This is an interesting article because EHR companies, like Epic and Oracle's Cerner, have made siloing data a major part of their business model. Overall, I like EPIC’s ability to review records from other EPIC shops. It also has a nod to interoperability with its “Care Everywhere“ feature. However, this is often a disorganized and outdated collection of information. Using it requires a ninja level of both tech expertise and medical knowledge possessed mainly by younger physicians and chief residents. I am a fan (and advisor) of companies like Zus Health focused on user-friendly, comprehensive, and up-to-date interoperable health care data tools.

This is a great article from Modern Healthcare. At Sanford Health, I am so glad cybersecurity is an organizational wide accountability and isn’t taken for granted. Here are a few key takeaways from the article. Cybersecurity needs to be a top priority and a shared goal across all areas of your health system operations. You can’t buy your way into a risk free environment. Healthcare is an industry designed around connectivity and interoperability. Third and fourth party risk needs to be given proper attention. Having a Rapid Response Plan, not only for your security operations center, but also for your enterprise leadership team, is invaluable when the tough stuff happens.

Workforce shortages are a big issue in healthcare. There's a growing need for digital solutions that can streamline workflows and create efficiencies. At the recent HIMSS23 conference, major companies like Microsoft, Epic, 3M, and Amazon Web Services announced new integrations and collaborations to support healthcare staff. But with so much innovation happening, it can be overwhelming for health systems to direct their focus and understand their specific needs. One solution that's gaining traction is virtual nursing, which offers much-needed relief in acute-care areas. HCA Healthcare's Sherri Hess shared that the program has helped with admissions, discharge teaching, and hourly rounding. It also attracted retired or academic nurses who want to provide care. Automation is another key area for healthcare organizations to consider, as it can help return hours back to patient care. Providence, for example, has built a predictive scheduling tool that automates a laborious manual process and frees up time for caregivers. Also, there's a growing interest in the practical applications of machine learning in healthcare. Phoenix Children's Hospital's David Higginson shared that his organization has built ML models that help diagnose malnutrition, predict no-shows, and identify potential donors. However, he emphasized the importance of finding the right problems to solve and showing concrete benefits for the organization. In 2016, the Cures Act introduced information blocking and set of rules and exceptions around what information blocking is - and isn't. It's a KEY part of partnerships with EHRs and other healthcare technology. One of the issues, is it's very gray. One of those reasons is because even though you can file complaints, there's currently no plethora of case law to go look at for precedent like there is for anti-kickback. (though aks can be gray too). Information blocking is so gray that in the government's own FAQs around what consitutes information blocking their answer to whether a situation is IB is it requires a "case-by-case assessment of the circumstances." That's great and fair - things do need to be determined based on the facts at hand but it can make it difficult to see how they apply in practical scenarios.
