Interesting piece from Marc Andreessen on how startups are not getting the regulatory support they need to sustain America's technological leadership. "Regulatory agencies have been green lit to use brute force investigations, prosecutions, intimidation, and threats to hobble new industries, such as Blockchain. Regulatory agencies are being green lit in real time to do the same to Artificial Intelligence." While many investors themselves (both in the US and Europe) are worried how AI will change our lives, our jobs and social interactions, the top VC opinion leader thinks regulation is already too restrictive. #techstartups #techleadership #strategicgrowth

Congrats to Mairon Sandoval, Manuel Cangas & Team OCN (onecarnow.com) on the successful $86M round of funding (debt and equity), Co-Led by Great North Ventures! OCN, provides a car subscription (rental) service for gig workers in Mexico that provides the strongest financing coupled with a myriad of other services to benefit the driver and their riders. They raised $86 million in equity and debt to fund growth in Mexico as well expand internationally. The Series A round for the company was led by Brazil’s Caravela Capital, Collide Capital, and Great North Ventures on the equity side. New York-based i80 Group led the debt portion of the raise. The proceeds of the round will be used to grow the company’s tech infrastructure, hire numerous positions including bolstering executive team, and of course to finance quite a few more cars. Great North Ventures invested in the earlier Seed round and has watched the company grow very quickly over the past 12 mos. The top three ecosystems maintained their same positions from 2020, with Silicon Valley remaining at the top, followed by New York City and London, which are tied for second. This is according to the just-released ranking of cities by Startup Genome in its annual Global Startup Ecosystem Report (https://lnkd.in/g727835s). Tel Aviv moved up one spot in the rankings and tied Los Angeles in the number 4 position. Interestingly enough, Miami jumped 7 spots to the 16th position, while the two leading Chinese cities, Beijing (8th) and Shanghai (11th), both slid. #startups #techrankings #israeltech #startupnation #techstartups #VC

Personal share - I got to go to Sonoma for the first time this week! Just got back from the inaugural Recast Capital Summit led by co-founders Sara Zulkosky and Courtney Russell McCrea. (Thank you Aurelia Flores VIPC | Virginia Innovation Partnership Corporation for making this possible.) Met thoughtful #LPs looking for fresh strategies, and enjoyed time with the emerging generation of alpha-generators, like my Kauffman Fellows Class 23 friends Noramay Cadena, Jenny Fielding, Gale Wilkinson, and Jason Torres--and Recast cohort friends Shalanda Armstrong and Lister Delgado. While catching up with VC friends is inspiring, and having off-the-record conversations is helpful in the futurescape of #VC reality, the one thing I want to celebrate here is 🌹Sara. 🌹 Sara Zulkosky and I met in the Kauffman Fellows program. We were in the same class. I was learning to raise my first institutional fund--and she was with Greenspring just before they were snapped up by StepStone Group. She listened so deeply and advised so gently . . . I will never forget her passion for the alpha only available in emerging managers--and her empathy for the path of breaking into venture. When I cried, basically she cried too. Her wise words were ones I held on to tightly as I went through that first raise. It seems like yesterday. But just a few years later--today--I'm making investments out of my ✨ ⭐ 2nd⭐ ✨institutional fund at Valor VC. And Sara founded a platform with Courtney for top emerging managers and the LPs who seek them to change the game, not just the score. It's working. As a fundpreneur, each day can be a bit of a climb, but some days, you look back on the mountain range you've scaled and the view is breathtaking. That's the vibe I'm going into the weekend with. There's a whole continental divide of experience informing Recast Capital's approach to apha. Worth a follow if you invest in fund managers!

Prime Coalition has long taken a different tack to climate finance compared to its for-profit brethren. It makes the usual venture-style investments in startups through Azolla Ventures and also helps philanthropists direct their money to climate-related projects that it deems high impact. Trellis Climate follows the latter model with a focus on middle stages, where capital has grown scarce. #climatetech #climateVC #climatefinance

Interesting report from PitchBook on first quarter Digital Health VC activity. - $1.1 billion in funding. Key late-stage deals were led by Transcarent ($126M) and Rightway ($108.8M). - The top investment categories were general & primary care ($213.4M) and health benefits navigation ($140.7M). Challenges & Trends: Valuations: Less than 20% of startups reported a priced round in the last 18 months, with an increase in extension/bridge rounds. Digital Therapeutics: Facing significant challenges due to elusive reimbursement and cautious investors. Better Therapeutics is winding down operations, and Akili is being taken private for $34M, a sharp decline from its peak valuation of nearly $450M. Telehealth: Setbacks include the shutdown of Optum's virtual care and Walmart's telehealth services. The pandemic saw over $15B in VC funding since 2020, but some platforms struggled with unsustainable business models and strategic missteps (e.g., Teladoc's costly Livongo acquisition and Amwell's delisting from Nasdaq). Looking Ahead: While digital therapeutics and telehealth face hurdles, there's potential in: Platforms integrating various treatments for conditions like diabetes, metabolic health, and mental health. Specialty telemedicine, B2B platforms, and hybrid-care models, which offer a promising investment outlook. Despite current challenges, strategic investments and a focus on sustainable models can drive the next wave of innovation in digital health. As a former digital health founder, I encourage founders in this space to keep going...there is light at the end of the tunnel! The SomosVC 2023 Annual Report is out! Key findings of the report include: 👉 79% of venture funds over $100 in AUM have no Latino/a investment professionals at all. 👉 Latino/a's represent only 1.6% of all investment professionals at funds over $100M in AUM 💪 Latino/a led firms are more likely to invest in diverse founders - 48% of portfolio company founders identify as underrepresented people of color. 💪 Latino/a-led firms in the SomosVC community have played a pivotal role in job creation, with investments leading to an estimated 51,612 new jobs.
