One of the ideas that I applied in this project was to define hangers as an "union" for ducts. In this way, if you needed to move a duct, whether horizontal or vertical direction , (for avoiding clashes or something else). Catenary or Funicular? For those involved in masonry arch roofing systems, do you use the word catenary or funicular? I prefer catenary, from the Latin 'catena' (chain). Funicular is from the Latin 'funis' (rope or cable). I think of the masonry voussoirs as analogous to the discrete links of a chain, rather than the smooth continuity of a rope or cable. The ASTM ballot for heavy-hard impacts is live! The full title is "Guide for Field Measurement of Impact Sound and Vibration Transmission Through Floor-Ceiling Assemblies and Associated Structures When Using Heavy-Hard Impact Objects." This standard has been in the works for a long time but we finally have a good version balloted thanks to a big push from Matt Golden, Simon Edwards, Ethan Bourdeau, and myself. Many thanks to Simon for stepping in as the chair to push the standard over the finish line, to Ethan for as work as the prior chair, and to Matt for all the testing and research he's done over the years to help develop the standard. Simon is the technical contact for the standard but I'm also happy to answer any questions and discuss any concerns. If you're not already an ASTM member please consider joining. Membership is just $115/year and includes access to all the acoustical standards. There is LOTS of work going on at ASTM right now with major additions to standards (array NRC), totally new standards (impulse response decay rates), and major revisions to common standards (E336 and E1007). Much of the nitty gritty standards work is being done in small working groups that meet virtually, so you can contribute without attending an in-person meeting, though I do recommend attending an in-person meeting to better learn about the ASTM process and to get to know all the folks working hard on our standards.

There's a crucial area in steel construction you can't afford to cut costs in: 𝐝𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠. Sacrificing quality here will only lead to trouble down the line. We had a prospective client today ask about the difference between Insulated composite concrete forms (ICCF) and EPS-based Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF). I can only speak to the differences between the Polycrete pre-cut ICF system and the ICCF offerings. The ICCF blocks have much lower insulating value and are far more labor intensive than a pre-cut Polycrete ICF wall kit. You get all the advantages of concrete block masonry and none of the advantages of Insulated Concrete Form construction. ICCFs have no superiority in relation to flame spread or smoke generation over EPS-based ICFs. The ICCF guys like to disparage the environmental aspects of ICFs made with expanded Polystyrene. The truth is, while EPS will last 500 years in a landfill, we aren't putting it in a landfill; we're putting it in your wall, where it will also last 500 years. Further, while EPS is made from naphtha, an "oil-based" product, we're not burning it as a fossil fuel and adding greenhouse gases to the atmosphere; we're putting it into your wall to insulate your home and reduce the amount of greenhouse gasses burned to heat and cool your home. Polycrete ICFs have a 4mm steel wire mesh embedded inside the EPS panels and a steel wire cross-tie system, so you will not have blowouts, bulging, or floating blocks. Why were the big, vertically-integrated, public PNW forest products companies so defenseless when takeover artists like Sir James Goldsmith- backed by innovative, ‘financial engineers’ tapping new sources of capital- attacked and either devoured them or sent them scurrying for new legal defenses in the 80’s? In the business world two mechanisms drive industry evolution: competition and cultivation. The effects of competition are obvious- just as in the natural world, when the competitive environment changes (usually slowly) the companies best adapted to the new environment are the ones that survive. Harvard’s Michael Porter pointed this out and provided simple competitive strategy guidelines in the 80’s. Companies are led by managers with unusual powers of foresight who can anticipate and prepare their organizations for their future environmental changes. They can ‘cultivate’ their organizations. The end of financially-over mature fee timber in the PNW in the late 80’s was predictable and it was bound to be very disruptive to the vertically-integrated companies. As the time approached, log prices predictably soared creating very inviting opportunities for new arbitrageurs. Company takeover artists backed by new sources of capital are a very special challenge to incumbents. Like bacteria and other parasites in the natural world, they can propagate, replicate and react to a company’s defenses extremely rapidly. Far too quickly for top-down industry leaders, with similar backgrounds, managing entrenched business processes best adapted to more slowly-evolving environments. It’s far easier to attack and ‘part out’ a company than build a new one.
