The discussion, moderated by Wade Williams of the Montrose Group, highlighted the dual challenges of decreased labor participation and a regional housing shortage. A pivotal study by the Northern Kentucky Area Development District suggests an urgent need to construct 6,650 housing units within the next five years to meet economic development demands. Notably, there is a significant gap in "workforce housing" for those earning between $15 and $25 per hour. Panelists including Brian Miller of the Building Industry Association, Tara Johnson Noem of the Northern Kentucky Area Development District, and Sharmili Reddy of the Kenton County Planning and Development Services shared insights into the complexities of housing affordability, regulatory barriers, and the necessity of public-private partnerships in addressing these issues. Miller highlighted regulatory challenges and infrastructure costs as major hurdles, while Reddy pointed to the emerging challenge of "CAVEs" - Citizens Against Virtually Everything - replacing the traditional NIMBY opposition to new developments. Our nation's housing crisis continues to worsen: most tenants are rent-burdened, landlords are evicting more tenants, and homelessness is  record-high. Many landlords and institutional investors profit from an unfair housing system that lacks basic tenant protections. That’s why today we’re proud to join the National Low Income Housing Coalition and the Tenant Union Federation to release the National Tenants Bill of Rights.
