Got an opportunity to work and interact with physically and mentally challenged kids, though I prefer calling them Special Kids, for they perceive the world in a unique way, entirely different than we do. An organisation called Cottolengo Special School for Mentally Challenged kids, houses children ranging from 5 year old to those who have been entirely brought up there and are nearly 50 now. An organisation called Cottolengo Special School for Mentally Challenged kids, houses children ranging from 5 year old to those who have been entirely brought up there and are nearly 50 now. They make and distribute paper bags and candles as their source of income apart from the external funding. It was an equally unique experience working with them to make paper bags to boost their productivity, as each and every individual there.

Securing employment and housing are key aspects of pursuing independent living. As these activities are increasingly practiced online, web accessibility of related services becomes critical for a successful major life transition. Support for this transition is especially important for people with autism or intellectual disability, who often face issues of underemployment and social isolation. In this study, we conducted semi-structured interviews and contextual inquiries with neurotypical adults and adults with autism or intellectual disability to understand common and unique goals, strategies, and challenges of neurodiverse adults when searching for employment and housing resources online. Our findings revealed that current interfaces adequately support practical (e.g., finance) goals but lack information on social (e.g., inclusivity) goals. Furthermore, unexpected search results and inaccessible social and contextual information diminished search experiences for neurodivergent users, which suggests the need for predictability and structured guidance in searching online. We conclude with design suggestions to make neurodivergent users' online search experience an opportunity to demonstrate their independence.

  • Biomedical signal compression using Discrete Anamorphic Stretch Transform (DAST)

The world today is awash in the digital signal captured by sensors and stored in computer databases. Addressing big data is a challenging and time demanding task that requires a large computational infrastructure to ensure successful data processing and analysis. To deal with the exponential increase in digital data, new compression technology is needed for more efficient representation of information. Such a need arises in scientific research and the field of medicine where large number of real time measurements must be made in order to find statistically rare but important information. In this project, we introduced a physics-based transform that enables signal compression by increasing the signal coherency. We also presented a complete analysis of the same on both 2 dimensional as well as 2 dimensional real time data. The proposed solution facilitated in sending signal with a much higher compression ratio as achieved till date while still maintaining a desired Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR).
