Atlantic Council The Atlantic Council asked healthcare experts to weigh in on how #MENA could improve healthcare efficiency. #ML #AI #machinelearning #digitalhealth #IoMT #wearables My response: MENA is a very diverse region; even within a given country or kingdom, there is much heterogeneity with respect to incomes, access, and cultural norms around health. To improve healthcare efficiency, governments will need to increase public health expenditure, diversify financing sources, and implement targeted interventions to address workforce shortages and inequities in access to care. Emphasizing preventive care, wearable and passive IoT technology at the edge, adopting advanced health information systems, deploying machine learning/AI in edge-based computing systems, and enhancing regulatory frameworks are essential.

Prepping to pitch HER Heard for #AI for Impact Demo Day Venture Studio class, led by Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor, Ramesh Raskar, which is the culmination of a semester of work. It will be my last class at MIT prior to graduation. Whenever I skimp too much on sleep, like now, my pitch is less effective. Am trying to balance practicing and conserving energy. Thankfully, as an extrovert, put me in front of a crowd, especially of total strangers, and I am instantly energized. That said, as an empath too, and a creative, I actually spend a lot of time alone. When you absorb the energy of the world around you and hear each need - which is good in an #entrepreneur building per #humancentereddesign by listening to customers - all the more, you need time alone to recharge and quiet to hear yourself think. Also, the speed at which I think and move often is hard to maintain with a team. That said, to execute at scale, you do need that team. Grateful for all the mentors and faculty in this venture studio. Back when I started, my “doctreoreneur” role model, mentor, and “big bro”, Khan Siddiqui, MD had told me that it was a no brainer to come to MIT Sloan School of Management (when others questioned if I were “wasting money” on another degree). He was right. (Sometimes, on other things, I don’t take his advice and I always later realize he was, in fact, right.) This has been so much more than “an education” and am grateful to everyone who has been part of this journey to date and who will be with me going forward.

Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (#ABDM) isn't just a framework by the National Health Authority (NHA), it's a solution dedicated to bridging these #healthcare gaps. They offer a suite of innovative building blocks to empower #patients and #healthcareprofessionals. Encourage states to take ownership of #ABDM implementation. This can be fostered by involving state #healthdepartments in program design and decision-making processes. NHA can showcase successful ABDM implementations and learnings in different states to motivate wider adoption that reinforces the value proposition of ABDM.

Thank you Arik Hill for the shout out and thank you to Shirley Wang and The Wall Street Journal for including our work at Lyssn, as well as my colleague Tim Althoff in her thoughtful piece on the use of and impacts of chatbots in mental health.  (Gift link in comments.) Properly validated and tested AI does indeed have a role in improving both access and quality in mental health, human services, and crisis intervention. And, as the article notes, there are both significant risks and growing opportunities to do both in a way that enhances patient outcomes while supporting clinicians on the front lines. At Lyssn, we use a research-led model of product development to ensure that our platform supports the use of evidence-based practices and minimizes risk, including bias.  Even in high-risk situations like crisis calls and 988, our NIMH-funded work with @protocall is demonstrating the platform’s safety and utility. We've been working on AI and mental health for over 15 years. Now, change is coming more rapidly. We believe that clinically-validated tools, including chatbots, will make a meaningful difference in the lives of people suffering from mental health challenges.

I am concerned that we are watching a slow moving catastrophe due to the desire to decriminalize and reduce controls over Cannabis and THC-containing products (which is good) while paying too little attention to quality and regulations.
