When global competition endangered its business knitting socks in large batches
for retail chains, Vermont’s Cabot Hosiery Mills took a big chance on a bold idea.
It would devote its small-town factory to producing the world’s most comfortable,
most durable socks—and would back each pair with a lifetime guarantee.
Darn Tough socks became a hit. As sales and production capacity soared, the
company’s workforce grew by 50%—yet its information technology lagged far
behind. In 2013, Darn Tough asked NPI to design and implement new security,
network and connectivity infrastructure that could keep growing with a
company that was becoming an international brand.
    SETTING THE STAGE
NPI designed and installed a new, responsive, Flexible networked system, with
capable servers and wireless connectivity to smoothly handle orders, sync with
production, ease communication, and meet the company’s expanding needs.
NPI guided system development and managed the infrastructure—servers,
wiring, switches, a secure firewall, automatic cloud-based backup, monitored
battery backups and uninterruptible power supply.
    COMANAGEMENT: A RECIPE FOR SUCCESS
NPI continued to work closely with Darn Tough as the sockmaker kept on growing.
NPI provided security awareness training, rapid response to security incidents,
Firewall support, application fine-tuning, assistance with Voice-Operated Internet
Protocol, Microsoft 365 email migration, spam filtering, and advice on consolidating
NAS devices and workstation-based services into what—by now—had become
    an industrial-grade infrastructure.
As Darn Tough’s own IT operation grew into a 13-person department, NPI
gradually transitioned from active system management to a consultation role.
Today, the relationship between Darn Tough and NPI is close, well-tested... and
    highly successful.
