Looking back at the past 30 years, I remember myself doing science about 55-60 hours a week, and then helping venture capitalists and biotech start-ups about 70-80 h/week. Usually unsatisfied, sometimes exhausted, but pleased overall. This overexciting workaholism was somehow interrupted last year. I had less work and a lot of mountaineering, - climbed about 5.5 Chomolungma attitudes during the year. It feels like I have reached the stage at which it is a time to start sharing experiences and understanding of the universe. This week, I started to share by publishing an analytic report at SeekigAlpha about TG Therapeutics. This small biotech company has developed a third-to-market anti-CD20 mAb for the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS). Along with the company, this report briefly touches upon current treatments for MS, the competitive landscape of therapeutics, and the uncertainties surrounding the development of new BTK inhibitors. https://lnkd.in/drAFx9vt

The opioid crisis was a sad hallmark of my years working for the Baker Administration. In a time of extreme partisanship at the federal level, this was one area where public policy, civil discourse, and private enterprise seemed aligned and sufficiently motivated to find a solution. What we learned, however, is that dollars and access only go so far in combatting a disease that knows no so specific demographic. Instead, it's apparent that a battery of tools is needed to combat and prevent addiction--ranging from strong safety nets, to novel non-addictive pain therapies, and better technology. Introducing Marigold Health. I’m optimistic about the potential of generative AI to reduce provider burnout and improve provider-patient interactions. However, that optimism is tempered by the data that indicates the technology is not quite ready yet. Bright Ventures is interested in digital health founders who understand the realities of provider-patient interactions, and the role technology can play in strengthening clinical outcomes. With the exception of anything from Griffin Jones 😉, any time a reporter writes an article on fertility clinics there will typically be a spin on it that fertility professionals should be getting ahead of to moderate the message - in this case, about quality control, cryo tank monitoring and preventing rare errors that are still tragic for those patients involved (which by coincidence will be the topic of the next i3 webinar, The Night Watch - https://lnkd.in/e8k2ndq7). Perhaps North American fertility clinics should start reporting to the appropriate organization, even anonymously, these "reproductive never events," their root causes and their CAPA response. That way, all clinics can learn from others' mistakes, as is done in the UK - rather than hearing about these events from lawsuits - which aren't focused on identifying root causes and CAPA, just assigning liability. By doing so, clinics can correctly inform the public (and possible regulators) that, for example, ≪0.1% of embryos and gametes are destroyed by mistake - which by comparison, is MUCH less than the % of embryos that simply fail to develop in vitro!!! Glad to share my mid year Healthcare Venture report, tracking financing trends in the US and Europe, and sharing perspectives around active investors, valuations, step-ups and exits. Hope you find it valuable! A few interesting details: Fifty $100m+ biopharma investments, twenty-nine including new crossover investors. PE/Growth investors return to lead large deals Dx/Tools, especially in Dx Tests. Med device sees more early-stage investment, particularly in neuro, and multiple new deals by well-known VCs. Healthtech saw increased investment, led by workflow deals in provider ops and clinical trials subsectors and mental/behavioral and women’s health companies in alternative care.
