When we were in the middle of Covid, it became clear that there needed to be more continuity of becoming licensed across states. Each state has their own criteria, and it was never clear as to why this was, especially since the criteria never had anything to do with the geography or population being served. This is definitely an exciting step in the direction that will allow LCSWs to provide services across state lines without having to jump through hoops to do it.

Bullying at Schools Bullying in schools is a pervasive issue that has profound and lasting effects on the mental health of children and adolescents. In New Jersey, statistics reveal the prevalence of bullying and its detrimental impact on young individuals. To effectively address the needs of those affected by bullying, comprehensive mental health counseling services are essential. This article explores the effects of bullying, presents statistics specific to New Jersey, delves into the complexities of cyberbullying, and emphasizes the crucial role of bilingual and trauma-informed mental health counseling in supporting victims and fostering resilience. Bullying encompasses physical, verbal, social, and cyber forms of aggression intended to harm, intimidate, or exert control over others. Victims can result in psychological distress, academic difficulties, social isolation, and even physical health problems. The effects of bullying can extend into adulthood, leading to long-term emotional scars and impairments in functioning. In New Jersey, approximately 15% of students report being bullied on school property, while 10% report experiencing cyberbullying. These statistics underscore the need for proactive measures to address bullying and support those affected by its harmful effects. Bilingual and trauma-informed counseling approaches recognize the complex interplay between bullying experiences and psychological trauma, providing tailored interventions to address the unique needs of each individual. Mental health counseling services for victims of bullying encompass a range of therapeutic modalities aimed at promoting healing, resilience, and empowerment. Counseling sessions may involve cognitive-behavioral techniques to challenge negative thought patterns and build coping skills and supportive counseling to validate feelings and foster self-esteem. Group counseling and peer support initiatives create safe spaces for victims to share experiences, gain validation, and develop supportive relationships. I'm intrigued by the this decision to shutter this program. NH Medicaid rates for psychotherapy services saw an increase of over 45% this year. Community Mental Health Centers have the option to utilize a modifier that grants them an even higher rate, surpassing rates from all private payors like Anthem or Optum. While I acknowledge the challenges related to Medicaid revalidation and individuals losing insurance coverage, the significant reimbursement increase followed by program closure raises questions. Mental Health Centers are supposed to bill an uninsured fund for uncovered services, highlighting the complexity of the situation. It appears that the issues might be linked more to the performance and quality of counseling services rather than solely reimbursement concerns. Understanding factors such as appointment frequency, clinician stability, and client retention across the client base could provide valuable insights, often times the mental health centers don't share this information and just keep their pitch solely on needing more funding. A wiser decision would have been to subcontract the services out to another provider for clients who have health insurance rather than clients losing care. The center then could retain the uninsured and complex SPMI clients, which is their ultimate mission. This would shift fringe cost away from the center, cut cost, and reduce the adminstive burden.
