I should have not left for HBS when I did. I had the privilege of working at AOL Ventures during the late 90s, alongside incredible individuals like Chris Bolster, Ron Peele, Stacy Tucker, Neil Sequeira and Ted Maidenberg. It was a remarkable era at the cusp of the Internet and mobile devices, where I spearheaded over 7 deals and was part of a team with a stellar corporate mission. However, after pursuing further education at HBS, re-entering the VC realm proved challenging. Despite a brief stint at a buyout firm masquerading as VC and operational experience, I faced age-related barriers even with a small exit under my belt. The competition with younger, more agile entrepreneurs was fierce. I was too old to be an Associate and not sexy enough to be a Partner. Lesson learned: Never sacrifice a dream job for a brand name or school. Despite the setbacks, I still harbor the same dream. With my experience in angel investing and successful exits, and solid operational experience, I believe I can bring immense value to the right team. The opioid crisis was a sad hallmark of my years working for the Baker Administration. In a time of extreme partisanship at the federal level, this was one area where public policy, civil discourse, and private enterprise seemed aligned and sufficiently motivated to find a solution. What we learned, however, is that dollars and access only go so far in combatting a disease that knows no so specific demographic. Instead, it's apparent that a battery of tools is needed to combat and prevent addiction--ranging from strong safety nets, to novel non-addictive pain therapies, and better technology. Introducing Marigold Health. Shrenik Jain, Ravi Shah, Tracey Cohen, MD, FASAM and team have built a proprietary NLP-based platform that--most significantly--improves the lives of those suffering from SUD/SMI. One customer we spoke with noted, "We needed a unique treatment intervention that had supportive research, fit into a CMS established model with a recognized service code, and that would provide positive clinical outcomes in an efficacious and fiscally responsible manner”. Medical imaging in minimally invasive and robotic surgery is constantly advancing, and there are several exciting technologies I believe will make a big difference in the market - for the benefit of surgeons, and of course, patients and their families. This article by the WSJ is critically important for public health officials and HealthTech entrepreneurs to internalize. We need multiple solutions for patients to move towards post GLP-1 usage. These solutions need to be easy to implement, non-disruptive to daily life and focused on caloric restriction , lifestyle change and muscle gain. Too many startups are still focused on GLP-1 prescription and delivery. Not enough people focused on the next stage of the weight management journey. As the Journal states, the benefits of the GLP-1 craze are only going to be successful long term if the transition off of them is successful. Interesting piece from Marc Andreessen on how startups are not getting the regulatory support they need to sustain America's technological leadership. "Regulatory agencies have been green lit to use brute force investigations, prosecutions, intimidation, and threats to hobble new industries, such as Blockchain. Regulatory agencies are being green lit in real time to do the same to Artificial Intelligence." While many investors themselves (both in the US and Europe) are worried how AI will change our lives, our jobs and social interactions, the top VC opinion leader thinks regulation is already too restrictive. #techstartups #techleadership #strategicgrowth
