I am thrilled to share our shared research work entitled " Evaluating groundwater storage variations in Afghanistan using GRACE, GLDAS, and in‑situ measurements " published in the Journal of " Modeling Earth Systems and Environment". The findings indicate a significant decline in groundwater storage across the region, peaking in February 2005 (exceeding 10 cm) and reaching its lowest point in January 2017 (more than -15 cm). The most affected areas are the Harirud-Murghab, Helmand, and Kabul Basins, with a total change of approximately 116 mm. The northern part of the Helmand River Basin (HRB) remains relatively unaffected. Various factors contribute to changes in groundwater storage, including reduced precipitation in the Harirud-Murghab Basin, climate change, and geological conditions. It is exhilarating and honored to be informed that our published paper entitled Implementing and Assessing the Performance Evaluation Methodology of Urban Street Facilities for Motorized Vehicles in the Highway Capacity Manual Using Vehicle Trajectory Data was selected as the Editor's choice for the current issue of ASCE Publishing Journal of Transportation Engineering, Part A: Systems. This research is focused on utilizing vehicle trajectory data as an alternative tool to facilitate the use of performance evaluation methodology of urban street facilities in the HCM and providing recommendations of use for the existing HCM approach. 🔑 Key takeaways: 1. Vehicle trajectory data can be utilized as an alternative tool to implement the existing performance evaluation methodology of urban street facilities for motorized vehicles in the HCM 7th Edition. 2. It is recommended to combine arterial through-vehicle trajectories, time-space diagram, arterial LOS, and poorest segment LOS for arterial operational performance evaluation and further enhancement. 3. It is found that the proposed automobile traveler perception score (ATPS) in the HCM is insensitive to reflecting traveler’s perception of service quality. **Importance of integrating the Grey, Green, and Blue infrastructure in cities** In Pakistan's urban areas, the need to address climate change impacts makes integrating blue, green, and grey infrastructure more critical. Combining blue infrastructure, such as rivers, lakes, wetlands, and stormwater management systems, with green infrastructure, like parks, green roofs, street trees, urban forests, and community gardens, alongside grey infrastructure such as roads, bridges, buildings, and sewers, creates a cohesive urban ecosystem. This integration could involve using green roofs and permeable pavements to absorb rainwater, implementing sustainable drainage systems, and designing multi-functional spaces for recreation and flood management. This integration offers numerous benefits, such as mitigating the urban heat island effect, enhancing biodiversity, improving air and water quality, managing excess rainwater, and reducing flood risks. 📡🌍 Excited to share our recent discovery on drought mapping in Nepal using the GLDAS 2.1 satellite product! We utilized high-resolution soil moisture data (0.25° x 0.25°) extracted from Google Earth Engine to monitor and assess drought conditions. By calculating the Soil Water Deficit Index (SWDI), we were able to determine drought severity across the region. This approach provides crucial information for farmers, policymakers, and disaster management authorities, aiding in the allocation of resources and implementation of drought mitigation strategies. Additionally, it supports sustainable agricultural practices by informing irrigation and crop planning. Subject Matter Experts in Earthquake Engineering Wikipedia states “a subject-matter expert (SME) is a person who has accumulated great knowledge in a particular field or topic and this level of knowledge is demonstrated by the person's degree, licensure, and/or through years of professional experience with the subject.” Also “in engineering and technical fields, a SME is the one who is an authority in the design concept, calculations and performance of a system or process.” In matters of Earthquake Engineering, there are 0 SMEs in the Executive, Legislative and Judicial branches of government. They are missing as well from all PR government agencies and departments. Why are Puerto Ricos’s SMEs in the Earthquake Commission ignored? Is ChatGPT being used as a replacement for a living SME? Governor Rafael Hernández Colon on June 23, 1988 in Boletín Administrativo # 5126ª, established la Comisión Sobre Seguridad Contra Terremotos. It endured until it was replaced by Boletin Administrativo # QE-1994-01, signed by Governor Pedro Rosello on January 10, 1994, which established El Consejo Consultivo de Seguridad Contra Terremotos. That disappeared as well, apparently from conflicts of interest between some members of the Consejo. I think PR has wasted many years by not recognizing the importance of seeking out and paying attention to the advice of legitimate Earthquake Engineering SMEs.

A Training Program on the Application of ‘MIKE OPERATIONS WEB’ for National Flood Forecasting System for Bangladesh which is conducted by DHI A/S, Denmark. Owing to climate change, flood occurrence and impact are increasing globally. Water managers need tools that help them forecast and manage floods in a robust and timely manner. Decision Support Systems integrating historical data, gauging stations, weather forecast, and calibrated hydraulic and hydrological models are key to obtain early information in potential floods and to plan optimal responses to floods. Activities of MIKE OPERATION involved real-time data processing, model integration and operationalization as well as python programming. MIKE Operations Web is the web user interface (web UI) of MIKE Workbench and is designed for the daily operations of monitoring observed and forecasted data, monitoring the operational system and dissemination of results to relevant stakeholders.

Our recent paper got finally published in the Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board. We've been assessing the likely effect of upcoming changes in the freight industry (electrification) on pavement responses, focusing on understanding how higher horizontal demands and axle weight distribution might lead to an increase in deterioration as pavement condition worsens. This is one of the first articles in this series from our research group, greatly built upon the outstanding work former colleagues have conducted at the Illinois Center for Transportation. Prof. Imad L. Al-Qadi is leading a significant effort to advance pavement science as imminent changes are on its way.
