Medicaid coverage can be life changing, but only if enrollees understand their coverage and are empowered to seek care. Unfortunately, disjointed outreach and awareness building sometimes means many who are covered don’t even realize it. Researchers found that about 1 in 3 people enrolled in Medicaid in 2022 didn’t know that they were covered, an ongoing problem that worsened during the unwinding. This issue highlights the importance of thorough outreach to Medicaid enrollees, and why policymakers must do all they can to reach those who are eligible. If policymakers did away with burdensome and ineffective work requirements, precious staff time and resources could be better spent on essential tasks like notifying people of their coverage status at the right address, or writing clear communications materials in many languages. https://lnkd.in/ewCwWbNc

Publication Alert 📢 📚 It seems all of my research articles are being published this week. It hardly happens but it is what it is. Our work on leading palliative care development is far from over. This new publication used a qualitative exploratory design to explore the institutional drivers of palliative care integration in a military health facility <https://lnkd.in/eQWgBtKU>. Findings 📊 📉 The six themes that describe the institutional driving factors for integrating palliative care services were cognitive restructuring, supportive logistics and infrastructure, staffing, healthcare professional skills, institutional policies and priorities, and utilization of focal persons. It was observed that a paradigm shift in the mindset of healthcare professionals and administrators was a major driver that would determine the integration of palliative care services. A cognitive restructuring will facilitate a more aggressive integration of palliative care services because logistics, staffing, and medication access will be prioritized. This was a very interesting conversation and highlights my fears about the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) and their application to healthcare and the Global South. I believe that AI has a role to play, but it needs to take into account local context and not simply apply data from the West, or approach entire continents monolithically. In defense there are major gaps in healthcare research in the global south, not unexpected. For example access Sub-Sahahran Africa where the average is 1 cardiologist per 10M people, for clinicians immediate needs takes precedence over future research. Unfortunately, without data points AI will confidently provide wrong answers.

In the June issue of Health Affairs, “Reimagining Public Health,” Sophia Simon-Ortiz of Human Impact Partners and her team of coauthors conduct interviews with representatives of community power-building groups and public health non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and see opportunities for partnership and more effective collective action: "With public health under attack, asking public health organizations to be bolder may seem counterintuitive and even dangerous.
