The New York ecosystem for dual-use technology is small but strong and growing rapidly. Thanks to companies like Decisive Point and @a16z who continue to support the community with networking events for founders, investors, and community members. More and more founders are recognizing the value in partnering with the DOD as a strong way to support the country's national security interests while hopefully decreasing the tax burden on citizens regarding government spend as commercially available technology becomes more available and affordable for government organizations. Arcee.ai is building domain specific models for enterprises & startups who don’t need to present their data in the prose of an 18th century poet. It's W9 / Q2 / 2024 & this week in our MGMT Boston startup series we’ve got Arcee, a Seed stage startup building Small Language Models (SLMs) so companies can deploy their own proprietary models quickly & cheaply without hallucinations or purchasing GPUs. Just to state the obvious, AI is booming! You know this, I know this, we all know this. But Enterprise AI spending is still a minority of overall enterprise software spend so we are really *just* getting started. Arcee was started by Mark McQuade & Brian Benedict who worked together as early employees at Hugging Face and were soon joined by Jacob Solawetz. Brian & Mark talked to a LOT of enterprise & mid market companies working to figure out how to build and use AI internally. Unsurprisingly, there were gaps. Brian, Mark & Jacob set out to give companies a better way to use their data to build proprietary models. Arcee can deploy customer models into production on a client side VPC (virtual private cloud) within a couple weeks. As Arcee rolls out their SaaS offering in the coming months serving startups to F500 companies, all customers will need to do is upload their data, pre-train a model, and merge it - all with button clicking. For Thomson Reuters, they launched an entire model around their Checkpoint product which was deployed 96% cheaper with 23% higher performance than their original model trained with GPT 4 and a “retrieval augmented generation” RAG system. Arcee has only been out in the market since October 2023 and has already surpassed a seven figure ARR run rate for 2024. They’re currently growing 40% q/q! Hiring will increase this summer and their team of 15 will hopefully double into the end of 2024 across most functions - including GTM, Engineering, and Research. Naturally they’ll be looking for people interested in building their career in AI and would love for many of these jobs to be in Boston where Brian Benedict calls home.. They work with small startups and enterprises and will be expanding both the customers and verticals they serve as their SaaS offering is unveiled. AWS and MongoDB are two big partners they work closely with and they most recently won MongoDB’s 2024 AI Partner of the Year award. #NYTechweek Day 2: I stopped by my alma matter’s event hosted by CMU Tech & Entrepreneurship about The AI Investment Landscape. My key takeaways: 🌟 Companies that are just using AI for the sake of doing so are overhyped, and not real (or, will not be real for very long). Successful companies have always thrived by solving real problems. You can integrate AI with your product to help solve that problem in a more efficient or user-friendly way, but just being an "AI" tool doesn't mean anything at all. PREACH Jeremy Toeman, thanks for voicing this one on the panel. I talked about this theme in my podcast episode about the pitfalls of AI startups, and it’s good to hear it reiterated! 🌟 The bar for startups to get from seed to series A has gone up a LOT with the rising interest rates and the need for VCs to be more conservative with their investments. And longtime VC Phil Bronner says one of the ways he evaluates a company now is not just on the startup idea and evidence of #productmarketfit, but #foundermarketfit (in other words, “is this founder the right person to solve this problem?”) 🌟 and lastly- man, #CMU folks are so smart. I loved that feeling of being back on campus in a room full of people who are all lightyears smarter than me. I had forgotten how much I used to learn daily from my exceptionally smart peers. ya'll rock.

There is so much that is so damn impressive about Nominal's execution. The team identified a truly needed product in the world. More than that... They serve their customers. Sometimes Nominal is saving days of work for an engineer detangling the performance of new hardware in an autonomous fixed wing drone. Other times, helping implement a transformational change for engineering orgs, delivering iteration speed from simulation to range to unlock an RFP goal and contract win. They are building dual use -- powering the best of commercial and public sector teams. Whether a government contractor delivering on a $12b contract. A scaled public company, integrating AI into your roadmap on to your existing HW platform. A startup which is willing a first product into existence. Nominal is there for all the dual use hardware builders who live real time, live in physical world time. The real world runs real time. For those who remember my previous post about the gov(dot)br hack, check out the HackNotice data for the dropbox domain. Leaked records on the domain are way above average. 25 is really bad and you should expect an incident like the current one if it gets that high. If you're responsible in any way for an organization, you've got to be keeping an eye on this stuff. When ZeroHack tells you a hack is coming, it's because it is. Normalize seeing around corners and preventing incidents, instead of getting caught flat footed doing damage control.

I'm crowdsourcing a better investor database for Boston area capital because founders and VCs shouldn't have to pay Pitchbook and Crunchbase for a basic directory. A few months ago, I assembled a list of emerging managers in the New England region and was surprised that this hadn't been done before. I've also had founders repeatedly ask me, "Who invests in ____?" and I don't exactly know. I put together an initial list of about 90 firms, angel groups, family offices, and accelerators. While the list isn't perfect, it's a start. If you're a founder, investor, or community member, take a moment to help make this data just 1% better.
