We love to make plans, but life makes its own plans more than we realize. A fact I was humbly reminded of this Father’s Day weekend. Nowhere in my plans did I have “remove my gallbladder” but life didn’t check with me first before making that decision. On the bright side, a few days in the hospital gave me time to think; here were a few of my post-op takeaways: 1. Lean on Your Team. Always, but especially during unexpected and difficult times. My work team has been amazing, from colleagues in my department to peers I haven’t seen in awhile. Their support over the last few days means a lot. Thank you! But my team doesn’t stop there, I’m blessed with the best team at home. Erin Goldman doesn’t get nearly the credit she deserves, but this woman and my three kids are the team I lean on the most, I’m so grateful for them. 2. Trust your instincts. My body told me something was wrong for almost a week, and I *thought* I could look past it. Sometimes instincts require less thinking and more believing. This prompted me to recently revisit lots of Daniel Kahneman thoughts from “Thinking Fast and Slow”. 3. Perspective is powerful. My first thought after awakening from surgery was wanting to see my family, followed by “man this hurts.” Yet, before they even wheeled me back to my room, I was thinking about emails. Problems waiting to be fixed. Why did my mind go there? Imagine my surprise when no (new) problems emerged while in surgery, and if they did, my team was all over them (see point 1). Grateful indeed. So make your plans, just also be ready for life to make other ones. Oh, and be sure to thank your nurses, doctors, and hospital staff, they are doing remarkable (life-saving) work under difficult circumstances. 🙏

The Orange County Leadership Summit was a great success today. The summit was not a conference, a seminar, or a training. It was an opportunity to break out into groups and look at our industries in ways we may not have thought about previously. Starbucks’ Brand Transgression – The Philadelphia Incident On April 12, 2018, a barista at a Philadelphia Starbucks (SB) approached two black customers, Donte Robinson & Rashon Nelson, but they were in no rush to order or leave. The outlet called the cops and the two were arrested and released after a few hours with no charges. But during those hours and for a few days later, SB came under scrutiny, with accusations of racial profiling. This transgression violated expectations from a company which prides itself for its social sensitivity. The story unraveled rapidly thereafter. -April 13: SB offered a somewhat indifferent tweet which did little to stem the rage that was frothing over. -April 14: CEO Kevin Johnson made a succession of apologies. -April 15: He flew to Philly to meet with the two men, regulators, and community leaders and delivered a video apology stating: “I own this. This is a management issue, and I am accountable.” -April 16: Johnson posted another apology on Facebook as well as publicly apologized on ABC’s Good Morning America. -SB included Robinson & Nelson in a thorough audit of all aspects of its operations to address implicit bias. -On May 29, in a gesture laden with intent, it closed its 8000+ US stores for racial bias training for all its associates. Cost: $16.7 million. -SB & the City of Philadelphia reached separate agreements with Nelson and Robinson. -Both were offered free online college tuition to complete their bachelor's degrees at Arizona State University. -In June, SB launched a program for its partners "The Third Place Development Series" to encourage “empathy, community, courage, and inclusion.” -SB’s Executive Chairman Schultz (among other senior leaders) chimed in, showing top leadership visibility in acknowledging the transgression. Brand transgressions are routine, global, and even brands like SB are not immune to them. Professor Shalini Sarin Jain and I have co-authored a book launching next month that focuses on this thorny but important issue titled MANAGING BRAND TRANSGRESSIONS: 8 PRINCIPLES TO TRANSFORM YOUR BRAND. The book was written over 3 years based on an analysis of numerous case studies (including SB) spanning 50 years of business. The key takeaway is a set of 8 crucial principles that companies should follow when faced with brand transgressions. In a unique pitch, the book exhorts managers to use these 8 principles as a roadmap to convert brand transgressions into opportunities for brand transformation instead of mere exercises in crisis management.   To quote from the book: “(Starbucks’) case stands out for how a global brand that redefined the innocuous act of coffee drinking globally, faced a crisis of racial discrimination towards its customers, the speed with which the leadership took control of the situation, and the brand’s transformation with a mix of contrition, empathy, proactiveness, and willingness to change the company’s very policies for the larger good of its customers.”
