Yet one critical and powerful component of health equity is often going unnoticed by innovators: civic engagement. When communities have access to participation and enfranchisement, they can influence the structures and conditions that shape their health. And we know inequities in political enfranchisement and inequities in health are interrelated. As such, civic engagement is a social determinant of health equity. A new survey from the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC) and The George Washington University's Geiger Gibson Program in Community Health found that nearly 95% of community health centers (CHCs) have reported patient disenrollment from Medicaid, with an estimated 23% of those patients being disenrolled.    CHCs report that disenrollment has affected patients across all ages, including those with significant health needs, with:    ▶ Two-thirds of those disenrolled (63%) also experienced significant disruptions in care.     ▶ Nearly Half (49%) reported that patients lost access to managed care specialty, hospital, or other care needed outside the health center.     ▶ Half reported that patients had missed their scheduled appointments or discontinued or postponed ongoing treatment.    The survey found that if these coverage loss estimates remain consistent as unwinding continues into 2024, CHCs can expect that more than 3.5 million patients will experience coverage disruptions.     https://lnkd.in/g-dtUTur I #Medicaid #CommunityHealthCenters #HealthEquity #AffordableCareAct

Insights into Homeless Healthcare Service Experiences: A Comprehensive Scoping Review A scoping review examined the healthcare service experiences of individuals experiencing homelessness and identified crucial domains to improve healthcare for this population, such as accessibility, timeliness, and person-centered care. However, the study highlighted a gap in patient feedback mechanisms regarding safety, equity, and holistic care. The review emphasized the need for prioritizing accessibility and timely care, incorporating values of dignity and compassion, and revising patient experience surveys to include safety and equity considerations. The study suggested using the Primary Care Quality-Homeless questionnaire but called for better focus on safety and efficiency in future surveys. Overall, this review lays the foundation for a more inclusive and equitable healthcare system for the homeless. #ICYMI RTI International came out with new research on Wednesday uncovering the disparities surrounding insurance reimbursement for mental and behavioral #healthcare. Their findings showed that those seeking mental and behavioral health services are ten times more likely to go out-of-network than for medical services, creating a significant cost burden. BrainFutures' own Jazz Glastra said, "The latest research from RTI International highlights a troubling reality: far too many Americans struggle to access affordable treatment for #mentalhealth and #substanceusedisorders. This study serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for systemic reforms to make healthcare truly inclusive and accessible." They bridge the gap between communities and healthcare, tackling complex health issues head-on. Our coalition was established from the need to recognize and support this remarkable workforce who uplifts their communities in times of need. CHWs: Making Impact Beyond Healthcare CHWs are more than healthcare advocates. They provide education, support, and advocacy that changes lives. Their efforts lead to healthier pregnancies, improved disease management, and heightened health awareness within communities. Bridging the Recognition Gap: United We Stand Despite their impactful contributions, CHWs often go unrecognized and lack equitable compensation. Many programs for CHWs struggle due to insufficient funding. Our coalition stands united to empower CHWs by offering tools, skills, and a platform to amplify their essential roles. "Session Spotlight: Communicating Effectively About Health in a Time of Polarization Everyone has a role to play in public health communications. With this in mind, the de Beaumont Foundation and CommunicateHealth led research to gauge the plain language messages that can drive support and understanding of public health. Not surprisingly, many respondents had difficulty explaining what public health is and what public health workers do. The top line: People are more likely to trust the information they can easily understand. Consider whether people can feel, believe, see, and say your message. Accountable Communities for Health (ACHs) are formal, community-based partnerships that bring together public organizations such as local health departments, schools, local government, and law enforcement, with private organizations such as hospitals, health clinics, health plans, and community-based organizations to transform community health systems in pursuit of improved population health and well-being. A recent study from PHI’s Population Health Innovation Lab published in Health Services Research advances understanding of how ACHs advance equity. While current literature argues that multisector health initiatives are integral for advancing health equity, there is a lack of research on how these initiatives advance equity in practice.
