We applied machine learning in two different ways in this paper. The first was to build an interatomic potential for the Mo-Nb-Ta-V-W system. The second was to analyze atomistic simulation data to answer this question: which factor –– among lattice distortion (LD), elastic mismatch, short-range order, mixing energy, and binding energy –– most affects the critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) for a single dislocation to glide in refractory multi-principal element alloys (RMPEAs)? The answer is that LD plays a leading role. We also found, among dozens of RMPEAs, that as the LD decreases, the screw-to-edge ratio in CRSS increases. This intuitive result –– because RMPEAs with smaller LD behave more like pure body-centered cubic metals –– has been hypothesized by many but is systematically demonstrated here for the first time to the best of my knowledge. Kudos to my student, Mohamad Yaman Fares, on his second publication on the topic of High Polymer Modified Bitumen (HiPMB). A few weeks ago, the HiPMBs rutting characterization through MSCR tests was published in the Transportation Research Record (https://lnkd.in/dcbtyvdZ). The fatigue cracking characterization through LAS tests is now available in the Journal of Construction and Building Materials (https://lnkd.in/daUPHTbD). In both, Mohamad Yaman Fares linked the performance of the HiPMBs to those of the asphalt mixtures. What I like about his work is that he considered industrial products actually used in the field rather than HiPMBs prepared in a controlled laboratory environment. AM Friends, I have mentioned before that Electron Beam Powder Bed Fusion lends itself well for copper alloys. The electron beam melts copper like butter, without any issues with reflectivity, and the vacuum environment prevents oxygen pickup. See below a new E-PBF study from a Chinese team on a CuCrZr alloy. They print at a powder bed temperature of 473 K (200°C) which is very low compared to E-PBF processes for most other materials. Our latest paper on auxetic truss lattices is out in ASME Journal of Applied Mechanics. You can find the paper here: https://lnkd.in/eG4aP5wm In this paper, we report findings on the compressive behavior of two families of steel auxetic truss lattice architectures, specifically focusing on the elastic properties, peak stresses, Poisson’s ratios, and deformation modes of these architectures. The laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing method is employed concentrating on the anisotropy and spatial variation of the produced parts. This mm study was driven by its adaptability for creating diverse prototypes related to civil infrastructure, such as interpenetrating phase composites of truss lattice-reinforced concrete structural elements (more to come soon...!). A computational validation of the experiments is performed by leveraging material properties obtained through characterization techniques, such as μCT and scanning electrode microscopy (SEM). Our study aims at informing the fundamental mechanics involved in architected materials and architected material composites and enable their upscaling for use in civil infrastructure structural elements and other engineering applications. In this recent paper, Dr. Jay (Wo Jae) Lee and Prof. John Sutherland explore an innovative method for predicting the time to failure (TTF) of rotating machinery through dynamic feature extraction combined with Gaussian process regression. This approach optimizes prognostic accuracy by leveraging historical health indicator values to forecast machinery failures with quantified uncertainty, ensuring more reliable and efficient predictive maintenance strategies in manufacturing plants. Professor Somnath Ghosh is the Michael G. Callas endowed Chair Professor in the Department of Civil & Systems Engineering and Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science & Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. He is the founding director of the JHU Center for Integrated Structure-Materials Modeling and Simulation (CISMMS). He is currently the director of NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration STRI IMQCAM on additive manufacturing and was the director/PI of the Air Force Center of Excellence in Integrated Materials Modeling (CEIMM). His research focuses on multi-scale structure-materials analysis and simulations, multi-physics modeling and simulation of multi-functional materials, materials characterization, process modeling, and emerging fields like Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME). Microstructure and mechanical properties of bulk NiTi shape memory alloy fabricated using directed energy deposition: In our article just published in Additive Manufacturing (Elsevier), we report the fabrication of large NiTi square bars by directed energy deposition (DED) X-ray diffraction detected only the B2 phase in the bottom, center and top sections. A surprising mechanical behavior is reported, for the first time, where the middle section exhibits the lowest Young’s and shear moduli (based on an ultrasonic pulse-echo test) and the highest microhardness. Atom probe tomography (APT) allowed to rationalize the anomalous mechanical behavior based on the formation of a fine dispersion of Ni4Ti3 nanoprecipitates with the highest volume fraction in the middle section. These microstructural and mechanical heterogeneities have both fundamental and practical implications.

In other sector of science, hyperfine field distribution fitting programs are open, see for istance Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific HfS, Hyperfine Structure Fitting Tool Robert Estalella I wonder if the transformation ( a sort of Laplace or Fourier transform I would say where the signal would be convoluted with the sextet above ) of acquired data ( typically in a multichannel with 512 or nowadays 1012 channels I believe) could be in a way not "too much" dependent of the hypothesis one could propose for the function isomer shif=f(hyperfine field). And what about, in case one would use ZULF to have such function directly.
