There are certain types of phrases that can trigger an instructional designer. Learning styles, using “understand” in learning objectives, cognitive overload, last minute stakeholder changes, and more are enough to drive the best instructional designer crazy. Over the years, I’ve had to channel these grievances into more productive ways with sharing best practices. But even now, there are still some things that pop up where I shake my head and pray for divine intervention. By the end of this page, you will know X, Y, and Z." Get to the point. Support the point as much as necessary. Creatively repeat the point to avoid redundancy.

📣 Calling all Instructional Designers 📣 Do you use these accessible technologies in your work? Many of these technologies are used cohesively and interchangeably. Here's a bit more information: Screen readers: Are you tabbing through your documents and eLearning to assess if they are being read properly? Alt text: Descriptive captions for images, giving them a voice for screen readers. Closed captions: The on-screen subtitles for videos, a must-have for deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers. Keyboard navigation: No mouse? No problem! Navigate websites and apps smoothly using just your keyboard. Voice control: Speak your commands! This feature allows hands-free interaction with devices and applications. Color contrast: Highlighting text and images with clear contrast against the background ensures readability for everyone. Font size and styles: Clear, readable fonts in appropriate sizes make information clear and legible. Don't forget these bonus considerations! Reading Order: Using those accessibility checkers to confirm information is read by screen readers in a clear and logical order. Seizure safeguards: Flashing lights or animations can be avoided to protect users susceptible to seizures. Do you use any of these accessibility enhancing technologies? We’ve used JobSIDE as a beta tester and this feature using AI to extract skills from job descriptions is really cool. It could be that many IDs either don't know any better or their hands are tied. I have worked with many, many SMEs who believe ID only assemble what they are told..ie they dictate every aspect of the course. IDs are just "secretaries " for the SME. IDs are ordered to follow instructions if they want to stay employed . IDs may not know the particular content they are working with, but they are masters of presentation, they know how to keep learners engaged and they know how to assess learning has taken place. They know how to parse out material and allow different learning levels to excel. One of the biggest obstacles is getting SMEs to understand that we actually know more about presenting their material then they do. I call it "stay in your lane" As an SME you tell me the technical aspects of the material and I will tell you the best way to present it. You stay in your lane and I will stay in mine.

I see it all the time on here -- people saying that the instructional design field is too crowded, making it impossible to land a job. But is that actually true? 👇 Here's my two cents... Yes, there's definitely been a surge of new instructional designers in recent years, especially those transitioning from teaching (which I support!), but the reality is that while things are certainly more competitive than they used to be, the field isn't oversaturated with skilled, qualified IDs. A quick search on any job portal shows there's basically an endless selection of open positions. The demand for skilled instructional designers isn't just steady, it's on the rise. Don't be discouraged by the crowd. Yes, the space is competitive, but it's also filled with abundant opportunities. The key challenge lies not in the number of jobs but in the quality of applicants. Remember how I said earlier that there's not an overabundance of "skilled, qualified IDs"? Those are the keywords here. Many aspiring instructional designers are rushed through low-quality bootcamps that don't really equip them with the essential skills they need to excel in real-world projects. Here's a tip: differentiate yourself. Invest in solid training, understand the foundational principles of instructional design, and continuously update your skills. Being a top performer who can deliver impactful learning experiences will make you indispensable. 🚀 Rive has the potential to lift interactions in eLearning to a new level, but where do you start with learning how to use it? For those of you who don’t know, Rive is a design and animation tool for creating interactive assets. Let's see whats next: 🎯 1. Get Rive. Don’t worry; the first three animations are on the house. You can find it easily with a Google search. 🎓 2. Time to learn I taught myself to a certain point with the Rive 101 video playlist on their YouTube channel. (Full disclosure: I had some animation experience with After Effects, so some concepts were a bit easier for me to take in. Most beginners should be able to work through it). This gave me a baseline of skills, but I wanted to dive deeper and felt a structured course would benefit me, which is where Motion Design School comes in. Ive been trying out the first lesson of their Rive course today (for free, no less! Just create an account, I'll pop the link in the comments), and Ive learned loads more already. Check out the video attached to this post. 🎨 3. Get your creations into your eLearning There’s a few ways to do that, but Ive been using Kwantic.co to build courses with my Rive animations (check out my other posts to see one in action!) You can just drop your Rive files straight in there as an interaction, no coding is needed to make them work! (Kwantic also has 3 free projects and some cool AI tools, so give it a go!)
