If you don't subscribe, then you are missing out on great content! Eleanor Hawkins delivers every time! My BIG takeaway from the current installment has to do with this stat: "An MIT study found false news online reaches people about six times faster than the truth, yet 28% of businesses don't have a formal mis-disinformation response plan in place and 23% have no plan." At the very least, businesses need a single source of publicly-facing truth space online. I see so many businesses that do not have this space (and no, it is not your consumer-facing blog), so the stat is not shocking at all. This is a communication malpractice. Reach out and let's fix it.

Us Comms folks are wired to navigate tricky situations. MacGyver was my favorite show growing up. ‘Mac’ had a knack for solving problems and extensive scientific knowledge.  → He could unlock a vault with a paperclip and some bubble gum. Comms doesn’t always have all the resources, either. But we know how to play the hand we're dealt. - Assess the situation  - Explore options  - Make it work Being great at Comms requires us all to be MacGyvers. → A mix of expertise, experience and resourcefulness. We're strategic. We're scrappy. We're problem solvers.

In case nobody has noticed, 🤣we live in a complicated, matrixed, relationship-based world, and as communicators we are often called to help make sense of it, first to us, and the to the audiences that we care about. A key point is that we nearly always are dealing with multiple audiences, which means that amidst all this complexity we have to make sure our messages can resonate with different groups and cultures. The best way I've found to do this is not to come up with different messages for different audiences. First, this is way too complex, and adding complexity to complexity is rarely the path to simplicity. Second, saying different things to different groups is a recipe for distrust to breed, for example if we make one point to our employees and a different point to investors, which is true? Instead, focus first on the core messages. Don't get distracted by tactics just yet -- get the messages down and agreed to. Then, and only then, think about how to effectively translate them to most effectively land. Really internalizing this need for simplicity is one of the things that gives us communication professionals the power to advocate for clarity. If we don’t understand the product details, the program specifics, then all audiences will also struggle with the story.

My benchmark for success on executive quotes in PRs? Did Reuters use it? Every week I see quick Reuters coverage posts related to stories sent across the PRN network. And no other media outlet, in my view, uses a company quote so well -- never the full quote, never a piece of content the coverage hangs on necessarily; and the company PR is never the only source Reuters uses to create their content. But they do often use relevant, and again concise, company quotes. A brand who did it well in May was Dotdash Meredith on May 7: https://lnkd.in/gJKYDQZy. Reuters took the first part of the initial quote from Mr. Vogel, and used it as their fourth graph (always using excellent short paragraph formatting): https://lnkd.in/gDU8e2TH Ready to learn more about what journalists need, what their engagement preferences are -- a nice refresher even for seasoned PR/IR/marketing pros?
