Why the Recent Ticketek Incident is Important for Marketers and Why it is Likely to Happen More Often… As marketers, we are facing new challenges with stricter privacy laws and the end of third-party cookies. However, a 2023 Digital & Marketing in Focus joint research report produced by Arktic Fox and Six Degrees Executive suggests that 59% of brands say they are not ready for these changes. Almost 80% of marketers aim to grow their businesses in the next year. But, without third-party cookies, this will be harder. Because of this, 31% of marketers are focusing on developing a first-party data strategy. Sadly, only one in four see data privacy as a top priority. As we collect more first-party data, we need to be aware of the rise in data breaches. From 2018 to 2023, the number and severity of breaches have significantly increased, as reported by Webber Insurance Services, with 2022 seeing 68 serious incidents. Hackers are now targeting sensitive information like financial, health, and biometric data. Even with more spending on cybersecurity, attacks are getting more advanced. The recent Ticketek Australia breach illustrates how serious this issue is. This incident might have exposed millions of customer names, dates of birth, and email addresses. The Australian Federal Police are involved, and Australians are being warned to watch out for scams. As reported by Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) Australia, Home Affairs and Cybersecurity Minister Clare O'Neil spoke out advising Australians to be vigilant: “I’d ask Australians to be especially vigilant and on the lookout for scams during a time like this.” This gap in readiness from marketers combined with the rise in data breaches highlights the need for businesses to be careful when collecting and storing first-party data. We must balance our growth goals with strong data privacy and security measures. Do your customers dive into the deep end of your product details? If so, avoid using Quick Shop modals on your category pages. instead, let customers swim in the finer points of your product pages to make their purchase decisions.  If your customers prefer the shallow end of the details pool let them splash around on the category pages with Quick Shop modals and Add To Cart buttons without having to go to a PDP. Not sure which approach suits your audience? An A/B test of "View Details" vs. "Quick Shop" will provide a fast lap around the pool so you know how deep your shoppers like to swim. Typically, electronics, personal care, nutrition, and customized fits attract detail-oriented shoppers. Shoppers of consumables, products with high familiarity, and sensitive price elasticity are all candidates for Quick Shop modals and Adding To Cart from the category page.

IT’S TIME TO STOP ALL THIS BULLSHIT FINAGLING ABOUT AGENCY COMPENSATION MODELS. Of course, the first cost consideration in any agency compensation model should be the knowledge and experience of the agency altogether and the people actually assigned to staff the account at various levels of responsibility and performance, i.e., “Getting paid for years instead of minutes” based on the SOW. Then estimated manhours, hourly rates, and timesheets (both internal and external) reflecting agency out-of-pocket costs such as payroll, overhead and administration, required travel and accommodations as mutually agreed upon, and a little thing (typically of no interest to client advertisers) called agency profit margin. And that is why I always have and always will support the COST + FIXED FEE agency compensation model, which is not just about “outputs”, “widgets” or “deliverables”. And if either party in the client/agency relationship is ever dissatisfied with the financial arrangement, they can always renegotiate or part company.  P.S.  And like all things CREATIVE, there are never any guaranteed SALES results, because the consumer decides - not me or you – and they are influenced by so many other things in their purchase decisions beyond advertising (aka, the classic 4Ps ... Product, Price, Place, and Promotion). Or, as the iconic and legendary ad man Jerry Della Femina once famously said, "Nothing kills a bad product faster than good advertising". 😎             

Are we finally moving away from the funnel? And how are you working on your transition away from linear funnel-based reporting? Having utilized the Sirius Decisions Demand Waterfall methodology for years, it’s great to see how this model once again is challenged with a renewed focus on brand-building activities and alternative models like the signal-based model introduced by Chris Walker Yet, we find ourselves navigating murky waters - and how we transition from a more performance marketing funnel view can still be unclear. I believe replacing MQLs with self-declared intent signals (such as demo sign-ups, sales inquiries, sign-ups for strategy sessions, etc.) could be part of the transition (Thanks for the inspiration Steve Patti). We cannot compel customers to be in the market, nor can we force them through a linear funnel. However, we can cultivate awareness, link awareness to pain points, and foster trust once customers are in-market to buy. By substituting MQLs with self-declared intent, we remove some of the guesswork. Moreover, understanding the journey up to that point through attribution and direct customer feedback grants us deeper insights into the channels and content pieces that played a part in moving customers in-market. On the day to day basis I steer on many KPI's and metrics at Imagine5. Brand awareness, engagement metrics, mid- and lower funnel performance metrics like follower and visitor growth. But in the end we have one primary metric by which we measure the succes of what we do. And that's impact. Are we able to shift people's belief that their individual action matters, and most importantly are people actually making changes in their lives that help create a shift in our social norms towards a more sustainable future for both people and planet. Both are relevant and effective and can be used based on the strategy and the frequency of communications. Is one better than the other? It mostly depends on the need and the type of information being sent. . SMS / Texting More than 50% of all of us check our text messages multiple times per day. For time-sensitive messages SMS is the preferred avenue. Opportunities include: -Event reminders -Appointments -Reservation updates -Loyalty programs -News alerts Avoid sending before 8:00am and after 9:00pm and make the content both timely and relevant. Email Email has been the backbone of marketing strategies for decades and is familiar and accessible. Emails are different because they have formatting options and dynamic content elements and can provide excellent engagement metrics. The article suggests a cross channel platform like our ShareDirect can provide personalization and robust design using email and for more urgency using SMS. So, both channels are still very relevant, preferred and seamless to integrate.
