In April, the #EPA approved 4 more regulations; one will particularly affect new #naturalgas power plants and modification projects. It’s important for stakeholders to understand how this rulemaking will impact sector costs, and consequently the industry. We looked at historical data for useful insights into how upcoming #regulations might affect future capacity factors. Perhaps most significantly, for new or modified base load generators that will sell more than 40% of their potential electric output, the rule requires 90% CCS by 2032. 36 out of 160 currently planned generators are #CCTG, which could fall under this baseload category if they are able to stay under the 56% capacity factor.

And we are pleased that client Nel Hydrogen is among those leading the way by producing green hydrogen through the electrolysis of water. The company has been spotlighted by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for being selected for a $41 million investment under the Qualifying Advanced Energy Project Credit (48C) that was expanded with $10 billion in tax credits under the Inflation Reduction Act. "The company has initiated a significant expansion and industrialization of its manufacturing capacity and is preparing for a future site in Plymouth Charter Township, a suburb of Detroit, Michigan,” DoE said on Friday. “When fully developed, the facility will be among the world's largest electrode facilities, where Nel will manufacture its next generation pressurized alkaline and [proton exchange membrane (PEM electrolysis] technologies.” Unlike many of the tax credits under the IRA, the advanced energy project tax credit is allocated on a competitive basis. "And to ensure that money helps smooth the transition in the U.S. to cleaner forms of energy, at least $4 billion of the total must go to communities whose economies were historically dependent on coal,” POLITICO's Kelsey Tamborrino reported. More efficient Emissions detection with Kuva Systems in New Mexico 📢  We are pleased to announce that Kuva Systems has received approval from the New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department (EMNRD) https://www.emnrd.nm.gov/ for its Advanced leak and Repair Monitoring (ALARM) program. Kuva has undertaken a substantial effort with EMNRD to show that the solution, one of only a few approved, can meet these challenging requirements and work as a more efficient monitoring solution.     🌎  Kuva's camera-based solution is currently being used by oil and gas operators across the United States and Canada. The Kuva solution provides operators at complex upstream and midstream oil and gas sites with the ability to visually identify intermittent large emission events, “super emitters,” and analyze their root causes for emissions reduction. By leveraging Kuva’s  technology, operators are able to monitor data associated with environmental regulation compliance, minimize the risk of incurring methane emission fees and monitor methane intensity in connection with ESG commitments. New Mexico EMNRD focus is to highly reduce methane emissions in that state and in 2021 released new rules https://lnkd.in/duBKuccD to reduce unnecessary emissions. Under the ALARM program other technologies are allowed to detect, isolate and guide repair of leaks. The emissions detection is used for carbon accounting in that state. The Kuva Solution is a more efficient solution than the technologies used today reducing the need for handheld OGI follow up upon a leak detection. There is a similar approval at the Whitecap Resources https://lnkd.in/gRiiGbGA facility in Alberta Canada where Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) has granted an alternative fugitive emissions management program (AltFEMP) for the Kuva Systems solution at the facility. Exus Renewables North America has begun the repowering of the 139 MW Twin Ridges Wind Farm in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. The Twin Ridges repowering project involves replacing the nacelles and blades of the existing wind turbines while retaining the towers and foundations. The repowering will result in a 30% increase in energy generation for the project. “As the wind energy industry faces increasingly complex obstacles to growth, including a nearly 3 GW interconnection queue of renewable energy projects trying to connect to the grid, repowering has become a path to help meet clean energy goals,” said Jim Spencer, CEO of Exus Renewables North America. “Thanks to these upgrades, the Twin Ridges project will generate clean, reliable and renewable power – and millions in community investment – to the region for decades to come.” Exus Renewables will invest approximately $200 million in the project, creating 150 union construction jobs. It expects to inject over $7.35 million into the local economy through the procurement of materials and services from local suppliers and anticipates that over the 30-year life of the project, more than $100 million will be invested in the community through tax and landowner payments. Vestas-American Wind Technology, Inc. will supply American-made nacelles, hubs, blades, and tower adaptors for the project. #cleanenergy

The State of New York announced today that three offshore wind projects, totaling 4.032 GW, will no longer continue forward with state offtake agreement negotiations after provisionally winning awards back in October. The projects – Attentive One (1,404 MW), Community Offshore Wind (1,314 MW), and Vineyard Mid-Atlantic / Excelsior Wind (1,314 MW) – developed their procurement proposals based on the availability of an 18 MW turbine from GE Vernova, who cancelled development plans for its next-generation technology. New York has been here before: The state has already proven capable of extraordinary effort to keep its local market and projects on track. After it was clear that projects that signed contracts from 2018 to 2020 could no longer move forward with their offtake commitments, the state created an expedited procurement round that took only four months to award new offtake agreements in a competitive landscape. That allowed the Sunrise Wind (924 MW) and Empire Wind I (810 MW) projects to generally maintain their development timelines. Read more: https://bit.ly/3w6GHOw

The US EPA has finalized changes to the NESHAP for Gasoline Distribution Terminals (Subpart R), NESHAP for area sources (Subpart BBBBBB or 6B), and introduced a new NSPS (Subpart XXa). These changes will impact nearly 9,500 gasoline distribution facilities, affecting storage tanks, loading operation controls, equipment leak detection, performance testing, and compliance reporting. Trihydro reviewed these new requirements, focusing on definition changes, equipment leak detection, storage tank fitting controls, and monitoring for early compliance.
