*** CALLING ARTIST & AUTHORS*** The Shades of Blue Project's Black Maternal Mental Health Week awareness campaign, scheduled for July 19-25, is focused on elevating the conversation around Black Maternal Mental Health and providing a platform for artists and Black book writers to share their interpretations and experiences of Motherhood. The "Art of Motherhood" showcase will happen during this year's INSPIRE Brunch, Angel Awards, as well as the Black Maternal Mental Health Summit and Art Showcase Happy Hour event. These are key components of our awareness campaign this year. Call to Action for Artists and Authors: We are looking for talented artists and writers of color to join us in shedding light on the multifaceted experiences of Black motherhood. Whether your medium is painting, sculpture, literature, or any other form of artistic expression, we believe your work can inspire, educate, and evoke meaningful conversations around the themes of maternal mental health, resilience, and community support. Participation Details: Who Can Participate: We welcome submissions from artists and writers of all backgrounds who are passionate about the theme of Black maternal mental health. We are especially interested in featuring Black artists and authors to bring authenticity and depth to the conversation. Submission Guidelines: Please submit high-resolution images of your artwork or abstracts of your literary works, along with a brief description of how your work relates to the themes of motherhood and mental health. Include your name, contact information, and a short bio. Deadline for Submissions: All entries must be received by May 5, 2024 ensuring ample time before the events for selection and organization. Across the country, Black women play a vital role in every field, from business to the arts to activism. Yet, Black women are earning only 69 cents to the dollar for full-time, year-round work compared to non-Hispanic white men nationwide. In PA, it's even less at 60 cents. This is no accident. Systemic discrimination and exploitation based on race, class, and gender created and continue to fuel these pay gaps. Every woman deserves equal pay, recognition, and opportunity. Preserving Black cultural heritage and spaces is a compelling project of recovering an inheritance of perseverance and creativity. By locating, maintaining, and sharing the stories of Black families and communities, we rediscover the meaning of kinship, social justice, and political innovation. In the face of a history of racism and prejudice that has undermined Black intergenerational wealth, could Black cultural heritage provide a way for us to also recognize and value Black intergenerational worth?

Absolutely. What I would say is take a look at the LinkedIn page for Disability:IN so that you understand who's coming. And then if there is a company that maybe you're not familiar with, take a look at what their roles are and have those questions queued up. So take a look at the companies and then really, really take a look at what you're looking for. You want to be certain that you are aligning yourself and your experience and your profile with the right roles. One way that you do set yourself apart is to align yourself appropriately. And so when someone does see your resume or CV, wherever you are in the world, and they see that it aligns with the role, they can highlight that and come prepared to hear everyone. You have no idea. You have no idea what you'll learn. So I would absolutely say, you know, think about yourself and where you want to be. But then also what experience do you have align with the companies that you know are coming and come with questions and be ready to engage. Be ready to listen so that you can get the most of the event.

Nationally, Black women working full time make only 69¢ for every dollar a white man makes. According to BWWC's 2023 Gender and Racial Wage Gap data, Black women in Greater Boston earn just 48¢ for every dollar white men earn. This pay gap goes beyond income: today it affects Black women's access to healthcare, education, and housing among other things, consequently impacting their ability to accumulate wealth in the future.
