Magid is right about the reality that newsrooms are seeing shrinking resources. While Generative AI is not meant to lead to smaller newsrooms, it would be naive to think that isn’t going to happen. Newsroom leaders need to set standards now versus waiting to see what happens. It’s crucial to strike a balance and ensure AI complements rather than replaces the human touch in journalism.

When the American Journalism Project launched five years ago, our mandate was to create the conditions for community-led nonprofit news organizations to sustainably provide the journalism our democracy requires. Today, I’m pleased to share our 2024 Impact Report, a look at the progress we’ve made since our inception. In the five years since our launch, we’ve raised $175 million from national and local philanthropy, and built a portfolio of 44 nonprofit local news organizations —  diverse in size, scope, reach and leadership. Some highlights from the report: -In the last year alone, our portfolio of 44 grantee organizations generated $86 million in revenue — a 36% increase over their 2022 revenue. -Year over year, the organizations in our portfolio are seeing a 58% median growth. -And this growth is leading to more journalism – last year, our portfolio of grantees employed 568 editorial and newsroom staff – an 18% increase over 2022. Organizations are growing, diversifying their revenue, adding journalists, and strengthening their communities. I’m proud of the progress the portfolio has made, and remain clear-eyed about the future. This report sheds light on how far we’ve come and sets the stage for what’s ahead. The more I dove into the behind-the-scenes process of reporting and producing the stellar investigative series, The 13th Step, the more convinced I became about the importance of this kind of journalism -- whether as a podcast, broadcast features, or online - for the future of public media. It would appear that the “new realities” public radio has been discussing for years have arrived, and they have our full attention. Audiences are down in most places, deficits are mounting and staff are being cut, and the editorial heart of our news coverage is in question. As Programming leaders, the question of the moment is, “what now?” We can “admire the problem,” or we can act. On April 24 at 2p CT, Paragon and Listen Again Tomorrow want to start a conversation - ideas for "what now". What meaningful steps can the programming community take individually and together to respond to this new reality? Ads are different on podcasts - they work better. Jeff Ulster has an excellent summary of the arguments. Commercial TV has allowed a total ensh*ion of the experience as accountants try to figure out just how much they can push us before we leave the medium (the same goes for commercial radio). Pods have had a different ad culture - and if they stay protected, we are in good shape as an industry. But - the forces of darkness are gathering. I have noticed some of my favourite shows (talking about you Scott Galloway) now have 3 minute or more ad blocks. I used to enjoy his reads on shorter ad stacks, but now I skip them. I'm hooked on the show, so likely some algo will tell his people they could even do more, but at some point, it makes me resent the ads I do hear before hitting the skip button, which undermines the special power of podcast ads. Since pods are great at delivering niche audiences, it makes the case for branded content even stronger. You can gather a few thousand fans a day/week who care about your area of subject expertise and, since they are often spending 20-30 minutes per episode with you, create a different kind of relationship. In short - and I know everyone who works in the medium knows this, but it bears repeating - if you want to form a genuine relationship with your customers, pods are effective. https://lnkd.in/gZhM4J8W

Today is #WorldPressFreedomDay, first proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993. The day recognizes a historic connection between the freedom to seek, impart, and receive information, and the public good. It acts as a reminder to governments of the need to respect their commitment to press freedom. In an op-ed published today in The Hill, Raney Aronson, editor-in-chief and executive producer of FRONTLINE PBS notes: “If we don’t have journalists doing their jobs, whether in war zones like Gaza or in countries sliding toward authoritarianism, we don’t have a record of the facts on the ground. That journalistic record is something that can’t be replaced with anything else. Its absence harms us all, allowing disinformation, corruption and other abuses of power to proceed unchecked and benefiting only those people, governments and institutions that have something to hide.” Read the full piece below.
