Weak scheduling modules of ERP systems for job shops and poor job shop scheduling knowledge of ERP consultants: To the best of my knowledge, almost all ERP systems used by job shops have weak modules for scheduling complex production in job shops. If we can find how many job shops use an ERP system and how many among them use the scheduling module of it, the discovery could be very insulting to promoters of the module. I would attribute most of users' disappointment to a "fundamental weakness" in the underlying scheduling paradigm. I also have some unflattering comments for ERP consultants who promote and implement scheduling modules of ERP systems for job shops. Over two decades, I noticed that a majority (not all) of ERP consultants have poor knowledge of job shop scheduling. Of course, there are a few exceptions like the veteran ERP consultant Andy Pratico. Most ERP consultants might got their job shop scheduling knowledge mostly from the nonsensical MRP scheduling logic and/or the weak scheduling modules of ERP systems for job shops. There are no educational opportunities for them to formally learn production scheduling in complex job shops. Yesterday I presented a live web demo of our 20-year-old, commercial, job shop scheduling software to an ERP consulting company that implements a fairly known and respectable ERP system. First I explained most of the input data and showed schedule output in graphical and tabular forms in terms of individual job shop schedules and resource schedules. Later I invited them to ask me any tough questions about the strength and versatility of the scheduling software for complex job shops. They immediately and hastily reached a conclusion that the scheduling module of the ERP system has the same functionality as mine and therefore, there is no need to consider our third party software as an add-on to the ERP system. I was disappointed that they did not pose any tough questions for probing the scheduling strengths and weakness of my software. I seriously doubt they have such questions which are very relevant to complex job shop production. If they demonstrated their scheduling module to me, I would have probably torn it into pieces with respect to job shop scheduling. I felt it after seeing a few YouTube videos of their module later. In summary, I do not believe that most #erp consultants are competent enough to evaluate the real strength of a #scheduling software for complex job shops. #mrp #jobshops #hmlv #mto #productionscheduling #manufacturing

*** So You Think You Can't Run Your Business Without Your Modifications? *** Many SAP modifications can be avoided by following best practices and leveraging the extensive features and functionalities of the SAP ERP system. Here's why modifications can often be unnecessary: - Comprehensive Standard Functionality: SAP S/4HANA offers a wide range of standard functionalities designed to cater to various industries and business processes. By thoroughly exploring and understanding these capabilities, organizations can often find solutions to meet their requirements without resorting to modifications. - Configuration and Customization Options: SAP provides extensive configuration and customization options that allow organizations to tailor the system to their specific needs. Proper configuration and customization enable businesses to adapt the system without modifying the underlying code, ensuring better maintainability and easier system upgrades. - Industry Best Practices: SAP applications are built on industry best practices and standards. By aligning business processes with these best practices, organizations can often avoid the need for modifications and leverage the system's standard functionalities to achieve efficient and effective operations. - Enhancement Frameworks and User Exits: SAP ERP systems offer enhancement frameworks and user exits that allow organizations to enhance or extend the functionality of the standard system without modifying the core code. These frameworks enable the addition of custom logic or integration with external systems while preserving the upgradability and supportability of the SAP ERP system. - Continuous Improvement and Innovation: SAP regularly releases updates, patches, and new functionalities for their ERP systems, especially in cloud-based S/4HANA versions. By staying up-to-date with these releases and leveraging the latest features, organizations can continually improve their processes and avoid the need for extensive modifications. - Partner Solutions and Add-Ons: Many third-party solutions or add-ons developed by SAP partners address specific requirements. These solutions integrate seamlessly with the SAP ERP system, providing additional functionality without the need for modifications. While modifications may sometimes be necessary to meet highly specific or unique requirements, they should be approached with caution. Modifications can introduce complexity, increase implementation and maintenance costs, and make system upgrades more challenging. Organizations should carefully evaluate the necessity and long-term implications of modifications, considering alternative options within the SAP ERP system before proceeding with customization. #sap

🌟 Comprehensive Data Migration Demo: Stock Balances 🌟 Welcome to another video in the data migration playlist! Today, I'll walk you through a comprehensive demo on migrating stock balances in SAP S/4HANA. We'll start by reviewing the necessary configuration steps, followed by checking each material's costing method and existing values in the material master data. Next, we'll use the migration cockpit to add the migration object, download, and fill the migration template. We'll migrate materials with both matching and differing values to the standard cost to observe the financial impact, including price differences. Finally, we'll complete the migration and examine the accounting entries in SAP S/4HANA. Now, let's start by checking the materials we have in our system. To do this, I will switch to SAP GUI and use the transaction MM-60. This is the material list report and it can show all the materials that exist in any plant. My plant is AG-01, and then I will execute. Here are the different materials available in my plant, and I'm going to use these: 1976, 1977, 1978, and 1979. These are the four materials I'm going to use in the demo today. I'll filter on this selection: two raw materials and two finished goods. The raw materials are maintained with a moving average cost and the finished products are maintained with a standard cost. Here we can see the material code, the plant, the material description, and then we can see the unit of measure and the price control. "V" is moving average and "S" is standard cost. 🎥 Watch the full video "Data Migration Demo: Stock Balances" on my YouTube channel: Abdullah Galal SAP. Some interesting facts: Evaluating Between a SAP System Conversion or a SAP New Implementation: 📄 🖋 Surveys indicate that the proportion of customers adopting a system conversion versus a new implementation is 50/50. ✅ Compatibility Packs Compatibility packs allow customers a path to adapt their existing business processes to new business processes contained as part of SAP S/4HANA in a non-disruptive manner. Customers are permitted for a period to use classic ERP functionalities. As a result, new business processes can be adopted on an incremental basis. ✅ Lift and Shift SAP strongly recommends that customers do not simply "lift and shift" their custom code to a new implementation-based system. Customers still need to undergo the same removal and adaptation process, as well as performance optimization. Using this approach can lead to higher project migration costs than what is necessary. #s4hana #fiori

Can you all relate to this ? In most cases these software customizations delay the value delivery and render the product less reliable. In most cases the client project team presents them as a make or break requirement. What has been your experience in dealing with these customizations ?
