Interesting to see that digital health funding is relatively stable. Only a couple of exits. I think we'll see more deals like DarioHealth's acquisition of Twill, since from a sales perspective, the narrower the solution, the more difficult it is to acquire customers. This difficulty has nothing to do with the quality of offerings, but with the data management and administrative complexity on the customer side.

Big news from Karoo Health today. This partnership will accelerate their ability to deliver value based care (VBC) for cardiovascular disease. If you are frustrated with America's healthcare system, VBC will give you reasons to be hopeful. Not only does it drive down costs, but it is better care. Initial data shows 29% of patients using Karoo's model have been diverted from at least one unnecessary ER visit. That's huge savings for our healthcare system and a huge impact on those patients' lives...a true win-win.

Investing in companies that fill needs for health systems is a growth opportunity for both delivery organizations and start ups. Some systems are jumping in on their own, while others are partnering with like minded systems or with established VC firms. While this is a relatively new trend for systems, health plans have been making similar bets for many years. The benefits of becoming a health system portfolio company can be significant. Data, access to beta populations and real world coaching can be extremely beneficial. Start ups get mentoring and systems have to ability to leverage outside resources to solve relevant business problems. I predict a booming business!

Had a blast diving into Amir Dan Rubin's extensive healthcare career on Vital Signs. Amir previously served as the CEO of One Medical and Stanford Health Care, was an EVP at United/Optum and is now the Founding Managing Partner at Healthier Capital. Our conversation spanned payer-provider integrations, lessons learned from leading One Medical, applications of generative AI, and more. Some highlights: ⚡Combining care models We talked a lot about the One Medical/Iora combination. Amir argues that just because two care delivery approaches may occupy the same physical location (e.g., a clinic), that doesn’t mean they necessarily need to conform to the same economic model. For instance, One Medical and Iora were able to combine effectively despite the former being a membership model and the latter being global capitation. Amir emphasizes that much of the overhead resources (e.g., front desk staff, phlebotomy) can be shared across models. ⚡How One Medical uses generative AI to improve efficiency One Medical allows members to message the care team, and then uses NLP to read the message, figure out its content, and triage it to the appropriate team member. Amir is excited about leveraging internal knowledge graphs to get around hallucinations. This approach can point to relevant internal data in helping compose responses, creating more trust and accuracy in the outputs. ⚡Behind the Amazon acquisition One Medical was interested in expanding its direct to consumer offering. However, they recognized that customer acquisition was costly, which is why partnering with Amazon Prime’s existing membership base made sense for them. Amir explains how at their core, both Amazon and One Medical are all about using technology and logistics to create an excellent customer experience. Grail, a company specializing in liquid biopsy for cancer detection, is set to debut on Nasdaq amid significant challenges. CEO Bob Ragusa believes their test, Galleri, will revolutionize cancer screening when integrated into standard care. Grail's journey includes being spun out from Illumina in 2015, a failed acquisition by Illumina in 2020 due to regulatory hurdles, and subsequent re-emergence. Despite annual losses of approximately $500 million, Grail plans to seek full U.S. approval for Galleri by 2026, funded for the near future by Illumina. Interesting take from TechCrunch on AI within healthcare. I think given the pace of acceleration in the space that many of these qualms won't be relevant in a fairly short amount of time. But, interesting to note what some people are thinking about when it comes to AI in healthcare.

Two years ago, I was a guest on The Wellness Paradox Podcast with the amazing, fun and insightful Michael Stack where we discussed the growing need and impact of #exerciseoncology This timeline was just after the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) #exercise during treatment guidelines along with the International #bonemets recommendations. There was so much fresh enthusiasm, engagement and energy that this field had crossed such an important finish line. And I would agree this work was incredibly meaningful and empowering and being on the author team, I saw what we did to get to this space. To date the guidelines have been downloaded almost 64,000 times which tells us how important they are. But what's happened in the last two years? Have we made change? Have we, as cancer care professionals, changed how we communicate this? Have we considered how this impacts ourselves in risk reducing cancer in our own world? Or surviving cancer if we are in that space? As an implementation-focused professional, I was well aware that this finish line was actually really the starting line. And this line is actually simply the base camp of a massive climb that we are all on. While this work feels often fragmented and that we are in fact not even sure of the path, I continue to feel that it is one of the most powerful paths we can be on. There is absolutely indisputable evidence that exercise is something with even a bit of pixie dust for our patients and quite frankly ourselves. I'm obessed with he amazing organ of muscle and all of the powerful things it does. Every day I'm sharing this information because well it's not often sexy or exciting to talk about, it MATTERS to the outcomes of our patients. Take a listen. Feel free to reach out. Scaling Quality Obesity Care. Enara Health is presenting at #ADA24 on Sunday, 6/23, at 12:30 PM. Poster 1074. #ADA24 has been filled with GLP-1 studies, but the the study we are presenting allows us to imagine how we can scale great care across the United States. We chose to submit this specific subset of data on patients with Type II diabetes and Obesity to show that behavioral, lifestyle, and traditional AOMs have a crucial place in the broader strategy to tackle obesity alongside GLP-1s. Only 12% of the AOM group in the pilot used GLP-1s, yet both AOM and non-AOM groups achieved 11% weight loss. This highlights the importance of a multifaceted approach to obesity treatment.
