Yesterday, I got to interview Dennis Depenbusch for Digital Health KC's Healthcare 201 series. Entrepreneur turned investor, Dennis always has valuable things to say and last night was no exception. With a packed room, Dennis started by saying that this room is "exactly the kind of thing investors like to see and it's remarkable what Digital Health KC has been able to do in just a year." Dennis wouldn't say this if he didn't mean it. We even had an investor from Chicago join us. Thank you, Jonathan Ellis of Sandalphon Capital, for joining us!   When I introduced Dennis, I said that Dennis invited me to Park City for a Mid-America Healthcare Investors Network (MHIN) meeting in 2021. Had I not been there to hear SpringTide Ventures' Austin Walters talk, I wouldn't have had the chain of events that set me on the Digital Health KC path. That is the power of getting in the same room, sharing ideas, and opening your eyes to new possibilities. I challenged the audience to find one thing Dennis said and fill in the blanks for themselves: "Had I not heard Dennis say ____, I would not have ______." Let's see who wins the contest.   While it's still early, Dennis' words that have been playing in my head the most are "Know what is important; cut the rest." He said these words within the context of the moments when companies need to downsize to survive, and he gave an example of a company that had to go from 58 to 3 people but then they made their way out of the danger zone and into success. While I am not in that situation today, "Know what is important; cut the rest." is a powerful mantra in how we use our resources, especially our time. How do you ask when you want to know information, newspapers 📰 existing in wilderness and they would know but your understanding or such of how is none of your business but you don't want to step onto it. that's where Ai is good. for this culture how do I get answers to availability of papers with outstanding information rather than division questions. ai write me greetings to gage information people would have in 7 questions. most to least of information revealed by first question. AI tries to be politically, culture, fact, peer, and such correct so it makes sense it will get a net of replying back. But is that qualities to build or division? really 🤔 palette 🎨 here need to know Africa is like the entire globe into one continent. hugest but map makes it smaller 🤔 original design HUGE. Map smaller. hugest area not having any would be odd the US the average is 30-220 miles between newspapers and finding in the wild.

Raising Capital? Tips from the Inside Dennis Depenbusch, who heads the New Ventures Initiative - Corporate Venture Capital at Blue Cross Blue Shield Association of Kansas, and Maria Flynn of Digital Health KC gave many good tips on approaching and interacting with investors. Below are a few of those tips. • Review the investors' website carefully to see if you are a match. The investors spend a lot of time on their wording. Don't chase what doesn't match. • Attend networking events to build your network of investors. If you know an investor, ask them to introduce you to other investors. • Investors are in the relationship business. Nurture your relationships. • Research the investor. Be sure they are someone you want to be in a relationship with for five years. • If you attend a conference, have a playbook six weeks before and prebook as many meetings as possible. • At conferences, hang out at social events and interact. You never know who you may bump into. • When evaluating an investor, ensure you have shared values, call their references, and see if they have enough capital for follow-on funding The most tragic flaw Dennis has seen in entrepreneurs is being uncoachable. #redpointsummit #healthmanagement #healthtech #digitalhealth #hospitalmanagement #physicianburnout

Why not save the planet? I got a lot of messages about my metro Detroit transportation service, The Night Move yesterday. So I’ll share a bit more. From the beginning, it just didn’t sit right, that we’d be running up and down Woodward, burning tons of fuel and emitting way too much of who knows what into the atmosphere. (I’m sure there’s someone who knows…) So we decided that not only would we provide a service to the party people, we’d do our best to serve Mother Earth. We ran our fleet entirely on biodiesel, reducing harmful emissions, and helping the used oil supply chain to reuse spent oil. In addtion, we dontated the equivalent of 1 tree per rider on our “public” transportation shuttle, through a local non-profit. There would be no way to totally eliminate emissions (no EV at the time, and it’s arguable if those emissions are just further up the supply chain), but we found ways to reduce and offset. We dubbed it “eco-conscious transportation”. I’m looking at you #cannabis industry. Vape carts are here to stay, and recycling them is proving to be a big challenge. This story reflects so much of what goes wrong in our decision-making. Early in my career, the city manager of Traverse City, in the United States, told me a story. Three years previously, he said, retailers in the CBD had approached the city requesting more car parking spaces.   The city bureaucrats went through their usual decision-making process. They commissioned a technical study – a parking needs analysis – which proved that, according to the parameters of the study, there was a parking shortage. So, they looked at the most efficient way to provide additional parking. They settled on a multi-storey car park and short-listed three potential locations, then consulted the community – who said they didn’t like any of the options and preferred that the money be spent on public transport. The city said this was ‘outside the brief’ – they were conducting a parking needs analysis, not a public transport study. The bureaucrats decided on a location, which triggered a bitter battle that lasted for three years, paralysing decision making in the city. The conflict left deep scars within both the city bureaucracy and the wider community. The proposal was eventually overturned by a citizens’ referendum. The city manager concluded: ‘I’m never making another major decision like this. The political process is fundamentally flawed.’ (He used a different ‘f’ word, but you get the drift.) This past week I spoke with Rush University System for Health Chief Innovation Officer Anil Saldanha to discuss key priorities and tech trends he’s most excited about. Here’s what Anil shared with me in our interview: — Q: What are your tech-related priorities for 2024? 1) Chronic care management, with a particular focus on uncontrolled hypertension 2) Greater health equity, particularly closing the large mortality age gap between the higher and lower socioeconomic areas Rush covers 3) Precision medicine informatics Q: Are there any AI efforts at Rush you’re particularly excited about? We’ve built a GenAI assistant, leveraging OpenAI’s foundation models on Microsoft Azure, to support veterans with PTSD as part of Rush’s Road Home Program. We’re still in the research phase, but I’m excited about its potential. Other areas we’re exploring AI-driven solutions: • Synthetic data generation for research purposes and oncology clinical trials • Precision medicine in oncology • Identifying high-risk patients as part of our population health efforts • Reducing the administrative burden of revenue cycle management via more streamlined coding and reduced errors • Quality measure reporting to various entities (MA plans, commercial payers, etc.) Q: Any areas where you think there’s whitespace to develop AI-driven solutions? Quality. There’s no uniformity in quality measures across different programs and payers, and measures are constantly shifting. It feels like there’s an opportunity for technology to simplify this. One of the great benefits to being a newer organization is the ability to quickly build in new tools to help solve our customers' challenges. After seeing multiple funders we work with struggle to manage complex associations within grantee organizations and between different grants, we rapidly co-developed this new feature with a couple of our customers.
