The opioid crisis was a sad hallmark of my years working for the Baker Administration. In a time of extreme partisanship at the federal level, this was one area where public policy, civil discourse, and private enterprise seemed aligned and sufficiently motivated to find a solution. What we learned, however, is that dollars and access only go so far in combatting a disease that knows no so specific demographic. Instead, it's apparent that a battery of tools is needed to combat and prevent addiction--ranging from strong safety nets, to novel non-addictive pain therapies, and better technology. Introducing Marigold Health. Shrenik Jain, Ravi Shah, Tracey Cohen, MD, FASAM and team have built a proprietary NLP-based platform that--most significantly--improves the lives of those suffering from SUD/SMI. One customer we spoke with noted, "We needed a unique treatment intervention that had supportive research, fit into a CMS established model with a recognized service code, and that would provide positive clinical outcomes in an efficacious and fiscally responsible manner”. Another plainly said: "Marigold is our best hope to reach into the lives and help those who many have already given up on." Ply Health (YC S24) helps behavioral health providers get in network with insurance companies faster by using AI to automate and monitor submissions. Providers simply input their information into Ply once, and with a couple of clicks, can apply to join any of the ~1,400 US insurance company networks. The process to join each insurance company’s network is highly manual and fragmented. On top of that, forms that aren't filled out properly cause significant delays, which in turn costs practices tens of thousands of dollars of missed revenue. Ply’s platform solves for speed and accuracy of enrollment submissions using a combination of automation and an experienced ops team as humans-in-the-loop. Samantha Wu and David Zhang founded Ply Health because of Sam's first-hand experience with the contracting and credentialing process while running BizOps for health-tech startup Finni. With Ply, behavioral health providers get into the network so they can start seeing patients ASAP. Congrats Sam and David on the launch!

What Angel Investors Are Saying About Our Startup Ecosystem Yesterday, I led a breakfast meeting with leading angel investors hosted by ACG New Jersey and Robert Johnson. Here are some takeaways from our discussion. New Jersey has: 1. Tremendous Untapped Potential and Enthusiasm The growth I’ve seen just in the past few years has been breathtaking to witness. We've never seen so many New Jersey entrepreneurs making an impact on science and technology, and that pace of progress shows no sign of slowing down. 2. The most talked about AI x Medical startup: Adbridge, is working to rescue doctors from the never-ending admin grind (which causes burnout and less patient face-time). Abridge's AI listens to patient visits and generates precise medical notes, slashing the clerical workload. Now, doctors can focus on what truly matters: patient care. Major health systems like Yale and Emory are already on board and raving, calling it "life-changing" and "magical." 🔷 A big reason --> Payback of the scribe tool is easy to measure. It supports 14 languages including Haitian Creole, Brazilian Portuguese, and Punjabi. An ongoing criticism of generative AI is that it still has few substantive business applications. This seems to quash that. Question: is a dedicated medical LLM needed to be successful in the space? Or will the huge foundational models (GPT-4o, Google, and Meta) ingest a plethora of medical notes and kill the competition with performance? We're dealing with a fast and furious pace, and today's edge may not be relevant tomorrow. Competitors include Microsoft-owned Nuance Healthcare , Ambience Healthcare, Nabla and Suki. Another large funding round in the virtual behavioral health space. It's interesting to note Talkiatry's focus on a physician-centric care model with W-2 providers, as opposed to most of the other players who are delivering care with 1099 mid-level therapists. However, it's still not clear to me how they are measuring care quality and outcomes, which is the foundation of true value-based care.
