Workforce shortages are a big issue in healthcare. There's a growing need for digital solutions that can streamline workflows and create efficiencies. At the recent HIMSS23 conference, major companies like Microsoft, Epic, 3M, and Amazon Web Services announced new integrations and collaborations to support healthcare staff. But with so much innovation happening, it can be overwhelming for health systems to direct their focus and understand their specific needs. One solution that's gaining traction is virtual nursing, which offers much-needed relief in acute-care areas. HCA Healthcare's Sherri Hess shared that the program has helped with admissions, discharge teaching, and hourly rounding. It also attracted retired or academic nurses who want to provide care. Automation is another key area for healthcare organizations to consider, as it can help return hours back to patient care. Providence, for example, has built a predictive scheduling tool that automates a laborious manual process and frees up time for caregivers. Also, there's a growing interest in the practical applications of machine learning in healthcare. Phoenix Children's Hospital's David Higginson shared that his organization has built ML models that help diagnose malnutrition, predict no-shows, and identify potential donors. However, he emphasized the importance of finding the right problems to solve and showing concrete benefits for the organization. Price Transparency – Hype, Opportunity and Barriers: One of the long standing problems within US healthcare has been non-clarity of cost of care and wide disparity of the same across various geographies within US. Two key regulatory requirements were introduced by CMS in 2019 (#HospitalPriceTransparency for providers) and 2020 (#TransparencyInCoverage for payers) to enable cost of care transparency amongst members and healthcare providers. #TransparencyInCoverage for payers was directed primarily at commercial line of business with vision to include all line of businesses at some point. The broader goal was bringing price consistency across the nation through price transparency. These rulings were historic and moved all associated industry stakeholders as they presented significant opportunity as well as threat as captured in #1SF single slide analysis. Fast forward 2024: ·       Most stakeholders complied with quote and quote regulatory requirements ·       Significant opportunities persist in uncovering transparency data and make it optimally useful for streamlining cost-of-care disparities ·       Current #PriceTransaprency data defeats apple-apple comparison owing to significant non-uniformity and non-standardization across payer and provider data such as: o  Insurance product ID and product coverage are not standardized o  Bundle codes and bundle definitions are not standardized o  Procedure code usage for a given condition is not consistent o  High prevalence of custom codes o  Acceptance of supporting procedure codes as unstructured text o  Utilization insights are not present against given procedures ·       A quick gap analysis (depicted in #1SF Schematic) identifies four focus areas of action for all involved stakeholders: Intent, Design, Set-up Cost and Compliance #CMS #TransparencyInCoverage #HospitalPriceTransparency #MemberExpereince #ProviderExpereince 1SF Background- Taking advantage of my industry experience while working with wide variety of healthcare problems, shaped 1-Slider-Fox (#1SF) an initiative to uncover some of the complex business problems and situations prevailing in US healthcare. 1-Slider-Fox distinctly breaks down the problems for common understanding with simple flows and visualizations within “One Slide”. Through #1SF, I look forward to bring series of such business problem explanations pertaining to US payer/payvider in future.
