We love getting suggestions from our clients. Most of the time, we get great ideas on new capabilities! But sometimes, their ideas already exist in our software… they just don’t know about them! It’s a great way for us to identify ways we can improve our training! Last week we had someone suggest we automate their manual basis calculation! If you’re doing it manually (yikes) for each unit (double yikes), there are LOTS of ways of calculating basis between a renewable generator and sale hubs. If you need results FAST (don’t we all!), the easiest way is in APC Reporter’s Renewables tab. Calculate 7 DIFFERENT BASIS FLAVORS between 1000’s of units and 100’s of hubs… in 2 minutes! I'm pleased to share a significant development in long-duration energy storage. EPRI, Southern Company, and Storworks Power have successfully completed the world's largest pilot test of concrete thermal energy storage (CTES) technology. This pilot, conducted at Alabama Power Company's Ernest C. Gaston Electric Generating Plant, holds great promise for integrating renewable energy sources into the grid with greater flexibility. The CTES system effectively stores excess thermal energy during off-peak hours and discharges it to generate electricity when demand is high. It exceeded its initial goals, demonstrating the ability to store and discharge energy over a significant timeframe (over 700 hours). The technology also showcases its adaptability by integrating seamlessly with existing thermal power plants, including nuclear facilities, and even holds potential for industrial applications. This represents a critical step forward in long-duration energy storage, a key component of a reliable and affordable clean energy future. I’m happy to kick off the BP-26 Integrated Program Review today. Your participation and input are crucial to our success. Our priorities are closely aligned with BPA’s 2024-2028 Strategic Plan, and there’s a lot to be excited about. Transmission expansion is a big focus. If you follow our Evolving Grid workshops, you’ve seen how we are supporting load growth and helping hit clean state energy goals. There are several ambitious projects in the pipeline. We’re also working closely with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Bureau of Reclamation, and Energy Northwest to ensure our generating resources are reliable and efficient. We’re addressing everything from inflationary pressures to high-priority maintenance. On the IT front, we’re emphasizing cybersecurity and operational resilience. Protecting our critical infrastructure and ensuring we can deliver reliable power and transmission services is key to meeting our strategic goals. Environmental stewardship is another focus area. We’re making important investments in mitigation and working on new agreements with states and tribes. These efforts are vital for our long-term sustainability and commitment to the environment. Strengthening our workforce is vital to meeting these ambitious objectives. Exciting to see the PEC Alliance gaining momentum! This initiative will make it easy for any company to see the emissions avoided by investing in renewable power and storage and to support projects that achieve more impactful emissions reductions. To combat climate change we need to reduce emissions - it is common sense that we progress to valuing environmental attributes by emissions impact, rather than Megawatt hours. Recently, I had the honor of presenting on Artificial Intelligence’s Influence on Distributed Energy Resources (DER) at the 2024 G&T DER Roundtable Conference in Charlottesville, Virginia. This gathering brought together Generation and Transmission planners and operators from across the country, fostering discussions on DER trends, networking opportunities, and knowledge sharing. Here are some key topics from my talk: • T&D system consideration: Planning for AI-driven load growth • Forecasting: Long term and operational forecasting accuracy improvements • Orchestration: Leveraging AI for improved DER coordination • Enhanced modeling: Improved physics-based models • Pattern detection: Load characterization and disaggregation The event was an excellent platform to connect with industry experts, learn about challenges in DER integration, and discuss innovative DER programs. G&Ts are uniquely positioned to drive industry progress, especially in areas like electric vehicles, battery energy storage, aggregations, demand response, and energy efficiency. We are proud to be able to release our executive summary of the Regional Electricity & Energy Supply Proposal - a plan to decarbonise the gulf Savannah region by 2050. The REESP represents a critical collaboration between Gulf Savannah Development Inc (GSD), its members, the Qld Department of State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning (DSDILGP), & Mirabou Energy. Mirabou Energy would like to thank our partners & those members of GSD & communities in the region for their time & insights into the important issues for the region in achieving the Qld & Commonwealth government’s net zero emissions targets. From the initial concept through to the scoping of the REESP with GSD & DSDILGP, Mirabou Energy were excited for this strategic plan that aims to support the GSD region’s aspiration to achieve net-zero emissions in electricity & energy in transport by 2050. For GSD, its members, the region’s communities and DSDILGP, the REESP represents an actionable plan that provides a guide to decision makers on the choice of assets to achieve emission reduction targets for the region taking into consideration multiple drivers, trends & factors. The importance of the REESP as an actionable plan became increasingly obvious as GSD’s Project Governance Committee identified that: 1.Given the current physical electricity supply in the region, which includes east-coast grid connected regions as well as Isolated Power Systems, there currently is no similar plan for the whole GSD region that sets out how the region should achieve net zero emissions by 2050. 2.People & communities in the GSD region consume more electricity & energy in transport when compared with the Qld average & south-east Qld, which is the regulatory reference point for the Qld Government & Qld Competition Authority when setting policy instruments such as the Uniform Tariff Policy Community Service Obligation subsidy paid from the government to Ergon Energy. 3.The GSD region already makes a material net positive economic contribution to Qld's Gross State Product & that renewable energy investments & supporting infrastructure identified in the REESP would increase this net contribution four-fold. 4.The GSD region provides an opportunity as a pilot region to show case how all stakeholders could come together to achieve net zero emissions through industry enablement to support economic growth, & for First Nation’s people in the region, a supporting foundation to ‘closing the gap’. Finally, without DSDILGP vision the REESP would not have been possible, to this end we thank the Qld Government & the team at DSDILGP for turning the vision into a plan & we hope ultimately into action. Kane Thorton - your commentary in today’s the Australian on the need for regional planning to support renewable energy transition is spot on. Kane have a look at our Regional Electrcity and Energy Supply Proposal for the gulf Savannah Region - not just stationary electricity but transport too. Half the geography is in the NEM and the other half isn’t, which makes it a great test bed to see what really can work under different geographic and human made conditions and environments (ie like hypothetical constructs called ‘markets’). Maybe you can chat to Darren Miller at ARENA and get some real regional focus into the “energy transition” or is really only for the major east coast urban centres & the NEM?
