NIMH just released the 2024 annual update to our Strategic Plan for Research to keep pace with evolving scientific approaches and research priorities! This iteration of the Strategic Plan, originally published in 2020, guides NIMH grantees, potential grant applicants, and staff in the design and implementation of future research. Most notably, the updated Strategic Plan emphasizes NIMH’s commitment to funding research that addresses the needs of individuals from underserved populations, including those with disabilities. What if it’s not just the healthcare system that’s broken, but how we think about mental health and mental health care to begin with? This is something I’ve been thinking a lot about these days, as more people in my network have started calling out the hyper focus on symptom reduction (check out a great article by Jessica Watrous, Ph.D. on this in Behavioral Health Tech) or how we can leverage digital tools to promote healthy habits (Julie Miller, PhD recently made an insightful post about this). Throughout my time in digital health, the focus has been on the people who have elevated levels of psychological distress - and no doubt those individuals are important. They need mental health support, and providing it can help to reduce the economic burden associated with depression and anxiety. But what about all the other folks who by all intents and purposes are “well”? Why do we ignore this large part of the population as though they can’t also benefit from mental health care. Mental health care takes work. We’d never tell people who had a “normal” BMI that they’re all set, they can stop exercising and watching what they eat - yet, that’s essentially how we talk to people about mental health. No problems with your mental health? Great! Move along. And at the same time - we tout the benefits of therapy for everyone. The result is that we’re encouraging lots of folks to seek therapy as their form of mental health care who don’t actually need it — and that makes it harder for those who do need it, to get it. This, of course, preempts analysis. There is no impetus for problem-solving if a problem is not identified. We can’t begin to analyze why an intervention is not working if we don’t realize that it is not working. In the episode, Steve Ward , Kayla Perry, M.S., BCBA, LBA, and Dr. Merrill Winston take a deep dive into the concepts of assent, trauma-informed care, and compassion; moreover, they illuminate current challenges within the field of behavior analysis as they relate to the exceedingly broad use of terms like these that lack nuance and seemingly promote rule-governance. You’ve probably heard of lots of different therapy modalities… Like CBT, EMDR, ABCDEFG…I’m kidding on the last one. 😂 There’s a common misconception that they’re the ONLY things that matter when it comes to therapy working for you. But here’s the thing: Research shows all of these methods are equally effective. These modalities are only as effective as the psychologist who wields them. So instead of asking WHICH method they use, here’s a more powerful question to ask potential psychologists, “How much experience do you have working with issues like mine?” Experience is going to matter more than the technique 10 times out of 10.
