What is your approach to redesigning an existing website?
It's important to gather feedback from your users. You should be doing this continuously, but if not, you will have to implement methods for measuring successful and failed user flows, site performance, and common pain points. You should also strongly consider launching a direct survey to random site visitors soliciting more in-depth information and opinions. On the back end, if your site depends on API calls or system resources, you should be monitoring latencies, payload sizes, and success/failure metrics, and developing stories to address any issues accordingly during your redesign. A website isn't only its front end.

You're struggling to create an algorithm for a recommendation engine. What are some ways to improve it?
Consider defining metrics and monitors that allow you to evaluate if your feature is having an unintended affect, like actually frustrating your users into leaving your site at a higher rate than the control group. These signals could then be dynamically used as a feedback in model training and even in severe cases notify you directly so you can intervene. This feedback can then help determine future development paths.

You're struggling to create an algorithm for a recommendation engine. What are some ways to improve it?
Consider the scalability of your service. When you first launch, issues such as the size of your data inputs may seem trivial, but over time if your service becomes used on a global scale every byte saved can make for meaningful cost and performance savings. Do you really need a particular parameter or data type? How is performance affected if you omit or add certain variables, and can you simplify and condense your data to be as parsimonious with system resources as possible?

You're struggling to create an algorithm for a recommendation engine. What are some ways to improve it?
It's important to understand the provenance and quality of the data you have. Not all data is valid or meaningful, depending on its origin, collection method, and there may even be legal or ethical concerns surrounding its use depending on your field. Once you've considered that, you'll need to identify patterns in your dataset which you can use for your recommendation engine. I imagine in particular you'd be interested in finding correlations between seemingly unrelated factors and a customer behavior, but you still need to be aware of, and control for, previously identified issues in your data, such as if your sample isn't representative of your broader customer base and skews to a particular demographic.

We have a poster accepted to the meeting of the Western Psychological Association (WPA) in Portland, OR, in April 2014, and have a manuscript in preparation.
