Clair Brings Earned Wage Access To Gusto Clients Earned wage access fintech Clair has partnered with payroll, benefits, and HR management solutions company Gusto. Under the agreement, employees at many of Gusto’s 300,000 supported businesses will be offered access to On-Demand Pay via Gusto Wallet. Gusto is Clair’s first partner to announce participation in the new embedded EWA product. Embedded earned wage access provider Clair and payroll, benefits, and HR management solutions company Gusto are teaming up this week. The partnership will allow Gusto to offer earned wage access (EWA) to their small business clients. Founded in 2019, Clair offers an embeddable EWA tool. Clair’s clients, which include Trinet, 7Shifts, syncHR, use the EWA tool to help their combined 12,000 business customers offer their employees earlier access to their paychecks with no interest. Once employees set up a Clair spending account, they can receive a paycheck advance at any time for hours they’ve already worked. Clair offers end users banking services powered by Pathward, N.A., including a virtual and physical Mastercard debit card, access to fee-free ATMs, and does not charge monthly service fees or require a minimum balance. “Emergency expenses often arise and employees need a secure and convenient way to cover those unexpected costs,” said General Manager and Head of Product at Gusto’s Members business unit Dan Loomis. “Due to these needs, we decided to add an on-demand pay offering to Gusto Wallet and knew it would be crucial to find the right partner to bring it to life in a seamless, compliant way. We evaluated all the major players in the EWA space and Clair stood out as our ideal partner, bringing both the compliance framework and technical capabilities we need to offer wage advances right inside our existing app. We’re proud of this industry-leading collaboration that expands the possibilities of embedded financial wellness benefits.” Under today’s partnership, employees at many of Gusto’s 300,000 supported businesses will be offered access to sign up for On-Demand Pay via Gusto Wallet. The company anticipates the move will help employees increase prosperity by delivering not only earlier access to their pay, but also to financial and work productivity tools. Gusto is Clair’s first partner to announce participation in the new embedded EWA product. Gusto was founded in 2011. A recruiting agency made $82k in their first month of recruiting on Paraform - that's $1M in equivalent annual billing! John Keenan and his brilliant team at Continuity Partners (shoutout Brianda Reyes Castro and Lona H.) are making a placement every week on Paraform at some of the most exciting companies. John was one of the early recruiters at Palantir Technologies, and joined Continuity Partners in 2007 - he claims (and hiring managers on Paraform seem to agree) working with him will be the most fun you can have talking to a recruiter. How was his team so successful? He broke it down for us: “Recruiters make money by doing the same search over and over. Not by placing one-offs. Paraform just announced our seed round today! 🎉 So I'll also share how I joined Paraform a couple months ago. I was approached by a recruiter—on Paraform—about Paraform. Fongyen Lin and I had a great chat on a Friday in January about the company and the role, and I thought it was a great fit, both in terms of it being a talent-related company and it being an early operator role. I had a Zoom chat with John Kim and Jeffrey Li the following Tuesday, then came in for an onsite lunch on Thursday, where John and Jeff were awesome in how transparent they were about the company, its challenges, and the massive opportunity space. And I came away impressed by how mature the product was, as well as the humility about the mistakes that had been made. It took a couple weeks to work out a plan for parental leave, but glad things worked out, because it's been the most exciting and invigorating past 2 months cranking and building with John, Jeff, and Aparimeya Taneja (also hired through Paraform!), helping amazing startups hire and supporting some of the best recruiters in the business. There's so much more to come. If you're a startup hiring, let Paraform help you fill your hardest roles. There is one lesson I learned from my coach Alla Adam: 🌟 The best thing you can do for others is to help them succeed. This completely matches my values and goals. I shared my Playbook, "Validating Riskiest Ideas for Pre-PMF Startups," with many people during the first days and received their initial feedback, which makes me happy. They find my information to be: ✔️ structured ✔️ clear ✔️ applicable This is exactly what I wanted to achieve when I developed it. Inspired by Elena Avramenko's workshop, I decided to add these Playbook steps to Miro and turn them into a dashboard. It’s a tale as old as startup time.  We pivoted! Over the past few months I’ve enthusiastically shared with friends and mentors my experience working with PhenoUI, frontend tools we built to build our mental health app-mindora. I invariably got the question, “Kerry, why aren’t you guys selling that?” My co-founder Dario Segura and I had pivoted before so we wanted to be really certain that focusing on our tools was the right move and that we weren’t just drinking our own kool aid. So, we reached out to developers, spoke to healthcare company technology leaders, and it has become abundantly clear—what we’ve built can empower healthcare tech teams to build apps REALLY FREAKING FAST. I’ve been building in healthcare for almost 15 years from medical devices and biopharma to consumer health. My background is in data and machine learning. Working with healthcare data to build products and models is definitely not for the faint of heart but getting those solutions into end-user hands has, in my experience, been the most difficult part. You can build a model, build an API, and now with GenAI it’s even easier to build incredibly powerful workflows and agents.  But getting it to actually reach the end user is a challenge, particularly in healthcare companies who rarely have the internal frontend capabilities required to build these apps. We know there is untapped technical potential at healthcare companies. One of the projects I’m most proud of in my career was creating a coding apprenticeship for scientists at #Amgen. I saw firsthand how tailoring a technical experience and capabilities to healthcare practitioners could be incredibly empowering for individuals and force multiplying for an organization. Going forward I’ll be sharing more about what we're up to at PhenoML and demos of what healthcare developers can build with our tools, PhenoUI. Two things I’ve seen the best PMs do really well: 1. Creating hype: They get everyone in the organization excited about any initiative and align xfn teams. 2. Open-mindedness: They don’t get too attached to a specific idea. Instead, they take a step back, view things objectively, and obsessively gather feedback from as many people as possible. Kevin Anderson is one such awesome PM who has a genuine curiosity and infectious passion for Experimentation. We just released the best analytics & reporting suite for loyalty programs in eCommerce. Before I explain how & why, let’s zoom out… 2023 was a massive year for Smile.io merchants, and by-far their strongest year yet in terms of loyalty program performance. A PM I adore and respect recently said “building product is easy”. Funny, I never thought of product as an especially easy job. You have no direct authority, you wear ALL the hats, and you’re constantly juggling non-obvious non-linear constraints from several teams across several functions. You have to be the visionary, the cheerleader, the coach, the babysitter, the good cop, the bad cop, and even the therapist. Oh my! But when times are especially confusing and I find myself needing clarity, I, like many PMs, developed a small set of very simple pragmatic day-to-day principles, cultivated from experience and by watching my amazing mentors. 1. Focus on the customer You are there to solve customer problems, and all else is secondary. Talk to customers as much as possible, build intuition around their daily lives. Empathize with them. You’ll understand their problem space in no time. Go and solve these problems deeply and beatifully. 2. Shorten the hypothesis loop Make sure that ideas are rooted in customer need, develop evidence for them, develop metrics. Make sure to build an introspection machine that discards failed hypotheses quickly, don’t let the dogmas stew. Attribute success to action! 3. Eyes on the vision When there’s too much going on, write down the top 3 most important things. Heck, top 1. Make sure it drives towards your vision. Clear your calendar - schedule a half-day block called "Snorkeling" so you know no one will distract you. Go and do that 1 top thing. 4. Rome didn’t burn in one day When things are tough, take a pause and ask yourself - how was it a month ago? six months ago? You'll very quickly realize that you've done a whole lot of good stuff, all kinds of progress has been made, and everything is on a strict upward trajectory. Let's keep going, imagine 6 months from now! Am I perfect? Certainly not! But it's a start :) What are your day-to-day, practical principles to live by?
