Well....it's happening...I am turning into my parents. Luckily, I can count on the savvy marketing team at Progressive Insurance to bring it to light in a myriad of ways. This includes reflecting my parents behavior (ordering lunch) and my own behavior (complimenting employees at random stores....totally cringe worthy for my teenage sons) so I can see where I have already "evolved" and what amazing behaviors are still ahead for me to adopt. This is not the complete intent of my post though, to simply confess to becoming my parents. Last week I had a great opportunity to listen to some leaders discuss generational overlaps in the workforce and the complexities of not only leading them, but recruiting, retaining, and developing them into future leaders. Talk about a BIG topic. Suffice to say, we did not solve the challenges or crack the code to this somewhat timeless challenge. I could go into depth about all the things that we must consider when trying to appeal to a diverse workforce...but the list is just way too long. So instead, here is what MY experience has yielded. Any success I have had in business has come from dialogue and a level of vulnerability to create space for trust and growth. It's been at this intersection where I learn what they truly value and why. THAT is what really differentiates the generations...its the experiences one generation is exposed to which are unique to that time period. What were the external and internal factors that shaped their belief and value structures - things that drive all facets of their lives, from how they may parent their children to what they value in an employer. It can lead to broad generalizations (which are always dangerous) which is why the dialogue and vulnerability is SO important. My life experiences, social and family background, along with external factors like technology, geo political circumstances, and so many others all shaped who I am and what I value. Don't box me in to one generational stereotype any more than you would as a gender, ethnicity, or socio economic group. Come have a conversation with me about how I came to be me...not just who I am today. The conversations I have engaged with show time and time again that the story behind the person is where we as humans get the most from each other. Challenge for everyone in my network - Go strike up a conversation with a friend and find out what shaped them...what's truly behind that friend. How it immediately deepens that relationship will astound you. PS...If you are like me and turning into your parents...Be curious and learn how they got there first :-)
