Here is a great article about PE investing and how to win in the future. We are hearing a lot of negativity about PE these days, however, there are plenty of terrific PE shops and lots of winners. This article suggests PE is a growing class of buyers. Stay tuned.

The stunning part of FSOC’s report on nonbank mortgage companies isn’t what it says about NBMCs; it’s what it says about itself.  My memo this week points to the fact that FSOC’s most substantive changes call for legislation it knows it won’t get along with a bailout liquidity fund it should have thought better of.  More federal backstops means more moral hazard which means more systemic risk which I suppose means more FSOC bailouts unless the Council is forced to do what Congress demanded and restore market discipline.

Of Marathons and Inflation Fighting. Heartbreak Hill at mile 20 is tough--but the finish line is still 6+ miles away for the Boston Marathon. Today's CPI, graph below, highlights that we have passed the Heartbreak Hill of inflation at 6.6% but, following the guidance of the Three Stooges "slowly I turn" there is still some distance to go. Inflation remains sticky (inflation, as for so many other economic series, has a strong autocorrelation character). Too early to declare victory. Two percent may be the goal, but three percent appears to be just fine for the financial markets. Will the Fed and financial markets settle on three percent? The race is not yet finished. I’m so excited to begin this journey. This marks a significant inflection point in my career and my nearly 20 years raising capital for industry leading GPs, the majority of which (effectively, post-GFC) in all manner of alternatives. The independent model has been embraced to an increasingly greater degree by both managers and allocators and it feels like an opportune time to be doing this. If there’s one descriptor I would use to describe my approach all these years it’s: investor/LP-first, something I hope my LP relationships would agree with. The most effective way I’ve found to simultaneously put GP and LP interests first — to increase the size of the pie so that 1+1 = > 2 — is to always be doggedly client-centric, as LPs always know when a manager’s claim to be LP-focused above all else is true policy driving all behavior of the manager vs. a sales pitch. When the former is clear, managers are inevitably rewarded for it. These are the managers/GPs I will seek to partner with as we, together, have a primary driving force of genuinely being a solutions provider to our mutual, shared investors. My guiding principle will be to partner with managers who share this view and who provide truly differentiated alpha and to identify LPs/allocators who will uniquely benefit from a given offering/solution rather than pushing product that doesn’t solve for a given investor’s unique goals/needs/sensitivities. I believe this is a model that will be successful — for all stakeholders — as it’s worked so well where I’ve been able to align these attributes in past roles. I look forward to speaking with my LP and GP relationships, as well as with those I haven’t yet had the pleasure to get to know, in the coming days and weeks. I plan to get out on the road soon as well for some overdue face to face meetings and social interactions.
