What do you do if you're a social media professional trying to spot and capitalize on emerging trends?
It's great to stay on top of trends, but I also think it's important to ask yourself WHY you're looking to capitalize on these moments. Authenticity is key, so not all trends will be right for you. Ask yourself: Is it on brand for your social media presence? Will it look out of place? Could it backfire? Should it be modified in some way for your audience? Is the investment it takes going to be worth the effort? Experimentation is great -- listen to the data and what your audience is telling you. But don't feel pressured to do something because everyone else is, that may be just the thing to set you and your brand apart!

You’re about to interview for your dream job. How can you use social media to prepare?
There's certainly a fine line between coming off as creepy vs. well-researched, but I'd say it's a must these days to research your interview panel. If you're working in a smaller industry, there's bound to be some sort of common ground or mutual connection to help break the ice. Those personal notes can A) make you look prepared (show that you spent more than 30 second glossing over the company website before the call) and B) help you stick out in the mind of your interviewer, especially if they're talking to many candidates that blur together. There's also a good chance your interviewer is sharing more details about the work they do (at least on LinkedIn 😊) which could also be another great feather in your cap for a dream job convo.

What do you do if you need to unplug from social media and recharge?
Setting boundaries for a social media cleanse can be really tricky, especially when you've incorporated checking them as a part of your daily routine. All the screen time settings and apps haven't worked for me, as it's easy to "snooze" them or get around them. The only thing that has worked for me is physical separation -- either fully deleting an app from my phone or putting my phone in another room. You have to make it difficult for you to use it or create some checks that will stop you from just giving in to your usual habits. Eventually, it will be come easier as to start to lean on it less as a crutch or realize that you're not missing out on as much as you think!

How do you plan your social media content in advance?
I've also found that using a project management tool like Monday, Asana, or Airtable can also be quite helpful when managing a social media account. It can integrate with other editorial projects you're working on and often allow more robust planning tools (and color coding!). There are a lot of useful functions in these tools that I often found were lacking on social media calendars. Project management tools allow for more forward planning or are capable of outside stakeholders submitting pitches or ideas. I always felt more organized when I ran social media accounts with these programs.
