“Franz Kafka once stated, “Start with what is right rather than what is acceptable.” This quote reminds me of Ron Cohen, whom I first met following his delivery of a keynote address at the 2012 FDA/CMS Summit in Washington, D.C. When I approached I was holding a copy of the most recent issue of Life Science Leader magazine. He smiled and said as I was handing it to him, “Is that the issue that will be on my desk when I get back to my office.” I had wanted to introduce myself in hopes of possibly setting up an interview for a future feature article, which we did do. But upon learning that he was a loyal reader of Life Science Leader, we quickly began discussing how he might be able to help us by serving as a member of our editorial advisory board. And help us he has. Ron has been a routine contributor to our Ask The Board monthly column, where readers submit a question seeking a 160 word response. He was one of the first executives to submit an article for publication consideration in a newly added column — The CEO Corner. When we were putting together the 2015 and 2016 December Outlook issues, I asked if Ron might be able to help. In the first year he not only participated in the cover feature as a contributing thought leader, but he helped us to connect to three other CEOs for the article. Two of these three executives, based on Ron’s endorsement, also decided to become members of our editorial advisory board. During the first quarter of 2016, Life Science Leader was interested in putting together an in-person roundtable discussion to tackle the industry challenge surrounding drug pricing. Again, Ron Cohen helped us to fill the panel with relevant thought leaders. In fact, it was Ron Cohen who served as the inspiration for our creation of the True Life Science Leader Award, and he was the inaugural recipient. What impresses me most about Ron is his constant willingness to help and to “pay it forward.” One would certainly not fault Ron if he ever utilized being an overly busy CEO of a publically traded company, or that he was highly involved in serving as chairman of BIO as reasons for why he couldn’t currently deliver on his other commitments. And though he would be highly justified if ever having to take such an approach, his high degree of integrity prevents him from doing so. Ron seems to have limitless energy and high attention to detail, and I am thankful to not only call Ron an industry colleague, but a true friend. ”
