📌Google Keep Product Teardown? As a product manager, my perspective on technology innovations is now shaped by a deep understanding of user needs and product intricacies. Google Keep Notes is one of my most frequently used software, because i'm big on information storage, organization, and on-the-go productivity. Its simplicity and accessibility across devices, providing an “everywhere you go”, and “on any device you own” notepad, make it a valuable tool for enhancing user's daily productivity. Here are qualities that I've identified that make the product stand out and what features would go great as an addition: One of the key strengths of Google Keep is that there’s less distraction, the interface is just like sticky notes. I type my thoughts, maybe add some images and links too and I can sort and rearrange the notes like I would using sticky notes on a board. This simplicity makes it unique. Other great features include the reminder and labeling functionalities that help me maintain task consistency and have been found to also increase both individual and team performance. Identifying areas for enhancement, I see an opportunity to further improve user experience by activating the text formatting feature on iOS, aligning it with the functionality available on Android. Enabling users to highlight, bold, underline, italicize, and change text heading styles enhances versatility and consistency across platforms, fostering user loyalty to the Google ecosystem. Additionally, introducing a "date created" feature prominently displayed at the top of notes, similar to how labels are positioned at the bottom, offers significant benefits. Users can effortlessly track when they added a note or task, facilitating better prioritization of tasks based on chronological order. It also serves as a historical reference point, enabling users to review past activities, track progress over time, and reflect on achievements or milestones. By incorporating features that enhance organization, milestone tracking, and time management while appealing to users emotionally through the dating of notes, Google Keep can evolve into the ultimate on-the-go productivity tool for individuals and teams. This strategic approach not only elevates user satisfaction but it also gives Google Keep a better competitive edge in the crowded productivity tools market. How to escape the dreaded catch-22, of needing product management experience to apply for even an internship (!) or an entry-level product role? Work your way from within! Many roles can lead to product management. Here are 7, and what you should try to do in each to hone your skills and get noticed: 1. QA (that’s where I got my break): Speak up if you see during testing something that would negatively affect user experience, even if it meets the acceptance criteria. Good product leaders will value your proactivity and your advocacy for the customers. 2. Sales Executive: Probe customers and prospects to understand their underlying needs, then present the product team with problems to solve rather than a wishlist of features. You will win their hearts. 3. Business Analyst: Use data insights to recommend strategic changes and present these ideas to product leadership and stakeholders. Be the PM‘s right hand when it comes to defining success and measuring impact, and they will be in your corner when a slot opens up in their team. 4. Customer Support: Keep track of common user issues and suggest product improvements to bridge the gap. Demonstrate understanding of the product strategy and impacted segments when prioritizing which issues to flag. 5. Marketing Manager: Keep your eye on the competition and frequently share what you see with the product team. Propose new product features or adjustments based on market trends during marketing strategy discussions. 6. Customer Success Manager: Use your deep understanding of customer journeys to advocate for user-centric product changes, and present case studies on customer success stories to influence product strategy. 7.UX Researcher/UX Designer: Expand beyond the scope of assuring usability of a product/feature, and ask questions about the value and viability too. Show that you are concerned about the business as well as the customers. Doing the above will not only make you the product team‘s favorite person, it will also help you stand out in the organization. Be vocal about your aspirations, even with your direct manager, and find allies within your company to help you grow and make sure you're on the radar when opportunities open up. I am shocked at how few product people (PM, UX, UXR..) know how to apply the Jobs To Be Done (JTBD) framework to their work. The JTBD framework is built around a simple but transformative idea that customers fundamentally hire products and services to perform specific jobs. These 'jobs' can be functional - like cutting a piece of wood, emotional - such as feeling secure, or social - like gaining status among peers. The key to innovation, isn’t just improving products but deeply understanding and addressing the specific jobs customers need to complete and what gets in the way of them completing these jobs. If you are working on a product team, then take the time to understand this framework and you will radically improve your product sense. Throughout my life, I've always held a deep-seated belief in the power of continuous learning. A Decade at Amazon - Reflections After a 10-year journey at Amazon, I recently transitioned from a yellow badge to the red corporate employee badge. While there is room for improvement at Amazon, I'm struck by how much I've learned and grown, thanks to Amazon's culture and leaders. In my last 10 years, I've had the opportunity to work across different organizations in stores, AWS, and Alexa as an individual contributor and as a manager in technical program management and engineering disciplines. Some of the most profound lessons that will stick with me include: 1. Following leadership principles unifies a company's culture and boosts productivity. 2. The importance of deep understanding, practice, and insisting on the highest standards. 3. Driving outcomes over empires and being strategically patient yet tactically impatient in pursuing customer obsession. 4. Having an insatiable curiosity and beginner's mindset. 5. Every customer issue represents an upstream process deficiency that needs to be identified and resolved urgently. 6. Prioritizing and tackling the hottest, highest impact items first. 7. Being "green-lighted" doesn't mean risk-free, and transparently calling out risks with projected issue dates. 8. Prioritizing input goals you can control before output goals, and optimizing inputs relentlessly. 9. Goals are directional, not dogmatic, and undershooting or overshooting can be acceptable if customers are delighted. 10. While off-the-shelf solutions can cover 80%, investing in tailored solutions for the remaining 20% is critical. 11. Simplicity, incremental progress, and smart automation are core philosophies. 12. Transparency in prioritization rationale and openness to adjusting the roadmap based on new inputs. 13. Sticking to your strongest points persuades better than attempting to discuss everything. 14. Removing blockers is your responsibility, not someone else's, and committing 100% once a group decision is made. 15. Embracing failures as learning opportunities in complex operations. This enriching decade has been about customer obsession, frugality, ownership, never stopping learning, highest standards, and delivering robust solutions. I'm grateful for the growth I've experienced here.

Love this snippet from Lenny's Newsletter: Three traits that make you a great PM to work with: 1. Raise difficult issues without being difficult to work with 2. Bring up important topics without drawing importance to yourself 3. Remember that you are in charge of getting decisions made, not making the decisions yourself Early on when I was an IC PM, I focused on blocking as many things as possible for my team, do as to be a good PM in helping the team retain focus. Over time, I realised “without being difficult to work with” is an very important skill - much more so when one needs to gain influence in an organisation. Much like how PMs are expected to have empathy for their users, PMs should also have empathy for their stakeholders in any decision. Examples: 1. If u want to block a request, is there a reasonable alternative to the other party in fulfilling their needs? Or some guidance as to when their request could ever be done? 2. If you’re removing a current feature cos of lack of significant usage, how can the existing users be served in alternate ways, or be convinced that this “extra convenience derived” is actually not that much even if taken away? Thinking this from your stakeholders’ angle will help one go a long way in “not being difficult to work with”!

Yesterday Deepinder Goyal announced a "cool new update," and the tech community, especially Product Managers showed mixed reactions. Many asked, "What are you solving for the end user?" while others comments were like, "Here’s my theory on why you did this and what else you should focus on." (Check out the comments on that post) This highlights a shift in tech culture: everything must solve a problem or drive metrics. But sometimes, a feature is just about having fun. I don't think any PM in Zomato would be sitting and tracking the impact created by this feature. PMs often focus on data, outcomes and metrics, forgetting that innovation can be playful. It’s not always about dashboards and growth. Occasionally, it's about creating something delightful just because it’s cool. Let’s not lose sight of that joy. 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐬 𝐬𝐨 𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐜. 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐈 𝐚𝐬𝐤 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐫 𝐧𝐨𝐭? When facing a new problem, I some times have this mental pressure of whether to ask seemingly basic questions. While they may appear fundamental to me, I hesitate, fearing they might be perceived as too elementary by others who possess more knowledge. In 70% of instances, these questions are comfortably addressed by someone in the group allowing us to progress with our discussion seamlessly. However, in the remaining 30%, it's intriguing to witness that none of the participants are familiar with the answer. It’s so fascinating to observe that everyone expected everyone else to know the answer yet no-one knew it and no body asked the basic question to verify. Each time something like this happens with me, I find myself gaining a bit more mental confidence to ask: "𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘴𝘦𝘦𝘮𝘴 𝘴𝘰 𝘣𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘤. 𝘚𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘐 𝘢𝘴𝘬?"
