Mediocre CMOs are discounting the technology because they had a mediocre demo in Q2 2023. The technology continues to evolve. The use cases continue to improve. The best will adopt it and drive ROI. I'm truly in awe of the new ChatGPT-4o. On top of its voice and vision capabilities, image generation with text overlays has become more usable now. One of the challenges with all the generative AI-powered image and art tools has always been getting text to work with it. I’ve always found it challenging on Midjourney and ChatGPT-4. The output was mostly gibberish - the text gets garbled, and it comes with a lot of artifacts. I finally discovered Ideogram and used it for generating a cover image for a newsletter last week. And boy, was I blown away! Their algorithm nails text perfectly. The prompt was something akin to : An art-deco style billboard with the copy 'The Heart Manifesto'. You can see examples of it on pages 1-3 below. I strongly believed that Ideogram was well positioned to lead the AI art race. That was two weeks ago. In comes GPT-4o. Now I’m able to generate nearly flawless text overlays on ChatGPT. It takes a few attempts to get it right, but this model closes the gap with what Ideogram offered (see examples 4-6). That said, I do love Ideogram's magic prompt and remixing capabilities. As a marketer, these are great tools for me. I can now send an idea to a designer or an art director without really having to go through a long discovery process; and can nearly accurately convey what I want in a creative asset. The local AI movement continues to build momentum. Don't blink. (I'm serious!) Real flags are being planted, especially around #ResponsibleAI. Groups like #Cincy AI for Humans continue to pack the University of Cincinnati’s UC Digital Futures building, proving that the progress is not only real and meaningful but wonderfully authentic. Startups like my own BrandRank.AI are popping up. Another group, CAIC (Cincy AI Catalyst, which I co-founded with Carl Fraik, is pushing responsible AI, AI in education, startup creation, and putting the Midwest on the national map. On top of that yet another force, the Enterprise Technology Association (led by Summer Crenshaw) is spearheading with CAIC and other groups are pushing Cincy AI Week June 11-13 (yes right around the corner). I’ve launched a new creative agency Feelr Media and I love old radio ads for heavy metal concerts (if you want to go down a rabbit hole of weirdness. Type into the YouTube search bar: heavy metal concert radio ads and enjoy the voiceovers/copywriting). We want to make an album of old 80s hair metal with a virtual band. With the ability to upload anything to Spotify we feel why not this trend? Maybe we can crash the charts? Who said an agency can’t be a virtual heavy metal band with a top selling album and tour? Our industry needs to think outside the box again instead of working like we’re some kind of assembly line for bad digital ads that nobody clicks on or social ideas that just hop on “trends.” Ideas ours. One of the most compelling applications for #generativeai is in creating images from simple text descriptions. With the latest version of Photoshop and version 3 of their Firefly image foundation model, Adobe has brought those capabilities within the realm of a powerful image editing tool. Plus, they've maintained their strong legacy on content authenticity, avoiding copyright infringement and even offering legal indemnification for people who use their GenAI tools. I describe the new capabilities and their implications in my latest column for USA TODAY.

Re-framing the role of AI as a collaborator and suspending the temptation to seek a perfect, complete result is the way forward. Have done a lot of reading and playing with new AI tools over the last few weeks, I’m now beginning to re-think how I originally perceived AI. AI is NOT like a computer which we’ve become accustomed to always being right... in fact if anything it’s the very opposite.. Instead, it’s more like a co-pilot that helps automate and accelerate our ability to fulfil tasks that constitute a journey towards a better idea, strategy or concept. That journey will be a little messy but like anything good things take time and effort.. I think it’s better to perceive AI as a series of algorithms and language models designed to identify patterns and trends in data and knowledge and far quicker than any human. First however, we must stop expecting AI to provide the perfect answer and instead treat it like a colleague that we use as a sounding board to riff with and from; the results can be transformative, even in this nascent state. Humans are fallible and so is AI but we must first accept that reality to embrace the power.. Now is the time for us all to open our minds and be curious about the potential of AI. Like any test and learn exercise, getting to a great place will take many experiments and iterations. Those of us who are less technical should observe and learn from engineers who apply structure and agile thinking to solving problems, suspending the need for immediate “problem solving” gratification.. As AI navigators, I believe we must increase our patience and tolerance for “play” and “iterative improvement” and be willing and more skilled in dialoguing with AI like we would with a real person. This is not about firing a single command and sitting back…as with anything in the workplace, there’s those that take the lazy path (want to cheat and get that LinkedIn post written for them) and those few that are able to see the larger potential in investing time and energy in the longer journey of growth. Don’t be mediocre, be the best. Being the best takes discipline and consistency, just like going to the gym. To be truly fit, we must also exercise a range of muscles, not just the obvious, comfortable ones.. What do you think? What are your own observations on AI?
