Wonderful session today at #ISTE24 with Elevate Education and Ken Shelton all about Equitable and Inclusive Ed Tech Policies! The question was: what experiences do we want students to have during learning? The answers; Engaging, transformative, meaningful, positive!

Fostering democracy? Not exactly the mission I had in mind getting into higher ed tech. But when I joined The Chronicle of Higher Education's webinar on First-Year Student Success last week, I was amazed to see so many attendees asking about strategies for getting out the vote this fall with first-year students. Since November is less than 5 months away, here are 5 ideas that anyone can use to get out the vote with Mongoose's Cadence (or whichever messaging tool you have): 1. 🎂 DOB < 11/6/06 (Now) - Remind them they can vote this year with a link to details, whether or not they're enrolled with you yet! 2. Absentee Info Poll❓(Sep) - Find students to follow up with information on requesting absentee ballots from home with a quick "Yes/No" Smart Message 3. ^Send the Nos an ⚡️auto-reply with more details on getting registered to vote/voting locally! 4. 🏅Challenge Stats (Nov) - Send out a blast text the morning of Election Day to let everyone where to go to get their "I voted" pin to help set a new campus record. 5. It's Not Too Late! (Nov) - ⏰ Schedule a text to go out on election day in the late afternoon reminding them that polls are still open! 6. BONUS - Stuck on the message? 🪄Ask your AI Assistant to add some ✨ splash to make it stick out to your students. Reading Together Truly Makes a Difference! Families and teachers, did you know companies like Dollar General support education, especially reading? Personally, my fondest memories growing up were of my parents reading to me. Reading together as a family every night is a simple but powerful way to boost your child's learning. Anecdotally, I have noticed students who read less often struggle to participate fully in classes that require reading. This in turn leaves them behind the rest of their classmates, in short- lack of full engagement does not help with a student’s overall success. Jenn Wells, EdD's dissertation focused on organizational resistance against Chief Diversity Officers (CDOs) in Higher Ed in the U.S. Her qualitative study of 10 CDOs from small liberal arts colleges provided useful insights that apply to the Higher Ed landscape and beyond. Here are the top 10 takeaways from Chapter Four: Findings 1. Having a clear strategic diversity plan and equity action plan, developed with input from various campus stakeholders, provides important guidance for the CDO's work. 2. Strong leadership and active support from the college president is crucial for the CDO's ability to drive institutional change related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). 3. Promoting a culture of inclusive excellence through frameworks like the Inclusive Excellence Model or alternative models facilitates institutional change efforts led by the CDO. 4. The CDO's reporting line, title, and membership on the president's senior leadership team impact their authority, access, and ability to influence decision-making across the institution. 5. Inadequate staffing and resources (human, financial, and physical space) severely limit the CDO's capacity to implement DEI initiatives and drive institutional change effectively. 6. Resistance from campus partners, particularly related to changing policies and procedures perceived as perpetuating inequality or oppression, is a significant challenge faced by CDOs. 7. Campus partners often lack the necessary knowledge and skills (factual, conceptual, and procedural) related to DEI, placing an additional burden on the CDO as the subject matter expert. 8. Recognition of the value and importance of the CDO's role by campus partners is essential for effective collaboration and institutional change efforts. 9. External events (e.g., racial justice movements) can prompt colleges to renew or develop diversity strategic plans and increase the perceived value of the CDO's work. 10. Student activism and demands can serve as catalysts for institutional change related to DEI, with students acting as information producers and beneficiaries of such changes.
