April wellness continues this week! During our third week of intentional refocus on ourselves, we are going to learn about the science behind emotions. CX Supervisor Jose will lead a 25 minute seminar focused on learning the science of emotions. This includes science backed tips to help move the emotion through the body. To feel can be a very foreign and more uncomfortable than anything, yet holding feelings can negatively impact our body and its ability to regulate. Self-awareness and regulation are the stepping stones to RISING above and working through, with courage, into a place of balance. Follow along for additional insider tips as the week unfolds! Get To Know The Parents Of Your Teenage Applicant In the early 80's, during my time as a Wendy’s GM in Hopkinsville, KY, I was taught by the Operating Partner, Dick Barrett, to call parents of high school applicants before hiring them. He said this would immediately get parents on my side. I tried this approach for the first time a week later. This became a regular habit. During the interview I would tell the teen that I planned to call his/her parent(s) and asked if they would have any objections. I also asked if his/her parents knew that they were applying, and what they thought of them working during high school. Asking these questions allowed me to see and gauge the applicant’s reaction. The conversation with these parents went something like this. Me: “Hello, Mrs. Smith, my name is Bill Sparks. Your daughter, Katie has applied for a job with Wendy’s. I just interviewed her, and I am interested in hiring Katie. Do you have any objections to Katie working?” Mrs. Smith: “No, that is just fine with us.” Me: “Well that’s great. I will then plan to call Katie and tell her today. Mrs. Smith, please feel free to call me anytime should issues arise such as Katie needing to work less in order to study for a big test, get caught up in school, or needs some personal time. We want to work with you and her in every way so Katie does well in school.” This type of conversation accomplished several objectives. It did get the parents on my side. I built an instant report with them. For example, parents were less likely to call off for their teen unless the employee was truly sick. Parents told other parents. More teens began applying. It sent a message that the teen’s education, not Wendy’s, was the #1 priority. I had a better chance of keeping this teen long term--even through college years. Parents communicated with me more often on matters such as upcoming family vacation dates, school issues, etc. This call gave me a window into their home life. In this low unemployment environment this tactic still works. You could even take it a step further than I did by inviting the parent(s) and teen to have lunch or dinner at the restaurant during their first week. Imagine what an impact this would make on the family and for only a few dollars’ worth of food. My bet is no other restaurant concept in your town(s) practice this relationship building exercise. This is one step that could make you the employer of choice. Be FAMOUS for getting to know parents.
