#TruthTuesday The University of California San Francisco’s Benioff Homelessness & Housing Initiative has found new and worrying statistics regarding homelessness and our elderly members of society. Their recent study has found that 48% of all unhoused single adults in California are aged 50 years and older. Of those numbers struggling with homelessness, 41% did not become homeless until after the age of 50. There are many contributing factors to these statistics, ranging from a lack of rent protection to the lack of access to support materials and programs to poor health, increasing medical costs, and many other factors stemming from everyday challenges. In Honor of #Nationalpridemonth the Nevada Division of Child & Family Services are bringing attention to the need of LGBTQIA+ foster homes and allies in Rural Nevada. Here are 3 facts on LGBTQIA Foster Youth provided by the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) 1. LGBTQ+ youth are like any other youth. Everyone has a sexual orientation and gender identity. LGBTQ+ youth go through the same milestones as their cisgender peers, such as attending the first day of school, going on their first date, and earning their first paycheck. Most, if not all, youth in foster care have been affected by trauma and loss due to separation from their families; they require acceptance and understanding. 2. Their LGBTQ+ identity cannot be changed. Medical and psychological experts agree that attempting to change someone's sexual orientation or gender identity does not work and could result in higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. So-called "conversion therapy"—any method intended to change an individual's sexual orientation or gender identity—does not work and can be harmful to a person's health and well-being (SAMHSA, 2015). 3. You do not have to choose between your faith and supporting their LGBTQ+ identity. Many religious groups embrace LGBTQ+ youth, adults, and their families. There are more and more affirming churches and religious groups that are providing affirming spaces to LGBTQ+ youth and their families and DCFS celebrates those religious allies that are often the backbone of support to many Rural communities in our state. San Diego’s senior population is set to increase in the coming years, raising concerns for those who don’t have the support of close family, also known as elder orphans. In the next 10 years, adults over 65 will outnumber children under 18 for the first time in United States history, according to Census Bureau data. San Diego County’s senior population is projected to grow by more than 21% during that time. This is a growing concern for elder orphans. “When you get older, the risk factors for becoming more likely to be isolated or alone, are increased. You’re more likely to lose family and friends and significant others as they pass away. You’re more likely to become more frail and less mobile,” said Ellen Lee, MD, geriatric psychiatrist at UC San Diego Health. "It is challenging for clinicians to identify these individuals, making it difficult to manage the complexities involved in delivering care, especially if they don’t volunteer the information." Over 1,000 organizations across California agree: We must #ProtectFURS Yesterday, through The Children’s Movement of California, over 1,000 organizations signed on and sent a letter to Governor Newsom urging him to keep the Family Urgent Response System in the state budget. The in-person helpline specifically designed to support foster youth and caregivers is currently proposed to be eliminated. This collective show of strength sends the clear message that California should never abandon foster kids to balance its budget. TV Game Shows Are Hot, So California State University Los Angeles Created Classes To Get Students Jobs 🎯🎰 Cal State LA is has created a three-class series to help students get an advantage in a red hot segment of the entertainment industry: Game shows. The first in the three-class series slated for the fall is called, “Get in the game.” “The whole idea is to provide not only a gateway into the industry, but to send people out to be eligible for jobs,” said Harry Friedman, the longtime producer of Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, who helped create the classes. He was among those who gathered Thursday in a Cal State LA auditorium filled with students, professors, and entertainment industry professionals for the announcement. Friedman said the idea for the classes began in a conversation between him and California State University administrators about how to help graduates enter the television industry. Friedman said Cal State LA was the first campus to step forward to create a curriculum. “There'll be internships, there'll be on-the-job training, there'll be field trips, there'll be all these things that will help them, hopefully, step right out of school and into jobs,” said Kristina Hackel, chair of Cal State LA’s department of television, film, and media studies. Professors made the announcement on the opening day of Cal State LA’s annual film festival. Some students who attended the announcement are TV, film, media studies majors and want to get their foot in the door in the entertainment industry. “I'm really looking into music editing for films. I really just enjoy music and how it shapes a picture,” said third year TV, film, and media studies major Isaiah Nieves. But now, after hearing about what goes into producing a game show, he said he wants to take the first class in the fall to find out if he can do that kind of work for game shows. For now, professors expect the first class in the fall to attract about 25 students, but they say they can expand the enrollment if there’s big enough demand. There’s also interest in other parts of the country to take the class online.
