Here's how you can enhance employee satisfaction and retention in healthcare organizations.
Equal pay based on merit ensures employees are rewarded for their performance, driving productivity and satisfaction as efforts are directly linked to compensation. Traditional annual merit cycles often fail to keep pace with COLA, leaving employees feeling undervalued. Policies favoring high-performing tenured employees, like targeted bonuses and accelerated promotion tracks, acknowledge sustained contributions and institutional knowledge. This balance creates a fair, dynamic system, bridging the gap left by rigid cycles. Combining merit-based pay with support for tenured employees ensures both performance and loyalty are rewarded, fostering a productive and harmonious workplace.

Here's how you can future-proof your healthcare career.
A sustainable healthcare career hinges on personal well-being, encompassing work/life integration. This balance harmonizes professional duties and personal interests, crucial for health, job satisfaction, and resilience. Recharging with family, friends, and hobbies is necessary to reduce stress, rejuvenate the mind, and enhance mental health. Research shows strong social connections improve happiness and longevity, helping manage job demands. Quality time with loved ones offers emotional support and mental resilience. Hobbies prevent burnout, promoting well-being. Incorporating these elements ensures stamina for professional challenges, enriching both work and personal life.

Here's how you can cultivate psychological safety in a collaborative team.
Creating psychological safety at work is crucial for ensuring all voices are heard and valued. The Aristotle Project at Google found that psychological safety is the most important factor in building successful teams. Encourage open communication, actively listen, and support each other without judgment. This not only fosters innovation and creativity but also strengthens team cohesion and productivity. By making everyone feel safe to share their ideas and concerns, we create a more inclusive and effective workplace where everyone can thrive.

Here's how you can increase your chances of getting promoted by gaining visibility within your organization.
I have long been a fan of taking less visible opportunities that can often have the greatest impact on your career and personal growth. Although these roles are not in the spotlight, they provide unique opportunities to learn and develop skills that are crucial for long-term success. When you step into these positions, you demonstrate your initiative and commitment, which can signal to your superiors that you are ready for more significant responsibilities. Engaging in these behind-the-scenes volunteer projects allows you to collaborate with executives and mentors, offering you insights and guidance that might not be accessible in your regular role and are invaluable for personal and professional development.

Sarah vowed to herself that, when she reached a certain age, she would establish a scholarship at SRHS. She has a strong interest in annually assisting a graduating senior female who exhibits leadership qualities and will pursue a four year degree. Other criteria for the award include involvement in cheerleading and/or student government programs and financial need.
The Foundation salutes Life Member Sarah Richardson ’92 for again taking a leadership role herself and giving back to SRHS for which she has a “deep-rooted affinity.” “Once a Panther, Always a Panther.” -

When she was a child, the parents of Sarah Richardson could have sworn she would end up as a prosecuting attorney. The 39-year-old CIO at HCA MidAmerica Division in Kansas City, Mo., says her mom and dad made the assumption because “I questioned everything and always had to debate everything.”
Although Richardson’s career trajectory landed her in the healthcare realm instead of the legal industry, she’s quick to point out that the prosecutorial attributes she displayed as a young girl overlap with the skillset she employs to increase efficiencies, improve processes and deliver higher quality for patients, practitioners and staff throughout the HCA MidAmerica Division.
Equipped with an MBA, Richardson brings an IT background to her current position and has taken on roles throughout her career that demonstrate an aptitude for making organizations work better. This particular skill came in handy when Richardson headed up efforts to merge “culturally contrasting divisions,” according to her Rising Stars nomination.
Throughout the 18-month process, Richardson is credited with creating cultural alignment, a reduction of technological complexities and the establishment of best practice standards and project governance. Her abilities are superseded only by her positive attitude towards her colleagues. “It’s always about paying it forward,” Richardson says. “You have to find ways to give back.”

The results were as follows:
The most constrained resource (bottleneck) in a physician office or clinic is the physician; The single largest increase in demand on the physician with an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) is the time required to retrieve the patient’s record and record orders, such as lab, pharmacy or x-ray, and to record physician notes. Historically, some physicians wrote their notes on paper charts. Others dictated or had them typed and filed in the patient’s record. Most EMRs require that the provider enter patient visit data directly into the computer. Although physicians were supplied with mobile devices such as laptops or tablets, even the most keyboard proficient physicians speak 10 times faster than they type. Almost all traditional processes to alleviate the aforementioned issues require extra staff, freeing the physician but creating greater expense and increasing the turnaround time for the availability of the documentation or compromise the patient’s privacy or both. While not new, voice recognition software has only recently become sophisticated enough and inexpensive enough for general and individual use. By developing interfaces to physician office systems, the voice recognition programs allowed the physician to save the data in the EMR in a usable and ACA compliant form. HCA facilitated the purchase of voice recognition software, assisted in the installation of this software, trained the physicians, and monitored the success. It is worthy of note not all physicians embraced this software. Speech and work flow patterns or simple preference influenced a physician’s choice. ITs position is that the decision is the doctor’s. A tool chest has many tools and the worker uses the one that is right for her/him to succeed.

Two years ago under the overarching ARRA, the Federal Government proposed a number of sweeping changes to the Health Care industry called “The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act“. HITECH, as it is called, is the government mandate for healthcare providers to the purchase, install, implement and “Meaningfully Use” an Electronic Health Record (EHR). The time frame for this work is 5+ years. The impact is huge for the industry for it affects the way patient information is collected, stored and shared.
Under the leadership of Steve Corbeil and with encouragement from corporate HCA, the Midwest Division carefully examined the 19 points of Stage 1 in the Meaningful Use of EHR and determined that many positive effects could be realized including better communication with the physician community, better and more useful information supplied to regulatory entities, and improved patient outcomes. With all of this in mind, Mr. Corbeil decided to be an early adopter of Stage 1.
Examples Include:
• The Midwest Division hospitals are capable of supplying lab results and vaccination information to the states;
• The Midwest Division stores many significant pieces of demographic and clinical information in a standard, digital format so that sharing with disparate facilities or physician offices is possible;
• The Midwest Division encodes allergies and take home medications as part of the patient assessments, reducing incidental interactions or otherwise unpredictable results and assuring that patients have the correct and appropriate medications when they are dismissed;
• Finally, the Midwest Division can and will supply, electronically, patient discharge instructions and the patient medical record. This gives the patient the option of having their information in computer readable format including protected e-mail thereby reducing lost paper and allowing convenient storage of this information for future reference.
