With Aoraki, Aotearoa's tallest mountain, featured in my logo design, I'm reminded daily of its symbolism: ambition, hard work, and dedication. It's important to remember that this little business of mine was once just a dream that honestly seemed crazy at the time! Through determination and perseverance, I turned my dream into a concrete goal, and with each step, I've climbed toward its peak. My recent exposure into UI/UX through the Africa Agility Foundation platform has caused me, Ayo Ilupeju to come to the realization that understanding a User’s need, behavior and attitude coupled with the mindset to create new product design or improve an existing product is what tech guys actually call User Research. And it's strictly by collecting data and analyzing them. Which is pretty cool to me. So, what makes a good user research? A good research should have a clear research objective; should include well-defined research protocols; should use appropriate sample methods—Qualitative & Quantitative research methods. As a UI/UX designer your data collation should be unbiased and an extensive data analysis should be carried out. As a UI/UX designer, performing a User Research helps me to understand the problem I'm trying to solve, it tells me what context the user will want to use the product and ultimately what the user really needs even when they might not know it. So, why is this so important? As a UI/ UX designer, performing a User Research helps me to save time and money; helps me to be innovative when it comes to designing a better product or to improve products or services that people will want to use. ANOTHER DESIGN CHALLENGE WITH UX Foundry Day Two: Creating and Refining the Design System On the second day of our 7-days design challenge with UX Foundry , my partner Oluwasegun Awodeyi and I focused on creating and refining a new design system for the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) website. Our goal was to develop a cohesive, user-friendly design that addresses the weaknesses identified on day one, while maintaining the original color scheme to preserve the Central Bank of Nigeria brand identity. Key Elements of the New Design System: 1. Typography: 📍Font Selection: Chose modern, easy-to-read fonts that enhance readability and professionalism. 📍Font Scaling: Defined a clear hierarchy with distinct font sizes for headings, subheadings, and body text, ensuring legibility across all devices. 2. Color 📍Brand Consistency: Maintained the original color scheme to align with the CBN's established brand identitprovide versatility and depth, enhancing visual interest while ensuring consistency. 3. Layout and Structure: 📍Consistent Grid System: Implemented a grid system to ensure alignment and balance across all pages. 4. User Interface (UI) Elements: 📍Button Design: Designed buttons to be more prominent and easily clickable, ensuring they stand out and provide clear calls to action. Used consistent styles for all buttons to enhance usability. 📍Spacing Style: Defined a consistent spacing style to create a more open and inviting layout, ensuring adequate padding and margins around all elements for a balanced look. By creating and refining this new design system, we aimed to create a user-friendly, visually appealing website that meets the needs of the Central Bank of Nigeria diverse audience. ANOTHER DESIGN CHALLENGE WITH UX Foundry 💃💃💃 Day 7: Completing the Landing Page and Additional Pages Finally, the soup is ready! On the seventh and final day of our UX Foundry design challenge, Oluwasegun Awodeyi and I have completed the redesign of the Central Bank of Nigeria landing page, alongside with two other crucial pages: "Contact Us" and "Freedom of Information." This journey has been filled with extensive research, numerous adjustments, and valuable learnings. A Journey of Learning and Growth Throughout this process, we've encountered various challenges and opportunities for growth. Each step involved thorough research, careful planning, and constant refinement. We've made the designs more visually appealing, removing unnecessary information to create a cleaner, more user-friendly interface. The Power of Collaboration Collaboration has been at the heart of our success. Working closely with Oluwasegun Awodeyi has highlighted the importance of sharing ideas and leveraging each other's strengths. Together, we've balanced creativity and practicality to produce a well-rounded final product. Final Touches and Reflections Completing the landing page and the additional "Contact Us" and "Freedom of Information" pages has been an incredibly rewarding experience. These pages now offer a seamless, intuitive user experience, with a visually cohesive design that aligns with the Central Bank of Nigeria brand. I taught young children how to write HTML code from scratch. Yes! That was one of the most challenging two-week jobs for me. It was during the long third-term holiday, and Deola Adeyemi planned an innovative program for kids interested in learning the basics of certain tech skills and other artistic skills. When I was told that I would be teaching the coding class, it seemed impossible—not because I don’t know the basics of coding, but because teaching kids to code was never the plan. The other facilitators cheered me on as I took up the challenge. In my class, the average kid was 11 years old, and a few of them were older, both girls and boys. I started with them gradually, explaining how websites work in a way they could understand, using examples of objects they can see around them. We began with HTML, and I remembered that every time we finished a subtopic, ensuring they fully understood it, I was always proud… By the time we moved into Basic CSS, my kids were already doing very well. This really changed my view towards the way children learn. Some of the lessons I learned that can aid the teaching process for kids in tech are: 🟠 Be familiar with them. 🟠 Understand how each of them learns (their areas of strength and weaknesses). 🟠 Acknowledge their progress. Let them know that you appreciate every sign of improvement. 🟠 Include everyone; don’t let any child feel like their learning pace is slower than others, as it can affect them. 🟠 Be kind to them beyond the class; it really helps their learning process. Children can actually learn anything if you are open to them, willing to put in the extra work, and can think like them as well. This is one of the best experiences I have had. Dear writer, How do we draw the line between creativity and marketing? I got an email from a fintech company yesterday, and the subject of the mail was, "Joy, you will misbehave this week." As a typical Nigerian, my first non-verbal response was, "God forbid😒. I will not misbehave. " I am sure most of us got that email as well, so there is no need to mention the brand🤐. (Let's not drag them online😜) The trick to having a good open rate on your email newsletter is to have a subject line that is catchy and tempting to open, right? But what happens after they open the email? Can your insensitive creativity make them engage with your brand? Was I tempted to open the email? Well, yeah😏! Did I open it immediately? No way! The subject line was a turn-off for me😐. Will I engage with the brand amidst my numerous options? Absolutely NO. I don't misbehave🤭 So, when writing for your brand, pleeeeeaaase note the following: 1) Understand your audience and their peculiarities. 2) Choose your words carefully. Don't let your creativity tempt you into sounding insensitive. There are several ways to say the same thing. Try other options😏. 3) Decide on the feeling you want your audience to have after reading your message. Do you want them happy, emotional, angry, sad, anxious? Craft your message to suit this or use Ai tools like ChatGPT to sort this. 4) Keep your eyes on the goal. You want sales, right? Sell! Also, feel free to test your write-up on people who know nothing about your brand. How do they feel after reading from you? Will you offend thousands of your audience, or will you inspire them to engage with your brand? Thank you for reading. I hope this was interesting enough😊. He said something that really stuck with me:   "𝘐𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘰𝘰 𝘴𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘵, 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘬 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘶𝘱, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘰𝘰 𝘣𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳, 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘰𝘶𝘵."   I've been thinking about this, and it makes a lot of sense, especially for entrepreneurs and business owners.   As a business owner, you need to consider how you run your business. If you are too sweet, people will take advantage of you, and you might end up at a loss. On the other hand, if you are too bitter, people will stop doing business with you.   This also applies to an employer. If you are too sweet, employees might take advantage of you. If you are too bitter, your best employees might leave for other opportunities.   At the start of this new month, take some time to reassess your operations.
