Really great article on microcredentials, which is a big part of my new role. While working with faculty to create well developed microcredentials that brings in their expertise and knowledge is essential, it’s also absolutely imperative that is combined with what employers and the labor market is seeking in skill development. Who is next? Montessori is a curriculum with viable outcomes. Every state should be mirroring this study. Especially those with publicly funded Montessori schools. The Interstate Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (InTASC) Standards, developed by the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), aim to promote and support effective teaching practices. These standards outline what #teachers across all content and grade levels should know and be able to do to ensure they are effective in today's diverse #learning environments. The InTASC Standards are organized into ten core standards that cover various aspects of #teaching: Learner Development: Understanding how #students grow and develop to create appropriate learning experiences. I really like this idea of creating an “assessment culture.” Students and teachers should feel comfortable collaborating on the process of monitoring learning, evaluating progress, and agreeing on actionable instructional goals. This would help create a feeling of agency over one’s learning (and teaching) and help develop the important growth mindset. An assessment culture would help integrate the critical information that formative and summative tests can provide in a more explicit and positive way. Districts are working hard to help new teachers unlearn outdated reading research taught in their educator prep programs. This unlearning is expensive for districts. I know of a school system that's paying close to $100K next year to train educators in content they should've received in their ed prep programs. This unlearning is expensive for educators, who accrue debt to get certified through educator prep programs. In their first years on the job, new educators often spend more time in professional development to unlearn things they paid to learn. Instead, they could spend those hours fostering relationships, preparing their classroom environments, or internalizing curricula and assessments. So, when an ed prep program's syllabi fails to meet CA's new standards for preparing reading teachers, and the state approves its provisional accreditation anyway, students, educators, and districts pay the price. They deserve better.

Embodied and Generative Learning: Igniting Motivation and Engagement in Ourselves and Others The Center for Excellence in Transformative Teaching and Learning (CETTL) will host national workshop facilitator, Dr. Melissa Peet, Director of the Generative Knowledge Institute, for a full certification workshop retreat on Embodied and Generative Learning: Igniting Motivation and Engagement in Ourselves and Others. Are you struggling with feeling exhausted or burned out? Do you often feel like there is never enough time to do everything you need to do? Do you notice that other people - your family, friends and co-workers - also seem to lack focus and direction? Have you struggled to get your students engaged in the classroom? Would you like to know why these things are happening and how to change them? If so, this workshop is for you. In this interactive workshop/training, Dr. Peet will share several methods developed through her research at the Univ. of Michigan shown to increase peoples’ natural capacity to learn, engage, and connect to their innate sense of purpose, focus and direction. Dr. Peet’s research shows how we become more connected, engaged, and motivated simply by making a series of small and intentional changes in how we speak, move, and interact with others and the world around us. These small changes create significant and lasting shifts in our nervous system, which in turn, allow people to become more motivated and engaged. Workshop participants will go through a series of exercises that will help them communicate in a way that activates the level of the body/nervous system that induces a state of flow and deep curiosity. These exercises will surface hidden sources of motivation, strength and intelligence hidden within participants’ experiences. Dr. Peet will demonstrate how participants can use these tools in their teaching as well as their interactions with students, friends, family members and colleagues. Open to any faculty/staff. ACT Study Highlights "Grade Inflation" Impact on Developmental Course Placement • A new study by ACT found that students entering college between 2019-2021 were more likely to be placed in developmental or remedial courses compared to their peers who entered before 2019, despite having similar GPAs. • This trend is potentially linked to grade inflation during the COVID-19 pandemic, prompting colleges to adjust their interpretation of high school grades. • The study examined data from 40,194 students across 10 institutions in one state, looking at their high school GPAs, ACT scores, and placement in developmental math courses. • While high school GPAs increased from 2017 to 2021, ACT composite scores declined, raising concerns about grade inflation. • Students with lower GPAs were more likely to be placed in developmental courses compared to peers with the same ACT scores but higher GPAs, suggesting colleges interpreted higher GPAs as indicators of increased college readiness. • The study recommends colleges adopt a holistic, multi-measure approach for placing students in developmental courses, rather than relying solely on GPA or test scores, aligning with best practices for equitable and effective education. • Using multiple measures like GPA and ACT scores together had less variation in developmental course placement over time compared to using a single measure. #GradeInflation #DevelopmentalCourses #RemedialEducation #CollegeReadiness #ACTStudy #HigherEducation #EquityInEducation #MultipleMeasures #COVID19Education

The Science of Reading is hot 🔥 right now. Super simplified explanation: Two approaches have been battling for dominance in public schools, Whole Language and Phonics. Whole Language focuses on rote memorization of words and Phonics breaks down the sounds. (Phonics is just one key part of the Science of Reading, but it is a differentiator.) Whole Language dominated for years, but results have caused concern. In 2022, 37% of 4th graders tested below basic on NAEP testing(nation's report card). Mississippi is one state that has chosen to move away from Whole Language with impressive results. They went from being ranked the second worst state in the country for 4th grade reading in 2013 to a rocket rise of 21st in the country in 2022. Many districts and states are making moves towards incorporating Science of Reading curriculum on different levels of intensity. A total of 38 states have now passed laws or policies about changing reading instruction. The problem is that many schools are trying to fit in the Science of Reading for supplemental support, helping students who have fallen behind instead of incorporating the training and curriculum into all of their core classes. Hoping that giving students a strong foundation in their early years can lead to more life long lovers of reading nationwide. 📚 #reading #literacy

Each year, the CCCAOE board gathers for its Board Retreat to strategize and plan for the next year. This year, we added a campus tour to our 3 days of work. This tour was at San Diego City College. We are energized by the fantastic hosts and guides, including Sasha Knox, Ed.D, Associate Dean of Strong Workforce and Career Education, who gave the board a comprehensive tour of many CTE programs and facilities. It was a great reminder of why we do this work. Orange County Region, we are coming to you in January 2025.   WHY THIS WORK MATTERS   As each college strives to meet workforce needs in the ever-changing landscape of education, CCCAOE brings stakeholders together to share best practices and advocate for excellence in career education throughout the state.
