emery Rose offers sophisticated fashion to mature women, Dazy specializes in Korean style fashion and Cuccoo is a footwear brand. (This, according to the site ChinaSellers) 🤯 These home made brands stand alongside Shein’s purchase of a stake in Forever 21 and Misguided….each of which provides Shein with even more options to sell around 4 billion units of disposable, mostly synthetic clothing…while its head of Communications is quick to note that Shein is “not a fast fashion brand.” 🤯 This claim is analogous to one of Shein’s principal investors, General Atlantic, staring a $3.5b Climate Solutions Fund, while also funding planet soiling Shein 🤯 As Shein, Temu, Cider and other instant fashion brands skirt US duties and do next to nothing to limit carbon emissions, brands that invest in and tout their sustainability credentials ….are ever more disadvantaged. Meanwhile, industry trade associations continue to lobby to maintain the status quo. It’s not all rainbows and butterflies. 🌈 🦋 ...but what if it could be? As an impact storyteller, you're probably not naive enough to think that one story will instantly turn the tides or solve deep rooted systemic problems or change the world. 🌎 But (because there’s always a but), it might bring you one step closer. What do I love most about writing for impact? Great storytelling can set a series of events in motion. ↗ Because when an experience is seen, heard, and understood, it’s no longer tucked away. It’s out in the world, and it has the ability to do something. To evoke the powerful feelings that make real change possible. 🫶🏻Empathy. 💥 Outrage. 🏆 Pride. 🤝 Duty. ⏰ Urgency. ❤️ Compassion. The stories that move our audiences to act aren’t always rainbows and butterflies, but maybe that’s not the point. Writing for impact is about painting a picture of what could be - the good, the bag, and the ugly - to help your donors take the next, best step. The question isn't "will your story solve our most pressing challenges?" The question should be, "what can my story do today?" Yesterday, I sat in the audience of an #NBCNews special program about Parenting in the Age of AI. The show was all based on interviews with specialists, including pediatricians, activists, the FBI (yes, the FBI), the head of Common Sense Media, parents, and teens. One of the best interviews came from a 16-year-old whose parents didn't give her a phone until age 16 and made her sign a contract with rules on the day she got one. Today, she thanks them as she sees how her daily life and mental state differ from her friends'. The pediatrician said that, according to her 6-year-old son, Siri "is a nice lady who lives in California." They cannot differentiate AI from reality. This is my take: if you are still trying to implement rules and tech etiquette in your home, you are way late in the game. AI will likely bring more harm than benefits to young people. You are doing your child a disservice by allowing him or her to be on a device all day and night without guidance or supervision. Kids (and adults) need human connection. Start limiting time and content (no worries about their peers, as other parents will follow). Start reading about this topic and discussing it with your children as much as you talk about food and sports (well, I hope you do!). I've been covering this topic for quite a while and can offer some quick tips: (1) If you need to give them a phone before they are 14, get a Gabb phone. It tracks location, and it has everything but the internet. (2) No phone at the dining table or in the bedroom. Get them an analogic alarm to wake up and charge the phone at night in the living room (3) No phone/iPads during playdates (4) No phone at schools - save their teachers from this nightmare (5) If they are small, walk around with books, cards, and crayons in your bag. Don't give them your device in the stroller or restaurants. It's a door of no return. (6) Want to explore the topic further? Read Jonathan Haidt's The Anxious Generation. He says that children should avoid social media until they are 16, a recommendation made by the US Surgeon General. (7) Listen to Ezra Klein's NYT podcast with Jean Twenge (May 2023). (“Love is the bridge to all you want.” -Rumi.) Unhealed trauma can wreak havoc on your entire system. That’s what it did to Karen. Then she started to write out appreciation for everything and everyone. Sometimes two hours of writing. A couple of things to try to develop the ability to experience life’s enchantment, the power of love, the sense of being eternally safe: writing all the things you’re grateful for, meditation, and processing fear. Meditation has given Karen insights and psychic experiences, like remote viewing, and increased intuition. “Fear is praying for what you don’t want.” Fear decreases higher brain functions and increases lower/reptilian brain functions and rushes blood to hands and feet for flight or fight. It decreases blood to your organs which is damaging long-term. So, in fear, you can’t think straight. “Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative and creation, there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. We’re getting a lot of messages from doers on our post-Skoll Stanford Social Innovation Review article “Big Bet Bummer.” Here’s an example: “Just wanted to thank you for writing it, and also say that it was a bit creepy — as if you were directly peering into our organization and describing our current situation.” Here’s another: “Thanks for this! I’ve never heard the phrase falling off a cliff as often as I did at Skoll.” Right now, Big Bets seem to be driving more anxiety than joy. The more people I talked to, the more it felt like the hungover aftermath of a great party: those who weren’t invited feel left out, and those who went are wondering how they’ll get through the day ahead…. Here are a few sobering observations about big bet philanthropy: 𝐎𝐧𝐞: 𝐢𝐭’𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐚 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 (𝐚𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐲𝐞𝐭). Three names always come up: the Audacious Project, MacKenzie Scott, and to a lesser degree, Co-Impact. They basically comprise the entirety of what we hoped would become a movement. 𝐓𝐰𝐨: 𝐢𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐬 “𝐫𝐞-𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐤𝐞𝐝” 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬. Big Bets can accelerate an organization's plans in order to justify a huge infusion of dough. That puts you at real risk of a momentum stall when that big grant runs out. 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐞: 𝐢𝐭 𝐨𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐞. Growth is linear. Scale is exponential. The most successful big bet recipients have built the launchpad for true scale. However, more than a few big bets have only focused on organization growth.  𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐫: 𝐢𝐭’𝐬 𝐚 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐥. There are just enough of these big grants going around to make everyone feel like a failure if they don’t get one and everyone feels obligated to apply for them. Big Bets have enormous potential—we need them. Here’s some ideas to make it work: 𝐎𝐧𝐞: 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐮𝐢𝐭 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐛𝐢𝐠 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬. We really do need a next layer of funding, and funders listen to funders. Really rich people need to recruit other really rich people, and more institutional funders need to join the fray. We need more big bet money. 𝐓𝐰𝐨: 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐥𝐚𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐩𝐚𝐝𝐬. Big Bets need to focus on scalable ideas, and frame it as surge funding, so that even if budgets subside to pre-big bet trajectories, organizations will still be on a completely different impact trajectory. 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐞: 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐭. Sometimes a 10-year stream of funding would ultimately lead to more impact than, say, a three-year blast. The promise of a steady million bucks a year of unrestricted money is hugely valuable in the context of a smart scale strategy. 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐫: 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐠𝐨 𝐢𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐞. What makes Threads different than Twitter/X? 1. 📲 Format and Presentation Threads is a visual storytelling platform. Posts are formatted as vertical cards, similar to IG posts. Each post can house multiple images, creating a carousel. This format is powerful for storytelling, the cornerstone of nonprofit comms and marketing. 2. 🌎 Audience and Reach On Threads, you are transitioning your existing IG follower list onto a new platform. Your launch is a targeted engagement strategy for existing users. Threads is a growing platform, with 30 million signups in the first day. Twitter reach, on the other hand, is shrinking. Visits to Twitter dropped 7.3% YoY in 2023. Your growth on the platform is unlikely at best. 3. 💬 Context and Engagement Threads allows more characters (up to 500). Threads also includes the option to attach links, photos, gifs or videos up to 5 mins. You can use Threads to drive traffic, sure. But more meaningfully you can leverage more characters to tell better stories, foster conversation, share powerful visual content, and create a sense of community with your existing IG audience. With high engagement rates on IG, Threads is now a powerful tool to connect with followers and drive meaningful interactions. 4. 🔐 Privacy and Control Meta has raised concerns about data collection and compliance with GDPR. It’s not even available to EU users yet. This should be considered when deciding to adopt. 5. 🌐 Integration Threads is planning to integrate with other social media platforms to expand reach and control. Twitter doesn't directly integrate with the “fediverse”, but it does support integration with third-party services through its API. In short, Threads and Twitter both offer threaded conversations. But distinctive features should be leveraged to target audiences with the right message, at the right time, in the right place. This month marks a full decade to *that* psychedelic experience that opened my eyes and heart to the existence beyond the veil... Call it spiritual emergence or conscious awakening, brief versions of this story have been shared on various podcasts over the years; I finally sat down to record the unabridged story. It's quite a sexy tale to tell, that one has become conscious and has radically changed their life through a psychedelic trip! This is what the media and what the people want. But while the journey has been keyholed by one my all-time favorite psychedelic substances, the truth is that trip was one single event in a longer chain of occurrences, some of them so damned human they couldn't be further from the fantasy if they tried... But that total sum of events having to do with failed relationships, trauma, debilitating depression, workaholism, systemic oppression, bureaucracy, and yes--full-moon meditations, breathwork, crystals, the mysteries of New Orleans, fancy LA parties, and an amazing spiritual revelation at no less than Coachella--all of those together, have led me to that door that was opened for me 10 years ago, and to where I am standing today. It's the integration of all the parts that make both our human + spiritual experiences whole, singular and complete. We are privileged to experience first-hand the mysteries of awakening and the extraordinary potential for healing and growth we have available to us through plant medicines and synthetic mind-expanding substances. This is my intimate “journal-entry” of spiritual self-discovery, shedding light on the transformative power of psychedelics and the global evolution of consciousness. "When we enact the kind of modern self-help-industry-becoming-our-best-selves model of healing, what we are doing is importing the logic of colonial separatism into our practice. We see it replicating over and over in the psychedelic space, as the role [of medicine] helps us with individual healing so that we can be better-adjusted citizen-subjects of the dominant culture." Powerful interview with Alnoor Ladha in DoubleBlind that's worth reading in full. He argues that the Global north- centric narrative of progress in the psychedelic space risks replicating colonial harms. He emphasizes the need to decolonize psychedelics by challenging power structures and fostering true interconnectedness with all life forms. This means dismantling systems of oppression, understanding the impacts of colonial capitalism, and embracing community-centered approaches. Pivoting is like connecting with your market better, and making better business decisions. It serves the two biggest purposes of Business; Creating Value for Consumers, and Generating Revenue for Business. A running business is more than just an idea. It faces many ground realities that the idea didn't. So slow down, or take a slightly different path when the road is too rough. There is no shame in this. It only makes you a better Business Person!
