As communicating with employees becomes a critical priority for companies, many are looking for internal communications talent who have an editorial bent. -- Amazon is looking for a leader for its workplace and operations executive communications team -- Law firm Latham & Watkins is hiring a director of internal communications Goldman Sachs is looking for a VP-level role to lead internal communications -- Notion is looking for an executive to lead content and communications for its workforce and employees -- Fintech startup Ripple is looking for an internal communications manager who will “own” the editorial calendar -- Understood.org is looking for a director of internal communications who will be responsible for creating content for internal channels. -- McCann Worldgroup is looking for a manager who will run newsletters and content across communications teams Companies increasingly view employees as they do external audiences: As people to be engaged with, courted, and communicated with regularly. As a result, a growing number of organizations are developing editorial content aimed specifically at internal audiences. That means content responsibilities are increasingly becoming part of internal communicators’ job descriptions. “One of the big reasons we’re seeing more internal communications and content roles is culture wars,” said Kate Meissner, co-founder at D.C.-based Velocity Partners and a former EVP at Edelman. “People now want their workplaces to be places that institutionalize their values.” “I strongly believe it should be called employee communications,” said Becca Chambers ✨, chief communications officer at ControlUp. “Employees are less engaged and they don’t know how to reach them. Social media again gets global ire. Is it fair to blame only tech giant owning the channels. From a parents view - Current educational system exposes children to digital channels early on. As parents we see a whiz kid in our children then- unaware of the grave consequences. When we live & flaunt social media lives - how can blame someone else. As a society we are introducing social media to young adults. Like every medium it has pros & cons- Pros - availability of information, flexibility, ease of use Cons - early & uncontrolled access to uncontrolled information, mental pressure & stress Solution - Lead by example - Be Responsible & teach responsible usage at both home & school. It is a behaviour change for you first & them later. “I just need a few key messages that I should hit.” It’s a common request that every communications pro has encountered many times ahead of a media interview. And if you’re anything like me, you roll your eyes. Why? Because key messages are fine and good, but only if they are used to form a broader narrative. More often than not, they’re seen as a license to be repetitive, robotic and focused only on your own outcome. Brute-forcing key messages down a reporter’s throat doesn’t help them do their job. Media opportunities are a two way street - you give value, share expertise and contextualize whatever you’re talking about in exchange for the profile the media outlet can give you and your business. The best and only way to respect this duality is to shape a simple and memorable story which contains the messages you want to hit, and which shows instead of telling why what you’re discussing is important and meaningful. I used to keep a folder of video clips that could’ve been titled “when key messages go wrong” - often depicting some hapless executive or politician stumbling through a repeated response straight from the message sheet he or she was handed. They universally looked silly and unprepared, and the interview did nothing but undermine trust and damage the speaker’s reputation. Next time, before the camera starts rolling, think about a story instead of a key message. Your brand will thank you.

🥐 A little food for thought from Eleanor Hawkins. 🥐 This story illustrates both the necessity for and tension between comms and marketing. Brand reputation is critical. It takes just one misstep to cause irreparable harm (or at least significant damage) to a brand. The good news is that a healthy partnership between marketing and comms leaders, along with connection to the whole org, can impart strength and creativity within an organization.

This makes me a tad bit uncomfortable… Asking a journalist to make a correction. Luckily, most journalists are great about it in the rare instances we’ve had to request one, but it’s still super awkward. To reduce the likelihood of errors before a story hits the press, it's important to do the following: - Triple-check all facts and figures before sharing information with the media; make sure phone numbers work, confirm pricing and hours of operation - basically, check anything that someone could get wrong or misinterpret. - Be clear and concise in your communication to the journalist. - Highlight and note the spelling of the company name in your email (especially if the spelling is unusual or it’s a particularly long name.) - Provide a press release or detailed background information, containing all necessary information. - Ensure your website or landing page is up-to-date with relevant details. - Offer journalists advanced notice to allow sufficient time for research and writing their stories. - Be available to address any questions or connect them with subject matter experts promptly. Peter Adams of Marketing Dive: Disney deepens CTV strategy with new shoppable formats, ‘advergaming.' Disney is trying to level up its connected TV (CTV) strategy with new ad formats that integrate games and shoppable features. The gamified offerings, or “advergaming” formats, are coming exclusively to Hulu and ESPN as part of a partnership with BrightLine. A trivia game and beat-the-clock challenge are available at launch, with Topgolf acting as charter advertiser of the latter. Disney also worked with artificial intelligence firm Kerv on three formats, called Sync, L-Bar and Impulse, that use a mix of QR codes, graphics and product carousels to drive transactions via CTV.
