About
With decades of experience working with business owners, his professional training and certifications, and success as a leader and manager in both private and nonprofit sectors, Pat demonstrates a unique and broad understanding of the personal and business challenges faced by business owners. His experience, knowledge, and training result in a comprehensive approach for business owners’ intent on building sellable business value, exiting their business on their own terms and conditions, and leaving their desired legacy.
Technical knowledge is evidenced by the following professional certifications: Certified Exit Planner (CExP®), Certified Financial Planner (CFP®), and Chartered Advisor of Philanthropy (CAP®).
Pat also excels in the "soft skills" needed for assisting clients with clarifying and establishing their owner-based goals and objectives and managing a team of advisors in designing and implementing a plan. He is also a highly skilled facilitator of strategic planning retreats and meetings.

What are the essential elements of a successful small business succession plan?
Now that you're clear on goals (financial, values-based, legacy) for exit and business continuity, understand the pros and cons of the categories of ownership successors: management team, children, third-party buyer, ESOP. And then seek to align your goals with an ideal successor. Suppose the successor(s) are insiders or children. In that case, more work needs to be done to assess their competence and temperament for ownership and provide coaching, equipping, and training to fill in any gaps. One other issue often overlooked has to do with multiple successors interested in purchasing the business -- the issue is whether they could work well together as co-owners -- there should be work to assess this as well.

How can you sustain change over the long-term?
In their book Execution: The Discipline of Getting Things Done, Larry Bossidy and Ram Charan discuss the importance of "exposing reality" within our business to execute strategy effectively. Suppose we are disciplined and systematically expose internal and external realities about the company, industry, and the marketplace. In that case, we will understand what change is happening and needs to happen. Perhaps we expose the reality that to "sustain change," we need to change employees' skill sets.

How can job descriptions improve your interview process?
If we want to maximize effectiveness in the interview process, we need a clearly defined and disciplined process -- foundational to that process is a clearly defined job description. Attention to detail in our interview process also serves to demonstrate corporate values and set a cultural tone and expectation of corporate excellence from the very start. If we have a pattern of hiring employees sloppy in the details of their roles...it may be due to a sloppy interview process.
